2 Course Overview Course Description: Statics is the branch of engineering mechanics that is concerned with the analysis of forces on physical systems in static equilibrium. It will also help you interpret the forces supporting objects we encounter in our daily lives. Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course you will be able to: Understand the basic principles that govern the static equilibrium of bodies under the action of forces Apply the knowledge and tools of statics to solve engineering problems You should also expect to: Take responsibility for your learning: o Read textbook on your own o Ask questions: to me, your classmates, and yourself o Turn in excellent assignments demonstrating your knowledge of the solution Become an active participant in your Statics education, taking full advantage of lectures, texts, homework, and office hours. Teaching Philosophy: The successful completion of this course requires your attention, hard work, and respect. In return, I will strive to create a classroom setting that encourages learning, critical thinking, and respect for all students. I will endeavor to meet your academic needs, and as such encourage all students to take advantage of the weekly office hours. I enjoy helping students outside of the classroom. However, please be respectful of my time, as I have other duties to perform within the department. This course will be challenging, but your hard work will be rewarded by positive feedback, representative grades, and better understanding of the mechanical and dynamic world and necessary preparation for future courses. Group Work: Copying of assignments is prohibited. However, I encourage you to work alongside each other as you work on homework assignments. The interaction of teaching and learning within a group setting is a great way to learn the principles taught in class. Of course, exams are a purely individual responsibility. Honor Code: This course will adhere to the Academic Integrity Policy of the Colorado State University General Catalog (Page 7) and the Student Conduct Code. Honors students enrolled in this course are held to high standards of integrity. Academic integrity is expected within all assignments for this course. It is expected that students will use their own knowledge and skill for assignments unless directed to do otherwise. Incidents of cheating, plagiarism or knowingly providing false or incorrect information are considered serious. Consequences of these incidents are at the discretion of the faculty member involved and may consist of confiscation of assignments, an F grade, or reporting to the CSU Student Conduct office. 2
3 Honors Competencies and Skills for Honors Studies ( PICC feedback). The CSU University Honors Program has prioritized four general competencies skills that should be addressed in each honors course (including HONR 192, 193, 392, and 492). These skills include (1) Professionalism, interpersonal skills, and emotional intelligence; (2) Interdisciplinary learning integrated with global and/or cultural viewpoints; (3) Critical thinking; and (4) Creativity and problem solving. This is a two-stage process. First students will complete a self-evaluation of these skills at the beginning of the semester. At the end of the semester instructors will provide feedback on individual student progress towards these competencies. The feedback is part of the University Honors Program; it is for advising purposes only and is confidential. It is not part of a student s grades or academic record. A standardized rubric is used to provide feedback for growth in these areas and to measure the Honors Programs progress in helping students to develop these skills through their academic career. The feedback categories and activities/assignments used to measure progress in CIVE are listed below and noted in the assignment descriptions. Creativity & problem solving Homework and Exams Computational methods for nonlinear problems Engineering Design Problems Each student will be evaluated according to the following process: At week 4, you will rate yourself in these 4 categories using an online form, according to the following levels: M for Mastered; P for Proficient; D for Developing; and B for Basic. A description of each of these levels is attached to this syllabus. At week 16 (finals week), I will evaluate each student and provide written comments for each category, using the same 4 levels (M, P, D, or B) Remember, it is unusual to have an M rating as a first- or second-year level student. The objective is to show improvement as the student progresses from the 1 st year to the 4 th year of the program. Of course, all assessments are kept confidential. Names will not be included in any reports from the aggregated data. 3
4 Course Logistics Textbook: Vector Mechanics for Engineers: Statics. 9 th Edition, Beer and Johnston, published by McGraw- Hill. Calculators: This course will foll ow the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) calculator policy for exams. This is the same policy as used for the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. The only calculator models acceptable for use during the exam are as follows: Casio Hewlett Packard Texas Instruments All fx-115 models. Any Casio calculator must contain fx-115 in its model name The HP 33s and HP 35s models, but no others All TI-30X and TI-36X models. Course Grading: The grading breakdown is as follows: Homework 20% Quizzes 10% Design Report (1) 5% Midterm Exams (3) (1) 15%, (2) 15%, (3) 15% Final Exam (comprehensive) 20% Term grades for this course will use the ± grading system as described in the CSU catalog. Grades will be assigned according to the following range: % A 80 89% B 70 79% C 60 69% D < 60% F This range will not be shifted up. However, it may be shifted down based on relative difficulty of homework exercises and exams. If, at the end of the semester, a student s score is 0.5% from a higher grade, then that student will receive the higher grade if the student s semester homework score is higher than the student s overall semester score. 4
5 Reading Assignments: Reading assignments will be assigned to complement lectures. Ideally, the assigned material should be studied prior to the corresponding lecture. You are responsible for the assigned readings besides the content that is presented during lectures. Homework: Weekly Assignments: Homework assignments will be posted and announced in class each Friday. Assignments are due the following Friday at the beginning of the lecture. Homework must be turned in to the instructor in the classroom. No late homework assignments will be accepted. However, your lowest homework grade will be dropped. Guidelines: See attached sheet (points will be taken off for failing to meet these guidelines) Grading System: 1. Each homework assignment will have 4-6 problems 2. Two problems (not indicated until after the assignment has been turned in) will be thoroughly graded, each on a 0-5 scale 3. Remaining problems will be graded on a 0-2 scale: 2 for correct, 1 for complete but not correct, 0 for incomplete Quizzes: There will be 10 in-class quizzes during the semester to test students on material covered in a recent lecture. Students will be notified of the date of each quiz. Your lowest quiz score will be dropped Engineering Design Technical Reports: There will be 1 engineering design problem assigned during the semester, to be accompanied by a brief technical report following guidelines provided in class. Reports will be graded for correct design, correct English, and overall presentation. Exams: There will be 3 mid-term exams (to be held during the regular class hour) and a Final Exam. Exam material will be drawn from lectures and from the textbook. Collaboration or copying from others during an exam will not be tolerated and may result in 0 credit, dismissal from the class, and referral to Student Conduct Services. One side of one page of notes will be allowed for each exam, with two sides of a single page allowed for the final. Makeup exam policy: For students who cannot attend regular exams due to university business duty, serious illness, or family emergency (all with written proof), a makeup exam may be arranged AFTER the regular exam. The instructor must be notified prior to the exam, and no exceptions will be made without a legitimate reason and a timely arrangement. 5
