Here you ll find everything you need to deliver your lesson, including a plan and resources, as well as this link to a slide deck. The resources can be printed as individual worksheets, one per pupil, or as a booklet. 2

3 GUIDANCE PACK FOR KS2 TEACHERS Pre-reading and preparation Everything is ready to go, but do spend some time having a read through so you are confident in how the content fits together. On slide 9, there is space for you to choose three of the jobs from worksheet 3 below to focus on with your class, and copy and paste the images onto the slide. Perhaps consider any visitors you have recently had, or are due to have (especially if you have a volunteer coming in to deliver a talk as part of the Big Class Challenge!), or any jobs pupils will have encountered in the curriculum linking this lesson to other learning will help pupils relate to job roles more easily. All the key information you need to guide your pupils through the lesson is included in the notes on the slide deck, and you don t need to do any special preparation or research to be able to lead the lesson effectively. However, if you do want to gain a bit more of an understanding about the post-school pathways you ll be exploring with your pupils, do have a look at Section 2 of our Post-School Success Toolkit. We hope you enjoy the thinking and discussions this lesson will provoke in your pupils. We anticipate that it may bring up lots of questions from them that you may not necessarily be able to answer, but we have directed pupils to a number of websites on the final guidance sheets where they can find more information, and our Post-School Success Toolkit is a great place for you as a teacher to explore this work in more detail. Join the Big Class Challenge community If you deliver the lesson during the national Big Class Challenge weeks between December, you and your pupils will be part of a movement including other schools up and down the country taking part in this activity at the same time. It may be that time just isn t available during December, but if that s the case, don t worry; this lesson can be delivered at any time. Share your experiences We d love to hear if you took part in the Big Class Challenge via Twitter. You can share your experience of getting involved by posting your own tweet and incorporating our Challenge the Impossible campaign hashtag #TFChallenge, or use our template tweet I just took part in the Big Class Challenge with my class at [insert school name, using your Twitter handle if you have one] #TFChallenge. You might also like to attach a picture to your tweet. Please encourage fellow teachers in your school and network to take part in the Big Class Challenge and deliver this lesson to their pupils! Finally, remember that to complement the lessons teachers are running, we are asking volunteers to deliver talks to pupils about their careers, and the journey they took from school to get there. 4 THE BIG CLASS CHALLENGE Lesson Plan Lesson overview Lesson objective This lesson will give pupils the opportunity to identify the types of jobs best suited to them on consideration of their own talents and passions, and equip them with some short-term strategies for furthering their understanding of subject areas, careers and pathways. The lesson also aims to dispel common myths around post-school pathways, and prompt pupils to consider longer-term goals. To explore the pathways linked to your talents and passions, and how you can develop your knowledge of these options. Success criteria To identify some jobs you may be interested in based on your talents and passions. To know some of the things you might do at university and on an apprenticeship. To understand how you can gain pathway and career knowledge in and out of school. Lesson outline and timings Do now (10 minutes) Beginning (15 minutes) Teacher Instructions on the board for when pupils arrive (slide 1). After 5 minutes, run through lesson overview, objective and success criteria before taking some feedback on the do now questions (or allowing pupils to share their thoughts with a partner) (slides 2-5). Take pupil thoughts on the extension task, but don t address any questions at this stage explain that you will be coming back to their questions at the end of the lesson. Ask pupils to think, pair, share what the difference between a passion and a talent is. Pupils who are able to establish definitions quickly could also consider what the connection is between passions and talents and job choices (slide 6). Cold call on some groups for feedback, before highlighting that the connection is that what we love doing our passions, and what we are good at our talents, should help us to choose our job, as we will spend a lot of time over our lives at work, and want to make sure we enjoy and are successful during that time. Select a pupil to help you model the next task, by getting them to ask you the questions on the interview sheet and filling your answers in on the whiteboard (slide 7), before asking pupils to spend five minutes interviewing one another and writing down their answers (slide 8). They will need to swap worksheets as they will need a record of their own (rather than their partner s) responses. They could simply fill this in independently if desired. Explain that you are now going to explore how talents and passions might link to some types of jobs. Run through the three job roles you have chosen and populated on the slide (slide 9), and ask pupils to discuss and feedback what the talents and passions related to these jobs might be. Pupils On arrival independently use worksheet 1 to answer the questions on their perception of university and apprenticeships. Extension activity: what questions do they have about university? What questions do they have about apprenticeships? Some will have the opportunity to feedback thoughts. Think, pair, share what the difference between a passion and a talent is. Extension: what is the connection between passions and talents and job choices? some will have the opportunity to feedback thoughts. Swap worksheet 2 and ask a partner the interview questions, filling in their answers. Discuss the talents and passions linked to the job roles on the slide. Ask them to think, pair, share with a partner, identifying the three roles they would like to learn more about based on those that match their talents and passions most closely. Explain that once we leave school we start to learn the specific things that prepare us to do these jobs, either at university, or in the workplace, often on an apprenticeship. Remind pupils of the basic definitions of university and apprenticeship at the bottom of worksheet 1, before splitting the room in two one side the mind map all the things we might do at university, and one to mind map all the things we might do on an apprenticeship (slide 11). Nominate some pupils to feedback and generate two class mind-maps on the whiteboard. Play videos 1 and 2 developed by King s College London, on university. Ask pupils to make notes as they watch of any changes or additions the class need to make to their university mind map. Take some feedback. Add in any of your own reflections here on the university experience. Play video 3 developed by Amazing Apprenticeships, on apprenticeships, and repeat the exercise. To wrap up this section, ask pupils if any of the questions they had about university and apprenticeships at the start of the lesson have been answered? If so, which ones? Explain to pupils that considering options and the future beyond school is not something that can be tackled in one lesson and that you are going to give them worksheet 5 which suggests some things they might do at home to learn more about the topics in today s lesson. At the bottom they should add any questions they still have about university and apprenticeships, which they could also investigate independently using the websites on the advice sheet. N.B. If you would prefer not to use worksheet 5 for home learning, it could be used to influence other classroom-based activities in future as a follow up to this lesson. To wrap up, ask pupils to watch video 4 developed by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (slide 13). Ask them to think, pair, share what the message of the video is, before taking some feedback. Emphasise as your closing message that pupils can access any job they want to if they work hard towards the right qualifications through university or an apprenticeship it doesn t matter what their gender is, their family background, etc. Revisit success criteria to finish (slide 14). Optional: run through any follow up (see below) (slide 15). Independently use worksheet 3 to highlight any of the talents or passions related to the eight jobs that match their own, using what they wrote on worksheet 2 as a reminder Think, pair, share with a partner the three roles that had talents and passions most closely linked to their own that they would like to research further. Work in threes and use worksheet 4 to mind map the things they might do at university/on an apprenticeship some will have the opportunity to feedback thoughts. Watch videos 1, 2 and 3 and make notes on any changes or additions that need to be made to the class mind maps. Some will have the opportunity to feedback thoughts. Reflect on whether questions on university and apprenticeships from the start of the lesson have been answered. Add any questions they have about university and apprenticeships to the bottom of worksheet 5. Watch the video and reflect on its message some will have the opportunity to feedback thoughts. Follow Up Action plans to be stored according to school practice (e.g. glued into planners). Could be revisited at parents evening/review days as a supplement to discussions around academic progress. 5
