2 Introduction Thank you for registering for a Teacher Effectiveness module in the Pennsylvania SAS PD Center! If you are new to the experience, you will find several options designed to meet the needs you have as a classroom teacher with a goal of improving student achievement and earning Act 48 hours. If this is your first course in PD Center, welcome to the experience. This document will help you understand what to expect and how to navigate through your course(s). Your instructor is also an excellent resource for any questions, suggestions, or ideas you have. If you have previously taken a course in PD Center, you may be aware that the SAS Portal has been updated to improve functionality and to meet the criteria for a mobile site. As part of these changes, all Teacher Effectiveness PD Center modules and General SAS PD Center courses are now hosted within the Learning Management System (LMS) Canvas. However, you will still access your courses via PD Center, as you always have. The transition to the new interface will be gradual (over several months), so you may discover that you are taking or finishing some courses with an interface that looks different from another. Your instructor can clarify any questions or concerns you have about the differences. If you are familiar with the Canvas LMS, please note that PDE hosts its own instance of Canvas, and that it should always be accessed via PD Center on the SAS Portal. Doing so ensures that your information and submissions are up to date and in synch with the systems. 1
3 PD Center Registering For Classes Follow the steps below to register for classes: 1. Navigate to pdesas.org. 2. Click on Login. 3. Use your SAS credentials to log in. 4. Click on Teacher Tools. 2
4 5. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on PD Center. 6. Go to Menu Course Catalog/Registration. 7. Click on the Framework for Teaching Domain you are interested in. 3
5 8. Click on (drill down to) the Framework for Learning Component of the Domain that you are interested in. 9. Click on Options Register. 10. Enter your PPID, confirm your PPID, and click on Register. 11. You will receive an auto-generated with more information about your class choice(s), or you may follow the steps below to access the class for which you registered. 4
6 Accessing Your Classes Follow the steps below to access your classes: 1. Follow steps 1 5 in the Registering for Classes. 2. Go to Menu My Classes. 3. Identify the class you would like to access. 4. Click on Options Go To Classroom. 5
7 Canvas What is Canvas? Canvas is a Learning Management System, or LMS, and is central to your online course experience. It is a platform for content delivery, assignments, grading, and communication with your instructor. Canvas is accessed via PD Center, and you will automatically enter the Canvas environment after following the steps above. Canvas is where you will find the content for your class. Canvas Interface The general layout of Canvas consists of: (1) The Global Navigation Menu, across the top, which is always available and is not specific to any one course or module. (2) The Help Corner, at the upper right of the screen, which gives quick access to Settings and your Inbox. (3) The Module Navigation Menu, on the left side of the screen, which is specific to the active course. (4) The Content Area, in the middle of the screen, which contains the active content. (5) The Sidebar, at the right of the screen, which offers additional information and choices
8 Navigating Within a Module Module Navigation The module contains six pages: Overview, Question, Investigate, Explore, Practice, and Apply. All modules have an identical structure. There are two options for navigating within a module: the Menu Bar and the Next button. The Menu Bar allows you navigate directly to any page within a module. Alternatively, you may use the Next button at the bottom of each page to proceed through the module sequentially. Menu Bar Next Button 7
9 Assignments Activities Modules include activities to provide avenues to reflect on learning, deepen understanding, evaluate ways to improve teaching practice, and lead to improved student achievement. The Assignments area of your course is where you will submit your preassessment, knowledge check(s), and final assessment activities. Each assignment must be completed and you must score a Proficient or higher for course credit. You will have one opportunity to resubmit assignments. Assignments To access an assignment, click on the Title of the assignment you want to view. Tip: You may want to compose your assignment in an external program (e.g., Word) first and then copy and paste the text into your assignment. That way your work will be saved in the event of internet connection interruption, browser crashing, or other technology fails. 8
10 Module Evaluation Upon completion of this module, please take a moment to complete the evaluation. Your feedback helps us ascertain areas of success as well as where we may improve. 9
11 Act 48 Credits After successful completion of each course or module, Act 48 credits will be processed by the Department of Education. Act 48 credits should post to your PERMS site within 3 to 4 weeks of completing the course. 10
