2 Overview Why Train the Trainer? How the sessions are conducted Interactive NOT monologue Big-Picture view Scenarios for training (i.e. how, when and where will I possibly use this?) Pre-requisites: Willingness to learn this way of doing things Willingness to engage with people in need Willingness to develop a genuine disinterested caring and love for people Willingness to use whatever technology is available (even one-on-one)

3 How do you Plan to use CELEBRATIONS? Interactive segment: Before, during, and after the EVENT in LA? What outcomes or results are you looking for? Who will be involved? And are they on-board? Who have been facilitators before? How to be an effective facilitator? Attitude Preparation: personal, props, etc. Helpers-assistants

4 CELEBRATIONS: What it is What it is not! CELEBRATIONS is An acronym for 12 healthful-living principles as such it FACILITATES remembering and application of the principles involved Openly Judeo-Christian Consonant with a Seventh-day Adventist worldview Scientifically evidence-based in general A good way to help individuals who want to help others become equipped to help using solid, tested materials that are attractive and engaging (while helping themselves to consolidate healthful lifestyle practices) Currently scripted (but may be available and used in other formats) An out-of-the-box seminar/workshop/discussion group package

5 CELEBRATIONS: What it is What it is not! CELEBRATIONS is NOT: Perfect Righteousness by works, health, acronym, etc. The only way to teach health principles A magical prescription for health Not RELIGIOUS Coercive A business nor a business model

6 Why CELEBRATIONS? What are we celebrating? How accessible is it? Cost: book, PowerPoints Availability Language How is it acquired? Useful Ideas: Public Workshops and seminars (invited, self-conducted, both) Church-based workshops and seminars for the members, for the public, both. Combined with other community engagement activities e.g.

7 Outline Write an outline for all the details of your training program so that you have consistency when training various groups 7

8 Your Presentation Skills An effective presentation should take into account: The audience The setting The time constraints The desired outcome(s) An effective presentation should include: Content. Structure. Packaging. Human element. 8

9 Preparing for the Presentation If you fail to prepare is be prepared to fail. Take care of the details in advance: Verify dates and times. Who will help and who does what Room setup. Printing/handouts. Audio-visual equipment. Training materials and supplies. Food. 9

10 Preparing for the Presentation Prepare: Organize your presentation logically. Tailor presentation to situation and audience. Use notes or an outline. Have a clock or watch handy and visible Practice: Rehearse and time your presentation. Practice the activities. Know how to use audio-visual equipment. Prepare to answer questions. 10

11 Implementing Training Space Room: size, comfort level, lighting, distractions. Equipment availability and power supply (electrical outlets) Writing desks if needed and room to move about Determining best seating arrangement (determined by the size of the audience and the activities conducted during training. ) 11

16 Presentation Time Greet participants pre-presentation and establish rapport. Set the tone: formal, informal etc. Start on time. Review the agenda. Ask for and encourage participation. Keep an eye on the clock. Be interactive or save questions for the end. Review learning and summarize. End on time. SHRM

17 Answering Questions: Do s and Don ts Things to remember for answering questions: No one knows everything I don t know is a reasonable answer. Do: Anticipate questions in advance. Listen carefully to what is asked. Ask for clarification if you don t understand. Answer completely. Treat the questioner with respect. Don t: Show that you feel the question is inappropriate. Divert the question to a different point. Put down the questioner. Argue with the questioner. 17
