COURSE DESCRIPTION Development of the grammar skills acquired in Beginning Spanish I/II. Review and expansion of listening/reading/oral abilities, with an increased emphasis on composition and Spanish literature. Expansion of the awareness of the Hispanic cultures as well. Prerequisite: SPAN 1312 with grade C or better, or placement test with departmental approval. (CLEP or department test). ( ) II. COURSE RATIONALE The purpose of this course is to complete the development of the grammar skills. In addition to working toward increased proficiency in the Spanish language, this course is intended to fulfill one semester of the foreign language requirement (Humanities) as needed for Associate Degree plans and transfer credit to four-year institutions. The number of credit hours of the foreign language required for a bachelor degree in Arts varies from discipline and institution, but most of our neighbor four-year institutions require 12 to 16 credit hours. III. EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS 1. M. Knorre, T. Dorwick, A. Pérez-Gironés, W. Glass, and H. Villarreal. Puntos de Partida. 8th ed. Digital Edition Textbook. Boston: McGraw Hill, ISBN : This includes: The 8th edition Companion Volume; (black and white textbook), Centro/Online Lab Manual, Centro/ Online Workbook and a free dictionary. 2. Students need to have access to a computer, since they will have to complete their homework online, and practice at Centro (Digital Student s Workstation). 3. One set of headphones to complete the digital homework at Centro. IV. GRADE DISTRIBUTION. EVALUATION Test scores and final averages will not be curved. Students should make their best effort consistently throughout the course to receive a good grade. 2 Final Oral Presentation 10% Final Written Exam 15% Extra Credit. 2 % of Extra Credit will be offered to all students. The digital exercises or assignments (vocabulary, grammar, cultural topics, etc.) of your Textbook tab at Centro will be considered extra credit. V. CLASSROOM POLICIES AND PROCEDURES Attendance/ withdrawal policies A. Your presence in class is mandatory. Roll will be taken every day. If you are absent more than six (6) times during a MWF class, or two during a TR class for each absence beyond the allowed, your final grade will be lowered by 1% up to a maximum of 10%. The only absences that do not count beyond the allowed are those resulting from required participation in college events, hospitalizations, or family emergencies. The student is responsible for all materials covered in his/her absence. B. Excessive tardiness will not be tolerated. When a student is tardy, it is his/her responsibility to enter quietly and to not disturb class. If a student leaves class before class is dismissed, that student will be marked absent. C. Students are also responsible for dropping the class at the Registrar s office with a W; otherwise the final grade will be F. D. Spanish is the language used in the classroom; students are also expected to use their language skills outside the classroom (speaking to native speakers, watching Spanish TV or movies, reading Spanish magazines or newspapers, listening to Spanish radio, etc.) Make-up Work Policy/Late Assignments A. Students are responsible for missed work during absences; students can make up all sections of a chapter test with the exception of the listening comprehension section. B. Make-up tests for Midterm and Final Exams won t be administered unless the student is absent on official Kilgore College business. C. Students won t be able to make up the homework assignments located at Centro, student s digital workstation, after the due dates. D. Literary reports and compositions will collected on due dates, no late work will be accepted. Additional Policies A. Students with Disabilities: Any student, who because of a disability may require special arrangements in order to meet course requirements, should notify the instructor as soon as possible to make necessary accommodations. Students should also contact the special population counselor for specific documentation of the required accommodations. B. All cell phones and other electronic devices should be turned off, and they shouldn t be visible during class or exams Talavera Hoferer Page 2
3 Academic Honesty Kilgore College expects students to do their own work. The department will not tolerate academic dishonesty, including plagiarism (submitting someone else's work as your own). The following information concerning academic dishonesty is taken from the Student Handbook section found under "Categories of Misconduct" and reads as follows: Misconduct for which students are subject to discipline falls into the following categories: A. Acts of dishonesty, including but not limited to the following: 1. Academic dishonesty including but not limited to cheating and plagiarism. a. The term "cheating" includes, but is not limited to (1) acquiring information for specifically assigned projects, working with one or more persons on an exam that is to be taken as an individual, or observing work from another individual's exam; (2) providing information on an exam that is to be done individually or giving out the exam or content prior to the exam time. b. The term "plagiarism" includes, but is not limited to (1) failing to credit sources used in a work product in an attempt to pass off the work as one's own; (2) attempting to receive credit for work performed by another, including papers obtained in whole or in part from individuals or from other sources, including the internet. c. Misconduct also includes conspiracy to commit an act of academic dishonesty. Additional information is found under "Student Disciplinary Procedures." Statement on Civility in the Classroom Students are expected to assist in maintaining a classroom environment that is conducive to learning. Inappropriate or distractive classroom behavior is prohibited in order to assure that everyone has opportunity to gain from time spent in class. Should a disruptive classroom incident occur, the faculty member in charge may remove the student on either a temporary or a permanent basis. Students have the right to appeal through the appropriate channels (taken from the college website at under the heading of Student Handbook). VI. COMMON COURSE OUTCOMES Seven chapters will be covered this semester The program outcomes identified here are based on the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21 st Century (National Standards in Foreign Education Project) Foreign language education that focuses on student s ability to use the language in authentic situations. A. The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of uncomplicated prose, poetry, fiction and contemporary material in the target language. 4 Short readings on seven chapter tests Midterm & Final Written Exams B. The student will converse in the target language on practical daily subject and be understood by speakers of Spanish. Listening comprehension sections on seven chapter tests Interview (ask/give information) a tutor or the instructor on a familiar topic during three tutorial interviews Final Oral Presentation C. The student will write essays in the target language in complex sentences on various topics: literary, cultural material, and everyday subjects. A minimum of 200-word writing sample included in seven chapters workbook exercises Two compositions in both rough draft and final form building up to a maximum essay of 225 words Three literary/cultural summaries in both rough draft and final form building up to a maximum essay of 225 words At least one writing section in a minimum of seven chapters tests during the semester E. The student will demonstrate an understanding of Spanish spoken at normal speed with some repetition on a variety of selected topics in various formats. Interview (ask/give information) a tutor or the instructor on a familiar topic during three tutorial interviews Listening comprehension sections on seven chapter tests Oral final Presentation F. The student will demonstrate critical thinking skills of deduction and inference about grammar patterns and syntax in order to extract meaning from texts and verbal discourse. 5 G. The student will demonstrate developing awareness of cultural values, customs beliefs, and ideologies of the Hispanic world. The student will demonstrate familiarity with technologies allowing them to access sources in the following areas: current events from the target country, bibliographical and other sources related to coursework, contemporary culture sources, and interactive communication sites All homework is done digitally on Centro (internet student s workstation) Three cultural and literary reports/ two cultural essays Seven chapters of laboratory exercises H. The student will demonstrate oral proficiency to the ACTFL Intermediate Low Level.
