1 2018 Externship Program Information First Year Externs Girls Inc. of Orange County s Externship Program is a job readiness experiential learning opportunity for current 10 th and 11 th graders (rising juniors and seniors). Its purpose is to help girls identify their career interests and prepare them for today s workforce. Girls strengthen their soft skills (e.g. interpersonal communication, leadership, and networking) as well as their hard skills (e.g. Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint). The program is designed to cultivate a college-going mentality. This is accomplished by holding trainings at university campuses, introducing on-campus resources, learning how to navigate the higher education system, and facilitating career panels comprised of working women from various industries like STEM, Human Services, Law, Business, and more. A group of rising junior and senior girls will be chosen from the application process to engage in a series of development days, a training week and an 80-hour internship at a local Orange County business or organization during the summer. Each girl who successfully completes all of the requirements will receive a $500 stipend at the end of the program. What is an Externship? Our Externs are considered interns for Girls Inc. of Orange County but complete their 80-hour summer internships externally at an outside placement. Placements are partner organizations, business, and firms around Orange County that host our Externs during the month of July. Externships are designed so girls can gain critical skills in workplace dynamics, leadership development, college readiness, and career exploration through hands-on experience in an industry of personal interest. What workforce skills do the Externs foster? Prior to starting her Externship, each Extern participates in a life skills training program focusing on professionalism, business etiquette, written, verbal and non-verbal communication, time management, telephone, and computer skills. All Externs will have basic skills in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Some benefits for the participant include: Finding out what careers are best for her Being able to amp up her resume with hands-on work experience Networking and receiving advice from professionals who are in her fields of interest Learning about attending college Campus tours of universities throughout Southern California Earning $500 after completion of the program Learning how to invest and save the money she earns 1

2 Program Cost There is a $100 fee to participate in the Externship Program. This fee covers materials, transportation, facility use, snacks, etc. If selected as an Extern, there are three different payment options available to the family: 1. Pay for the program in full ($100) by March Pay for the program in two increments ($50/$50) on March 24 and April Have the $100 fee removed from the stipend, thus the Extern will receive $400 at the completion of the program rather than $500 Payment plans will be determined after the Externs are accepted into the program. Transportation You will be required to find your own method of transportation to Extern Development Days and Externship Placements. Girls Inc. can provide bus passes if needed. Transportation to a local university campus will be provided for the Externship Training Week from specified pickup/drop off locations Program Timeline and Required Commitments Selected Externs are required to attend monthly meetings. Selected Externs are committing to being available 20 hours per week from July 9-August 3, 2018 for Externship Placements. Placement hours must be completed between the hours of 7 am and 7 pm, Monday Friday, working no more than eight (8) hours a day. Hours of operation are generally 9am-5pm, however, the site may have different hours of operation. Please be aware of this commitment as you are planning your summer.
