3 GCSE SUBJECTS COURSE DETAILS Introduction The purpose of this booklet is to give parents and pupils a clear idea of what is involved in each of the subjects offered at GCSE Level in the British Section of the Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle. In 3eGCSE all subjects are compulsory, except Art and Latin which are optional. At the end of 3GCSE all students sit French GCSE and then in 2GCSE French AS Level. All other subjects taken are at GCSE level. In 2eGCSE pupils study 9 subjects. Of these, the following are compulsory: French, Maths, and English and English literature, which count as 2 subjects. Students then select 5 further subjects from those on offer to make the total of 9. The results achieved by students in the British Section are consistently at the top of Kensington & Chelsea league tables and the majority of students stay with us to continue a programme of A Level studies leading to successful university applications. More details and advice will be offered before the choices are made. 3

4 GCSE SUBJECTS COURSE DETAILS How to develop good study skills Have a good study routine go over work done during the day Learn from your mistakes find out where you went wrong Find out how to improve from friends and teachers Use your time wisely divide time evenly between your subjects Don t waste free time during the school day ask for a study room from Mme Feurtet or the Vie Scolaire or go to the library Don t work if you are over- tired - you won t retain information Identify key points, ideas, techniques practise using them Look, cover, check, write from memory redo if you get it wrong Have a folder for each subject divide into topics Use index cards to write key points of topics Be organised with filing avoid building up messy piles of paper Highlight key information in colour - green for I know this, orange for I need to go over this again and red for Help! Develop a study timetable and stick to it Set yourself short term goals write them up and tick them off Develop checklists of things you need to know and revisit them Use a variety of study materials revision guides, internet, textbooks Find a good learning technique and stick to it if it works for you Read round the subject find articles, newspapers Find the right place to work in distraction free and quiet Turn off electronic devices unless you need them for work Ensure you are clear about exam requirements e.g. what you need to know for an A* and put the key elements into any work regularly use the exam board specification materials Work with a friend or family member to help you remember Work in timed conditions at times for essays or past papers Improve your timing develop exam technique 4

5 GCSE SUBJECTS COURSE DETAILS Revision Ideas 1. Arrange a working group meeting of friends doing the same subject. You will be able to teach one another. Ask Mme Feurtet or the Vie Scolaire for a free room. 2. Work with a friend to do revision. 3. Get someone at home to test you. 4. Use post-it notes to plaster your walls, the mirror, the fridge and even the toilet door with key facts and words. 5. Create mind maps to link key ideas. 6. Create A3 posters to highlight key points and use colour. 7. Record oral/key ideas on MP3. Playback before going to sleep. 8. Develop memory techniques. Put knowledge in a certain building e.g. the British Section building. Allocate ideas to particular rooms and help you remember them. 9. Use symbols, codes, abbreviations in bright colours, in large fonts and display prominently. 10. Write notes. Highlight in pink things to do again and in green things you remember. 11. 6 GCSE SUBJECTS COURSE DETAILS ART AT GCSE LEVEL Fine Art AQA 8202 Exam Paper codes: Component 1: 8202/1 and Component 2: 8202/2 The GCSE in Art is a two year course with 60% of the marks going to coursework and 40% for the final examination. Topics taught: Fine art, drawing and painting. Skills taught: observation, analysis, perspective, tone, colour, history of painting and sculpture. We also extend into monotype, 3D work, mixed media, and photography and video are also welcome additions in a student's portfolio. The Coursework, (Component 1) is called the PORTFOLIO, and consists of: One Sustained Project, a creative journey from initial idea to final outcome plus A Selection of Further Work undertaken during the student s course of study. This work is marked as a whole and needs to satisfy AQA s four assessment objectives which broadly cover the following: drawing from observation, developing ideas, experimenting with different media, making critical judgements, analyzing the work of other artists, and bringing work to a conclusion. These criteria are assessed on quality and quantity. The Art Department aims to meet these objectives at the same time as encouraging an individual and creative response in all pupils. Art at this level can be a rewarding and creative activity that complements other subjects in the curriculum as well as adding to and balancing the list of qualifications for further study. The Exam (Component 2) is called the EXTERNALLY SET ASSIGNMENT and consists of a choice of questions set by AQA, given out from the 1 st January to allow a sketchbook of preparatory work in answer to one chosen question. The preparatory work must meet the assessment criteria. The exam is spread over ten hours, usually on two or three sessions/days in May. The preparation and the ten hour examination are marked as a whole. Although skill is rewarded and some pupils have more natural talent than others in Art, there is still room to enjoy and be creative whatever the level of ability as well as getting good results. 7 BIOLOGY AT IGCSE LEVEL (Edexcel 4BI1) GCSE SUBJECTS COURSE DETAILS Exam codes and exam papers: Paper 1 4BI1/1B untiered 2hrs 61.1% of total Paper2 4BI1/2B untiered 1hr 15m 38.9% of total Percentage in examination : 100% The Biology IGCSE is designed to have depth and breadth of material, and include aspects of science appropriate for the 21 st century, providing a challenge for our students. It will give them an excellent foundation for progress to AS and A2 in this subject, and is a valued and respected qualification by universities worldwide. The course has a straightforward linear, single tier assessment, and the assessment of investigate skills is done through the examinations. There are two externally assessed examinations, taken at the end of the two year course. The Biology IGCSE enables students to: acquire knowledge and understanding of biological facts, concepts and principles develop an appreciation of the significance of biological facts, concepts and principles and the skills needed for their use in new and changing situations appreciate the importance of accurate experimental work to scientific method and reporting form hypotheses and design experiments to test them sustain and develop an enjoyment of, and interest in, the study of living organisms evaluate, in terms of their biological knowledge and understanding, the benefits and drawbacks of scientific and technological developments, including those related to social, environmental and economic issues. All 3GCSE students will take Biology IGCSE, and the majority continue it in 2GCSE. A minimum of two sciences is strongly recommended in 2GCSE. 7

Acquire knowledge and understanding of chemical facts, terminology, concepts, principal and practical techniques. Apply the principles and concepts of Chemistry, including those related to the applications of Chemistry, to different contexts. Evaluate chemical information, making judgements on the basis of this information. Appreciate the practical nature of Chemistry, developing experimental and investigative skills based on the correct and safe laboratory techniques. Analyse, interpret and evaluate data and experimental methods, drawing conclusions that are consistent with evidence from experimental activities and suggesting possible improvements and further investigations. Recognise the importance of accurate experimental work and reporting scientific methods in Chemistry. Select, organise and present relevant information clearly and logically using appropriate vocabulary, definitions and conventions. Develop a logical approach to problem solving in a wider context. Select and apply appropriate areas of mathematics relevant to chemistry as set out under each topic. Prepare for more advanced courses in Chemistry and for other courses that require knowledge of Chemistry. The IGCSE in Chemistry comprises TWO externally assessed papers at the end of the class of Seconde. There is no coursework in this specification. Chemistry is essential and compulsory if students want to undertake Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary studies. 8

9 GCSE SUBJECTS COURSE DETAILS What is 'English'? ENGLISH AT GCSE LEVEL (OCR J352 and J351) 'English' is a compulsory subject at GCSE. 'English' at GCSE in the British Section consists of two examinations: English and English Literature. Therefore, you will finish 2 e GCSE with two separate qualifications and you will receive a level 1-9 for each exam. Speaking and Listening will not form part of a GCSE grade but will be awarded as a separate speaking level - Pass /Merit/Distinction The examination board is OCR. is the web site. What is the course like? The GCSE course is studied over both 3 e GCSE and 2 e GCSE years (years 10 and 11) starting on the first day of 3eme to the start of the GCSE exams in May in the 2nd year. Final assessments will take place at the end of 2GCSE in the form of externally marked exams. English Literature J352 - Two exams: 1. Exploring Modern and Literary Heritage texts 2 hours. Pupils will study a number of units which cover Modern and 19 th Century Literary Heritage Prose, Poetry and Plays. Teachers choose one Modern Text and one 19th Century Prose text. 10 GCSE SUBJECTS COURSE DETAILS English Language J351 - Two exams 1. Communicating Information and Ideas: 2 Hours Comparing unseen texts from 19 th / 20 th / 21 st Century. Pupils write one piece of non-fiction, considering purpose, genre and audience. 2. Exploring effects and impact: 2 Hours Exploring and analysing two unseen extracts from 20/ 21 st Century. Pupils write one piece of creative and original writing. Textbooks 3e: OCR GCSE English Language: Book 1: Developing the skills for Component 01 and Component 02 2e: OCR GCSE English Language: Student Book 2: Assessment preparation for Component 01 and Component 02 Pupils will have to complete a Spoken Language assessment which is awarded PASS/MERIT/DISTINCTION. This does not form part of their final levels but must be passed in order to achieve GCSE English. Students usually present a speech on a topic of their choice. This is marked by their teacher. This is course rigorous, but we feel it is challenging and exciting for our students, and will help more thoroughly prepare those who wish to study English at A Level and beyond. There is a large unseen component in both Language papers and we encourage pupils to prepare for this both in lessons and at home in their choice of fiction and non-fiction reading. It is essential that pupils keep up with their own reading. They can find recommendations on the school website. 10

PAPER 1 - LISTENING - 45 minutes - 25% - 45 marks Candidates listen to a number of recordings and answer questions testing comprehension Externally assessed PAPER 2 READING - 1 hour - 25% - 45 marks Candidates read a number of texts and answer questions testing comprehension Externally assessed PAPER 3 SPEAKING - 15 minutes - 25% marks Candidates complete two role plays, a topic presentation/conversation and a general conversation Internally assessed/externally moderated (Individual Centres are responsible for conducting the tests and for the initial assessment, which is then subject to moderation by Cambridge). GCSE SUBJECTS COURSE DETAILS Skills Taught: Students study social and technological change alongside highlights of French-speaking artistic culture, including francophone music and cinema. Students also explore the influence of the past on present-day French-speaking communities. Throughout their studies, they will learn the language in the context of French-speaking countries and the issues and influences which have shaped them. Students will study a text or a film. Assessment tasks will be varied and cover listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Students will develop their understanding of themes relating to the society and culture of the countries where French is spoken, and their language skills; they will do this by using authentic spoken and written sources in French. Students following this specification will develop their language knowledge, understanding and skills through: using language spontaneously to initiate communication; using language-learning skills and strategies, including communication strategies; listening and responding to spoken covering different registers and types; reading and responding to a variety of texts including contemporary, historical and literary texts; inferring meaning from complex spoken and written material, including factual and abstract content; assimilating and using information from spoken and written sources, including material from online media; summarising information from spoken and written sources; translating an unseen passage from French into English translating unseen sentences from English into French. 13 GCSE SUBJECTS - COURSE DETAILS Assessment is by Examination GEOGRAPHY AT GCSE LEVEL (AQA 8035) In the British Section Geography is taught as a separate subject in its own right. From 2016 we have been following the new AQA Specification which covers both physical and human Geography. In the first year students will study the Challenge of Natural Hazards, including volcanoes, earthquakes, weather and climate change, the Living World, including ecosystems, tropical rainforests and hot deserts and finally Physical Landscapes in the UK. In the second year we will concentrate on Urban Issues and Challenges, the Changing Economic World and Resource Management. During the two years, students will learn through a variety of media including films, the Internet and will also complete compulsory fieldwork activities outside the school. They will develop practical geographical skills such as using different types of maps, constructing and interpreting graphs, using and extracting information from a range of sources including written articles and photographs (aerial and satellite) from newspapers and magazines. The new Specification includes a greater emphasis on mathematical skills than previously and there will also be opportunities to develop and use ICT skills. Assessment will be at the end of the two years in three exams:- Paper 1 Living with the physical environment (35%), Paper 2 Challenges in the human environment (35%) Paper 3 Geographical Applications (30%) Students are encouraged to watch news programmes and documentaries about the natural world, to visit museums and travel as much as possible and sometimes to present their own photographs from personal holidays to their classmates to encourage them to develop their interest in the world in all its aspects. 14 GCSE SUBJECTS - COURSE DETAILS GERMAN AT IGCSE LEVEL CIE The igcse Cambridge is designed for those learning German as a foreign language and use the language effectively for purposes of practical communication. The course is based on the linked language skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing. The syllabus also aims to offer insights into the culture and civilisation of German speaking countries, thus encouraging positive attitudes towards language. The combination of knowledge and skills in Cambridge IGCSE foreign language syllabuses gives learners a solid foundation for further study. Candidates who achieve grades A* to C are well prepared to follow a wide range of courses including Cambridge International A Level. 15 HISTORY AT IGCSE LEVEL (9-1) (3GCSE) (Edexcel 4HI1) GCSE SUBJECTS - COURSE DETAILS Exam codes and exam papers: 4HI1/01 (Options 3 and 6) and 4HI1/02 (Options A1 and B2) Percentage in examinations: 100% across two 90 minute exams, externally assessed Each exam paper is worth 60 marks. In 3GCSE students are prepared for Paper 2, Investigation and Breadth Studies: A1- The Origins and Course of the First World War, B2 Changes in Medicine, c c1948 In the second year students will be prepared for Paper 1, Depth Studies: 3 Germany: Development of Dictatorship, A World Divided: Superpower Relations, Focus of History Teaching: Teaching relies on discussion and evaluation. Documentaries and film footage are used to embed and embellish knowledge whilst lessons seek to develop students writing and argumentation skills. Students will gain a broad overview of the twentieth century and, crucially be able to recognise both trends and factors affecting the whole globe. Students will soon grasp ideas like Communism, Nazism and Imperialism; they will further explore developments like Post-Colonialism and regime change. Students will gain an invaluable overview of international social and political dynamics. 16 GCSE SUBJECTS - COURSE DETAILS ITALIAN AT IGCSE LEVEL (CIE 0535) The course is designed for those learning Italian as a foreign language and use the language effectively for purposes of practical communication; it is based on the linked languages skills of listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The combination of knowledge and skills in Cambridge IGCSE foreign language syllabuses gives learners a solid foundation for further study. Candidates who achieve grades A* to C are well prepared to follow a wide range of courses including A level EDEXCEL Italian. 17 GCSE SUBJECTS - COURSE DETAILS LATIN AT GCSE LEVEL (OCR J282F) Exam Paper Codes: 01 Language External Assessment, 03 Prose Literature B External Assessment, 05 Verse Literature B External Assessment This course gives students the opportunity to study the language and literature of ancient Rome; it will develop analytical skills and intellectual flexibility. 3 e GCSE The number of students in a given year allows the creation of an independent Latin class in 3eGCSE, the vast majority of whom continue into 2eGCSE. We work on the part of the British syllabus the pupils are not familiar with: the grammar of the language. This will form students' approach to, and consequent ability to translate, a previously unseen Latin story as required for Language unit. This more active knowledge of grammar will enable them to prepare more easily the Prose and Verse set papers. 2 e GCSE We study set texts and continue to concentrate on the grammar of, and approach to, an unseen text. The exam is taken at the Higher Tier level with the OCR board. There are three papers: J282/01 Language - 1 hour 30mn 50% of the grade This paper consists of a linked set of Latin Passages for translation and comprehension. J282/03 Prose Literature - 1 hour 25% of the grade There is a choice between two prose texts. This paper consists of passages of Latin and you will answer comprehension, critical, and translation questions. J282/05 Verse Literature - 1 hour 25% of the grade You will have a choice between two verse texts. This paper consists of passages of Latin taken from the set texts and you will answer comprehension, critical, and translation questions. In Year 2, students are streamed according to ability and attainment. There is a 'fast' stream of approximately 25 pupils and two parallel slower streams of approximately students each. Exams are available at Higher Tier for all of our students (and the grades awarded are 9 to 4).
