1 193 Course Description: Technology I In this computer-based course, students will develop keyboarding and word processing skills needed for success in the work place. Students will be introduced to practical word processing applications such as memo and business letter formatting. In addition, students will obtain skill working with databases and spreadsheets. Every high school student is encouraged to take this course before being graduated from high school. In addition, this course provides the opportunity for students to integrate the various components that make up today's most used educational/business related software. Students will learn how to do effective Internet/web-based searches and synthesize this research information as a part of various projectbased performance tasks. MICROSOFT WINDOWS 8 BASIC The student will be able to identify the parts of the Windows 8 desktop, taskbar, and shortcut menus, including navigating task panes and program windows. The student will be able to locate the Charms bar in the top-right corner of the screen and access the options available on the Charms bar such as Settings, Devices, Start, Share, and Search. The student will be able to navigate the Windows 8 environment using the tiles which can be moved, grouped, resized, and personalized. The student will be able to customize the Windows display features and manipulate tiles to create his/her own personal Start screen. The student will be able to use the Help features in Windows 8. The student will be able to create, select, search, copy, and move files. The student will be able to create and delete files/folders in a file hierarchy. 1. Proper identification of Windows 8 items is essential to efficient navigation of the Windows 8 operating system. 2. Knowledge of customizing Windows 8 default settings is essential for effective everyday use. 3. File management enables users to successfully locate, retrieve, and utilize files. 4. Information is spread worldwide within seconds due to technological advancements and has an immediate impact. ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS 1. Where are the essential parts of the Windows 8 desktop located? 2. How do the parts of the Windows 8 desktop assist in navigating Windows?
2 How can defaults be set to personal preferences? 4. How are files organized for easy access? KEYBOARDING SKILLS REVIEW The student will be able to demonstrate proper keying techniques. The student will be able to increase speed and accuracy using the touch technique. The student will be able to operate alphabetic, numeric, and special character keys by the touch system. The student will be able to develop proofreading and editing skills based upon language arts rules. The student will be able to demonstrate the use of proper language art skills for correct sentence structure, verb forms, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling to selected sentences, paragraphs, and business correspondence. The student will be able to use language art skills and proofreading skills to organize and critically evaluate his/her own work, assessing the quality of student performance. 1. Proper technique increases speed and accuracy and prevents repetitive strain injuries. 2. Professional grade documents require the application of proper language arts rules. 3. Professional grade documents require accurate spelling and grammar. ESSENTIALS QUESTIONS 1. How can language arts rules be applied to documents composed at the keyboard? MICROSOFT WORD 2010 The student will be able to identify the parts of the Microsoft Word 2010 program window, ribbon, and dialog boxes. The student will be able to format documents using vertical and horizontal alignment. The student will be able to format and identify parts of a memorandum, and use a template to accurately complete a final product.
3 195 The student will be able to identify parts of personal and business letters, arrange those parts in block format, and apply punctuation to indicate open or mixed styles to produce mailable copies. The student will be able to format multi-page reports with headers, footers, page numbers, and predesigned cover pages. The student will be able to format multi-page reports with reference citations and reference pages utilizing various styles including MLA guidelines. The student will be able to format and customize tables with vertical and horizontal alignments within the table s cells and on the page. The student will be able to compose letters, reports, and essays demonstrating and recognizing formatting, proofreading, and grammar skills in order to produce an accurate, original project. The student will be able to create and enhance documents such as newsletters, flyers, posters, and invitations by adding graphics such as clip art, text boxes, drawings, photographs, and charts and diagrams. 1. Proper identification of Microsoft Word 2010 features is essential to efficiently use the application. 2. Proper formatting of all documents, academic or professional, is important for reading comprehension, clarity, and efficiency. 3. Proper formatting and proofreading/editing of all documents is essential to project a professional image. ESSENTIALS QUESTIONS 1. Where are the essential features of Microsoft Word 2010 located? 2. How are documents formatted for the workplace? 3. How are documents formatted for personal and academic use? 4. How are original documents composed and formatted? CAREER PREPARATION AND PLANNING The student will be able to explore various careers with their job responsibilities, salaries, and training, etc. The student will be able to learn how to search for a job using the Internet and other online sources. The student will be able to compose and format a resume and cover letter in response to a particular job opportunity. 1. Internet websites and other online sources can be used to explore various career options, starting salaries, job locations, and job descriptions.

MICROSOFT EXCEL 2010 The student will be able to identify parts of an Excel spreadsheet and work with dialog boxes, ribbons and taskpanes. The student will be able to demonstrate the ability to edit and format worksheets by inserting, deleting, editing, moving, and formatting cells. The student will be able to demonstrate the ability to construct simple and complex formulas with functions. The student will be able to demonstrate the ability to use functions to solve mathematical, statistical, and financial problems. The student will be able to demonstrate the ability to create and modify a chart to display specific data. The student will be able to demonstrate the ability to integrate Microsoft Word 2010 and Excel Proper identification of Microsoft Excel 2010 features is essential to efficiently use the application. 2. Spreadsheets that are planned out and customized make data easy to input, read, and understand. 3. Mathematical calculations can be performed using formulas and functions in Microsoft Excel 2010 allowing for easy updating of data. 4. Charts can be used to illustrate data used in spreadsheets. The student will be able to create new publications such as flyers, brochures, catalogs, calendars, newsletters, business cards, invitations and certificates from a variety of templates. The student will be able to plan and design a publication by adding building blocks such as coupons, logos, sidebars, borders, pull quotes, and advertisements. The student will be able to create various publications from a template and insert objects such as clip art, tables, text boxes, building blocks, shapes, and pictures. 1. Proper identification of Microsoft Publisher 2010 features is essential to effectively use the application. 2. Proper planning and designing of the publication is important for producing the desired response and reaching the target audience, thereby supporting the goal of the publication. 3. Creating various publications from a template is essential to producing professional-looking publications and results in customizing the templates. ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS 1. How can publications be formatted for personal, academic, and professional use? 2. How can determining the purpose of the publication and gathering information produce the desired response of reaching the target audience? 3. The student will be able to change the design template of existing slides and create and insert new slides into an existing presentation.

The student will be able to use the spell check, thesaurus, and help functions. The student will be able to demonstrate the ability to preview, run, and print a PowerPoint presentation consisting of 8 to 10 slides. The student will be able to edit existing presentations by adding, deleting, and rearranging the order of the slides. The student will be able to change the slide design and color scheme. The student will be able to produce an original slide presentation using PowerPoint with clip art and sound. 1.
