Fall 2007 Mathematics Retake Kurzweil Administration Manual
General Information Background Information Kurzweil Kurzweil 3000 is a reading, writing, and learning software for students with dyslexia, attention deficit disorder, or other learning difficulties, including physical impairments and/or other language learning needs. Kurzweil software contains a wide variety of features, including Text to Speech capabilities. Students To Be Tested It is recommended that a student have experience using Kurzweil before using the program for testing. Instructions Before Testing Administration Schedule The FCAT Fall 2007 Sunshine State Standards Kurzweil Mathematics Retake test must be administered during the official state testing schedule, September 24 September 28, 2007 or October 1 October 5, The test is untimed; however, testing for a single subject must not extend beyond the end of a school day. Near the end of the school day, test administrators must stop testing and collect all test materials. If a student has been working the length of a typical school day on a subject, but has not finished, it is appropriate to stop testing. Proctors A proctor must be provided for each student taking the Kurzweil Mathematics Retake test. The proctor will assist the student by putting the Kurzweil CD in the computer, helping the student to access the test, managing paper documents, and recording the student s answers on the paper test and answer document as needed. Proctors must be informed of the test security laws and rules prohibiting any activities that may threaten the integrity of the test. Every proctor who monitors a test room for any length of time must follow test procedures and sign the FCAT Security Log discussed on page 20 of the Fall 2007 FCAT Reading and Mathematics Test Administration Manual. A copy of the agreement to follow the Kurzweil guidelines is provided on page 13 of this document for the proctor to sign. Fall 2007 Mathematics Retake Kurzweil Administration Manual 1
General Information Student Demographic Information For students tested via Kurzweil, all demographic information on the front of the paper test and answer document must be completed. The preidentification information provided by each district was used to create student labels. A document is preidentified if it has a student label attached to the lower left corner of the student grid sheet. If demographic information is missing from a student label, grid the information in the appropriate place(s) with a No. 2 pencil. See pages 5 11 of the Fall 2007 FCAT Reading and Mathematics Test Administration Manual for more information. Test Administrator and Student Survey After testing has been completed, both the test administrator and student should complete the surveys included with their testing materials. The test administrator should assist the student in completing the student survey. Completed surveys should be returned with scoring materials. Install Kurzweil Software Prior to administering the test, all Kurzweil software must be installed on the computer the student will use during testing. There will be three files on the Kurzweil CD: a PDF version of the practice test (used only for printing), the Kurzweil version of the practice test, and the Kurzweil version of the operational test. The operational test is the secure test to be administered on the day of testing. Here are the file names for the Kurzweil Mathematics Retake test: Practice Test PDF file: FCAT_9 10KurzPT.pdf Practice Test Kurzweil file: Grade 9 10 Practice Test.kes Operational Test Kurzweil file: MathRetake_TestBook_f07.kes Administration Accommodations Kurzweil testing accommodations should reflect the student s regular Kurzweil settings, unless those settings provide non allowable test accommodations. All accommodations allowed during testing will be accessible via the toolbar. If an accommodation is grayed out, it will not be accessible during testing. If a student s accommodation settings are not correct when testing begins, the test administrator may help the student set the correct settings as long as the settings are allowable for statewide assessments. Appendix A of the Fall 2007 FCAT Reading and Mathematics Test Administration Manual provides information concerning permissible test administration accommodations for students with disabilities when using paper based test materials. Where applicable, the same accommodations may be permitted for eligible students taking the test via Kurzweil. The test administrator and the school administrator are responsible for ensuring that arrangements for accommodations have been made prior to the administration dates. 2 Fall 2007 Mathematics Retake Kurzweil Administration Manual
General Information Mathematics Reference Sheets and Calculators The Grades 9 10 FCAT Mathematics Reference Sheet may be used for the Kurzweil Mathematics Retake test. FCAT calculators and FCAT TALKING CALCULATORS may be used for the Kurzweil Mathematics Retake test. If FCAT talking calculators are used, some of the FCAT talking calculators do not have a key for finding the square root of a number. Prior to the beginning of testing, inform all students using talking calculators that they can request the use of a regular FCAT calculator for finding the square root of a number if their FCAT talking calculator does not have the square root key. If the student is unable to press keys, he or she must tell you what keys to press to find the square root of a number. Similarly, some FCAT talking calculators may not have a change sign key (+/ ), which is used to perform operations involving negative numbers. Before testing begins, notify the students using talking calculators that they can request the use of regular FCAT calculators for performing operations involving negative numbers if their talking calculators do not have the change sign key. Keep in mind that you may perform only actions involving negative numbers. In both instances, you may perform only actions requested by the student. 5 Script for Administering the Practice Test Script for Administering the PRACTICE TEST There should be one proctor for every student. If a student is unable to physically grid to answer, proctors should be instructed to grid only the answers indicated by the student. All answers must be gridded on the paper test and answer document, not indicated electronically in the Kurzweil program. Only the paper document will be scored. Provide individual student restroom breaks as needed, and maintain the security of the test during breaks. Students may not discuss the test or exchange information about the test with anyone. Before reading this script: Then, 1. Insert the Kurzweil CD. 2. Open the PDF file and print out the practice test. Close the file after printing. (File name: FCAT_9 10KurzPT.pdf) 3. Open the Kurzweil practice test file. (File name: Grade 9 10 Practice Test.kes) 4. Verify that the student s accommodation settings are correct. 5. Proctors need to review the text on correctly gridding student responses as described in the practice test. 6. Proctors need to be familiar with FCAT calculator functions. We are now going to take the practice test. (Help students follow along in the printed copy of the practice test and in the Kurzweil electronic version.) This practice test contains 8 questions. (This test is untimed for students using Kurzweil.) Some of the questions in this practice test are multiple choice questions. A multiple choice question is followed by several answer choices. Read all the answer choices under each question and decide which answer is correct. For these questions, you will mark your answer or tell me which answer to mark. You may need formulas and conversions to help you solve some of the problems. You may refer to the Grades 9 10 FCAT Mathematics Reference Sheet as often as you like. (Show students the Grades 9 10 FCAT Mathematics Reference Sheet and answer any questions.) To begin the practice test, turn to item 1 in the paper based practice test and answer book and simultaneously start the Kurzweil program. 4 Fall 2007 Mathematics Retake Kurzweil Administration Manual
Script for Administering the Practice Test Before starting the test, When you come to the STOP sign, you have finished the practice test. You may go back and check your work or answer questions you did not complete. (When the student has completed the practice test, collect the student s practice test and answer book and close the Kurzweil program.) Fall 2007 Mathematics Retake Kurzweil Administration Manual 5
Script for Administering the Kurzweil Mathematics Retake Test Script for Administering the KURZWEIL MATHEMATICS RETAKE TEST The third file on the Kurzweil CD is the secure version of the operational test to be administered on the day of testing. The time allowed for this test will depend on the amount of time the student needs according to their IEP (Individual Education Plan). Provide individual student restroom breaks as needed and maintain the security of the test during breaks. The student should not discuss the test or exchange information about the test with anyone. One proctor will be needed for each student. The proctor will make sure that the student has the Fall Mathematics Sunshine State Standards Retake Test and Answer Book. Before reading this script: 1. Verify that student demographic information is correct. 2. Break the seal on secure documents. 3. Verify that the pages are in the proper order and there are no missing or upside down pages. 4. Insert the Kurzweil CD. 5. Open the test file. (File name: MathRetake_TestBook_f07.kes) 6. Verify that the student s accommodation settings are correct. 7. Proctors need to be familiar with FCAT calculator functions. 8. Proctors need to be familiar with Directions for Completing the Response Grid. If a defective test and answer document is found, contact the school coordinator to obtain a replacement. Do not remove the student PreID label from the defective book. Help the student to write his or her name on the front cover of the replacement test and answer document. After the test has ended, all other student information must be gridded by the proctor on the replacement, according to the instructions in the Script for Gridding the Non Preidentified Student Grid Sheet on pages of the Fall 2007 FCAT Reading and Mathematics Test Administration Manual. Set the defective book aside and return it with all other NOT TO BE SCORED materials. Before administering the Kurzweil test to students, proctors will need to review the administration scripts in this manual and the administration scripts in the Fall 2007 FCAT Reading and Mathematics Test Administration Manual. 6 Fall 2007 Mathematics Retake Kurzweil Administration Manual
Script for Administering the Kurzweil Mathematics Retake Test Administering the Kurzweil Mathematics Retake Test The following script should be read when administering the FCAT Fall 2007 Sunshine State Standards Kurzweil Mathematics Retake test. Before starting to administer the test, post the electronic devices sign where it is visible to the students. The perforated form is in Appendix C of the Fall 2007 FCAT Reading and Mathematics Test Administration Manual. You may not have any electronic or recording devices, such as cell phones, pagers, or electronic games, at your desk. If you have electronic devices in your possession that might disturb others, such as watches with alarms, turn them off now. You may not have electronic devices in your pockets, at your desk, or anywhere you can reach them during testing. Possession of any electronic device that reproduces, transmits, calculates, or records will result in your test being invalidated. If necessary, pause to help students turn off electronic devices and return to their seats. At this time, ensure that your own electronic devices are turned off. Turn on the computer and place the Kurzweil CD in the proper drive (if this was not done before testing started). Go to the onscreen test title page and open the operational test file. Distribute FCAT calculators. No other calculators may be used. The only materials on your desk should be your test and answer book and your FCAT calculator. (The proctor will open the test and answer book for the student.) The proctor should print the student s first and last name on the line next to Student Name in the upper right corner of the student grid sheet. On the next line, print the name of the district and the name of the school. The two lines in the upper right corner of the student grid sheet must be completed by each student and/or the proctor, even when a student PreID label is affixed. If school personnel have not gridded or verified the student information prior to testing, read the Script for Gridding the Non Preidentified Student Grid Sheet on pages or the Script for Verifying the Preidentified Student Grid Sheet on pages of the Fall 2007 FCAT Reading and Mathematics Test Administration Manual before reading the remainder of this script. Now you re going to take the Mathematics test. Look at the pencil and grid symbol. (Help students find this symbol on the inside front cover of their test and answer book and onscreen.) This symbol appears next to gridded response questions. The Directions for Completing the Response Grid are as follows: 1. Work the problem and find an answer. 2. Grid your answer or tell me your answer and I will write the answer in the answer boxes at the top of the grid. (Students/ Proctors must fill in the bubbles accurately for the student to receive credit for the answer.) Fall 2007 Mathematics Retake Kurzweil Administration Manual 7
Script for Administering the Kurzweil Mathematics Retake Test The other kind of question you will be asked to answer is a multiple choice question. For multiplechoice questions, choose the best answer then grid your answer or tell me your answer and I will fill in the answer you choose. Turn to the Grades 9 10 FCAT Mathematics Reference Sheet. (Help students find the reference sheet on pages 3 4 of the test and answer book and on their computer screen. The proctor should carefully fold and tear along the dotted line to remove the reference sheet.) The reference sheet contains formulas and conversions you may need to answer the mathematics questions. You may refer to this sheet at any time during the Mathematics test. (Turn to the picture of the FCAT calculator which indicates the function of each key.) Here is a picture of the FCAT calculator. Note that some calculators display the negative sign to the right of the numbers rather than to the left. Let s perform a calculator check. I will key in the subtraction problem 3 7 (three minus seven) for you or you may key it on your own. The calculator will display the answer as 4 or 4. Either is correct. (Proctors need to work with the student to make sure they understand the calculator functions.) You may use the calculator to solve the problem or you can tell me what keys to press to solve a problem, and then I will read you the answer the calculator displays. The bottom half of the page lists Helpful Hints for Taking the FCAT Mathematics SSS Test. Let s take a minute to read through the list of hints. (Proctors should read the hints to the student.) You may refer to this page at any time during the test. (For more information, see the Mathematics Reference Sheets and Calculator section of this manual on page 3.) Pause to allow students time to review the list. Scroll down the computer screen to the first page of the Mathematics test. (Help the student open the paper based test and answer book to the correct page.) Scroll down the computer screen and read silently as I read aloud the directions at the top of the page. (Read directions in the paper based test while the student follows along on the computer.) You may grid the answer or I will mark the answers that you tell me in the test and answer book. (Only mark the bubble for the answer the student indicates. Do not make a mark in any of the other bubbles.) Although the Kurzweil Mathematics Retake test is untimed, you must finish before the end of the school day. If you come to a question you can t answer, skip it and keep going. Go back to the question you skipped after you have answered all the other questions. Read each question carefully. There is no penalty for guessing, so try to answer every question. Scratch paper isn t permitted, but you may use any blank space in your test and answer book as workspace. You can tell me to write notes for you while working out problems. After answering all questions, We re now going to start the Kurzweil Mathematics Retake test. (Make sure the student has the test and answer book open to the correct page and is on the correct computer screen.) You may begin working. Your full attention should be on the student AT ALL TIMES as you assist in recording answers. You are responsible for maintaining the security of the test during any breaks. If an extended break such as lunch occurs, all test materials should be collected and verified, ensuring that all books, reference sheets, and 8 Fall 2007 Mathematics Retake Kurzweil Administration Manual
Script for Administering the Kurzweil Mathematics Retake Test calculators are returned before students are allowed to leave the testing room. All test materials must be placed in locked storage until testing resumes. Make sure that students are not discussing the test or exchanging information about the test in the testing room, hallways, bathrooms, or lunchroom. When the student has completed the test, complete the following steps: 1. Make sure that the student s test and answer book, mathematics reference sheet, and FCAT calculator are returned, and indicate on your record of security numbers that each book is returned. 2. Report any problems with test materials and/or test security irregularities to your school coordinator immediately. 3. Ensure that the lines at the top of the grid sheet have been completed by each student and/or proctor and that the gridded or preidentified student information is accurate and complete. 4. Return all materials, including the Kurzweil CD, immediately to your school coordinator as described on pages of the Fall 2007 FCAT Reading and Mathematics Test Administration Manual.
