Office Location: Business 810 Address: Course Description This course is designed to help students understand basic accounting bookkeeping, the accounting process, and the design and purpose of financial statements. Course Materials and Resources The required text for ACCT 2010 is: Walther, L. (2015). (Links to an external site.) This is a free online textbook. Course Fee The $15.00 course fee is used to pay for the tutor lab. Tutor Lab A tutor lab is available beginning the second week of class. 2 Course Objectives This course is designed with following learning objectives in mind: Specific Objectives for ACCT 2010 Demonstrate an understanding of key accounting terms and definitions (i.e., asset, liability, equity, balance sheet, income statement, etc.). USU IDEA Objectives 1. Gaining factual knowledge (terminology, classifications, methods, trends) Demonstrate an understanding of how transactions are recorded and affect financial statements Describe, identify, and demonstrate an understanding of the components of financial statements Demonstrate an understanding the basic accounting process Demonstrate an understanding of the differences between accrual income versus cash flow Demonstrate an understanding of basic business calculations such as depreciation and book value Demonstrate an ability to understand how businesses measure financial performance and firm value Help students understand how accountants prepare and use information to represent economic activity and make business decisions 2. Learning fundamental principles, generalizations, and theories 3. Learning to apply course material (to improve thinking, problem solving, and decisions) 4. Developing specific skills, competencies, and points of view needed by professionals in the field most closely related to this course pg. 2

3 Course Format This course consists of two class meetings per week. Regular class meetings will involve a variety of teaching methods including lecture, class work, and discussion of problems. Typical assignments for each class session include: Background reading. Readings should be completed prior to class as noted on the course schedule. Homework. Practice Sets are preparation for quizzes and exams. Practice Sets refer specifically to the Goals Achievement, Fill in the Blanks, and Multiple Choice quizzes that are part of each chapter on the textbook website. Please work through those three self-assessment tools for each chapter as noted on the course schedule. Course Grading Your performance in ACCT 2010 will be evaluated as shown below: Midterm 1: Midterm 2: Final: Quizzes: Assignments: Total: 100 points 100 points 200 points 120 points 30 points 550 points Letter grades for the course are determined based on your course performance consistent with the following scale: A 94 % B- 80 % D+ 67 % A- 90 % C+ 77 % D 64 % B+ 87 % C 74 % D- 60 % B 84 % C- 70 % F < 60 % Midterm and Final Exams. Exams account for approximately 73% of the course points. The content of these exams is from the course text, handouts, lectures, and assignments. The exams will be closed-book with a mix of question formats (e.g., multiple choice, true/false, workout problems, etc.). Quizzes. Quizzes account for approximately 22% of the course points. Quizzes will be based off of the Practice Sets. There will be 14 quizzes, each worth 10 points each. Your quiz grade for the course will be based on your highest 12 quizzes, meaning you can drop 2 quizzes. These quizzes will be completed in-class as indicated on the class schedule. Assignments. The only assignment for this course is the Annual Report Assignment. This assignment will be started in class on September 20 th and then turned in at the start of class on September 22 nd. This assignment is worth 30 points, or 5% of your grade. pg. 3

4 Exam Make-up Exam Policy. It is to your advantage to take all exams at their scheduled times. Only in the case of a well-documented, true emergency should an exam be missed. Please be sure to get your instructor's prior approval. Exams missed without the prior approval of an instructor or without adequate documentation of the reason for missing the exam will result in a recorded grade of zero for the missed exam. Honor Code Violations of the USU Honor Code in this class are taken very seriously. Any form of cheating will result in an automatic failing grade, plus disciplinary measures under the USU student code. No matter how much pressure you feel like you are under, please do not compromise your integrity for something as insignificant (in terms of your entire life) as a grade in this class. Disability Resource Center If a student has a disability that will require some accommodation by the instructor, the student must contact the instructor and document the disability through the Disability Resource Center, preferably during the first week of the course. Any requests for special considerations relating to attendance, pedagogy, examinations, etc. must be discussed with the instructor. pg. 4
