1 THE SUZUKI FANFARE January, 2018 Volume XXX No. 3 Dear Suzuki Students and Families, Achievement days are approaching. The purpose of Achievement Days is to celebrate the dedication and accomplishments of the students, families, and faculty at the Sato Center for Suzuki Studies here at CIM. In addition, it provides an opportunity for the faculty to observe each other s work and to evaluate their collective effectiveness in providing an excellent musical education for all students enrolled. This experience is a unique performance opportunity for all Book Two and above students. Participating students will prepare a program in consultation with his or her private instructor that will include a polished piece, scales, reading (when applicable), and etudes (when applicable) to be performed for the CIM Suzuki faculty. Each participating faculty member will write comments, which will later be shared with the private teacher, parent, and student. Comments from the faculty will include positive aspects as well as helpful suggestions for the performer. Each performer will receive a certificate of participation. All students that are in Book 2 and above will be participating. (Book 1 students will have their regular lesson. Please check with your private teacher to confirm the time.) In order to free the faculty from their schedule to provide this experience, participating students will not have a regular private lesson the week of February The Achievement Days performance will take the place of the private lesson. The Sato Center will be assigning time slots to the students based on their private lesson time, and teachers availability. The schedule will be posted on Saturday, February 10 & 17, outside Room 202. If there are major scheduling problems, please contact Laura Shuster lkshuster1@yahoo.com or Kimberly Meier-Sims. Book 2-3 students are scheduled for 7 minutes, Book 4-8 for 12 minutes and Book 9+ for 15 minutes. Please watch the board for more information. If you are in need of piano accompaniment, please read the Piano Accompaniment section below. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled time. A warm-up room will be available. (See schedule outside room 202 to find your warmup room number.) Also, please read information below on Theory Achievement Day Saturday, February 24. 3 SATO CENTER ACHIEVEMENT DAYS February 20-24, 2018 Theory Achievement Days: On Saturday, February 24 th, theory classes will be assessing your progress for the year with the annual written exams. As these exams are used for placement for the following year, it is very important that you plan to attend. All first and second year students must take their exams during their normal class time, as their teacher will walk them through the exams. This would include the 8:15/8:30 classes, and the 10:15 classes with Conner or Shuster. For their own convenience, 3 rd year and above may do their exams in their regular theory rooms during their normal class time, or any time from 9:00 to 9:45 and 10:15 to 11:45 (please allow at least 45 minutes to complete the exam). Piano Accompaniment In special situations, the teacher may request a pianist to come in and play for a student. This is not a requirement but a suggestion. If the teacher/parent/student is in agreement to this, Adam Whiting has agreed to assist. Since this is not part of CIM tuition, parents will need to pay Adam independently. Fees are due upon completion of the Achievement Day performance. Fees below include one rehearsal and the Achievement performance time (if extra rehearsal time is required, Adam s fee is $50 an hour). Adam can be reached by phone at: or by awhiting@europa.com Achievement Level Achievement Time Cost Beginning/Intermediate 10 minutes $15 Advanced 15 minutes $25 Parent/Student/Teacher is responsible for calling Adam Whiting to set-up a rehearsal time and for communicating Achievement Performance Time. Note: Adam's schedule fills up quickly. The sooner you contact him, the more likely it will be that he will be available for your Achievement time and a convenient rehearsal time.

5 100-Day Practice Club? In order to count practice days, students must listen daily and practice daily. Daily Listening puts students in a holding pattern. Daily Listening and Daily Practice counts towards the 100-days. SAY YES to the 100-Day Practice CHALLENGE! The 100-Day Practice Club requires that students listen to their Suzuki recordings daily, without fail. To get started: CAREFULLY READ THROUGH THE RULES BELOW! Download practice chart by going to - cim.edu/suzuki and clicking on 100-Day Practice Chart. Keep track of your daily practicing and listening by placing a sticker on each day that you practice and listen to your Suzuki CD. Upon completion of the 100 days, hand in the chart to your private teacher. Look for your name in the next Fanfare 100-Day Club Practice Corner. The rules are: 1. Each participant must practice and listen for 100 days in a row. Listening must be part of the practice day! 2. Listening to the Suzuki pieces must occur, EVERY DAY! If practicing is missed for one or more days in a row, but daily listening continues, participants can continue the 100-day practice challenge and not have to start over. On the days that practicing does not occur students will remain in a holding pattern in the 100-day count until daily practice & listening resumes. 3. If the participant does not practice and listen to his or her Suzuki CD for one day, he or she must start back at day one of the 100-day practice challenge. VERY SAD! 4. The idea of this club is to instill strong practice & listening habits. If you don t succeed the first time, try try again. WE ENCOURAGE EVERY STUDENT & TEACHER to become a member of the 100-DAY PRACTICE CLUB! Happy Practicing!

Listen to recordings or watch videos of great performances from our Media Lab collection (downstairs.) Have a group of 2 or more? Ask about our group listening rooms! How Can I Borrow? Sign up for a Library card at the Circulation Desk on behalf of your child. You may borrow 10 items at a time (scores and books.)
