1 ADDITIONAL MATHEMATICS Is Additional Mathematics suitable for me? DUNMAN SECONDARY SCHOOL SECONDARY 2 STREAMING BRIEFING 15 AUG 2017 MS KOH SWEE KUN (HOD/MATH) Do you aspire to specialise in Mathematics, Science or Engineering disciplines in Polytechnics or Universities that demand a good foundation in Mathematics? Are you very good in Math and have a strong foundation in Algebra? Sec 2 Algebra is an assumed knowledge in A Math. Having a strong foundation in Algebra is very important as it is the basic skill required in A Math! Do you love and enjoy solving Math problems? Do you have a keen interest in Logical Thinking and Arguments? You will need to be able to explain your answers in A Math as required in the syllabus and exams. 1

2 Will offering Additional Mathematics increase my chances to get into JC or Poly? Requirement for Admission to Junior College: A Level Mathematics Additional Mathematics can be considered as one of the L1R5 subjects for admission to Junior Colleges (JC). Additional Mathematics is an assumed knowledge for A-Level H2 Mathematics, however different JCs have different criteria in offering H2 Mathematics. Students without Additional Mathematics usually offers H1 Mathematics in JC Most JCs require students to have Additional Mathematics at O levels to offer A Level H2 Mathematics A-Level H2 Mathematics is a pre-requisite knowledge for A-Level H2 Further Mathematics and H3 Mathematics. Requirement for Admission to Polytechnics Requirement for Admission to Millenia Institute: H2 Math Additional Math is NOT compulsory for all Polytechnic Courses Can be included as one of two Relevant Subjects for ELR2B2 (Need only one Mathematics Subject can be either Elementary Mathematics or Additional Mathematics) 3 Year A-Level Course Offers H1 and H2 Mathematics Check website in Millenia Institute for requirement to offer H2 Math. 3 Mathematics Acquire Math concepts and skills for continuous learning in Math and to support learning in other subjects Develop thinking, reasoning, communication, application and metacognitive skills through a mathematical approach to problem-solving Connect ideas within Math and between Math and other subjects through applications of Math Build confidence and foster interest in Math Course Aims Additional Mathematics Acquire Math concepts and skills for higher studies in Math and to support learning in the other subjects, in particular, the Sciences; Develop thinking, reasoning and metacognitive skills through a mathematical approach to problem-solving Connect ideas within Math and between Math and the Sciences through applications of Math Appreciate the abstract nature and power of Mathematics. Syllabus Organisation Topics covered under each strand A strong foundation and proficiency in algebra is the key to further learning in Math Topics such as Indices and Surds, Binomial Expansions and Partial Fractions lay the foundation for the learning of more advanced Mathematics where algebraic manipulation skills are essential. MP1: Reasoning, Communication and Connection MP2: Application and Modelling MP3: Thinking Skills and Heuristics Algebra Equations & Inequalities Indices & Surds Polynomials & Partial Fractions Binomial Expansions Power, Exponential, Logarithmic, and Modulus Functions Geometry & Trigonometry Trigonometric functions, identities and equations Coordinate Geometry in two dimensions Proofs in Plane Geometry Calculus Differentiation & Integration Learning & Assessment Emphasis Mathematical Reasoning Communication Connections Ability to analyse mathematical situations and construct logical arguments Developed through application of mathematics in different contexts Ability to use mathematical language to express mathematical arguments precisely, concisely and logically Ability to see and make meaningful linkages among mathematical ideas, between mathematics and other subjects, and between mathematics and the real world Questions in examinations requiring students to Prove, Determine with explanations, Explain, Justify and Deduce.
