1 Dance Syllabus Mrs.Redman Dance Class Objective: To promote physical activity as a fine art and to help students achieve their fullest potential in the knowledge of creative movement and wellness through education, history, choreography, and performance. Dance Class Structure: Warm up stretching (flexibility exercises), conditioning (strength training exercises, abdominal exercises) Across the floor movement techniques and sequences Center Combinations technical sequential elements Dances building blocks from the center combinations Cool Down stretching Research Units: Ballet, Jazz, Lyrical,Contemporary, Hip Hop and Choreography Dance Course Assessment: The students will be responsible for keeping all handouts and assignments in a 3-ring binder that includes all materials within the semester. This folder will be checked throughout the semester. Assessment will also be performed on written tests, skill tests, papers, and participation. Dance Class Materials Needed: Dance Attire (fitted shirt, pants, capris, shorts, tights) 3-ring binder or folder to hold handouts Pen or Pencil Expectations: You are required to dress out and participate every day. This is an activity class and your full participation is required. You need to come to class attentive, ready to work and with a positive attitude. ***PLEASE NOTE*** Proper placement of your body is important in dance for both the efficient execution of movements and the prevention of injuries. There are times when I, as the instructor, will have to touch/adjust your body in order to show you the proper placement or body alignment. Please be assured that this is done strictly in the context of the dance class with the most professional of intentions. If this is something that you or your parents are not comfortable with, please contact me immediately and I will comply with your request. Dressing Out:
2 Students are required to dress out, unless otherwise told by your instructor. The attire will be o Fitting shirt (meeting dress code requirements) o Pants, capris, tights and shorts ( jeggings/stretchy jeans are not permited) o Dance Shoes or barefoot o Hair Pulled back (at least half up) o No dangly jewelry (stud earrings are OK) ELECTRONIC DEVICES: - Electronic devices may be used for educational purposes only, when approved by me. During the rest of the class period, it should be stored away out of sight. - Electronic devices may not be used on any paper-based assessments, whether they are quizzes, tests or district assessments. Students are responsible for their own devices. Devices must be used only for school related work. No cameras or recordings are permitted and devices should have the camera covered or the device should be used flat on the desk. Absolutely no texting or calling is permitted. Students must show the teacher what they are working on if asked. Devices must be kept silent. Students may not have electronic devices on their body while dancing. No electronic device use will be allowed in the locker rooms. Absolutely no devices may be used during a testing situation again, no exceptions. Violations of policy will result in the device being taken and a referral being written. *Appropriate electronic devices for dance includes ipods/music devices. Health related Excuses: A doctor s note is required for all injuries if sitting out for more than 3 days. Daily Points : 2 points may be earned each day for dressing out and participating. Lack of dressing out will result in a deduction of 1 point. Lack of participating will result in a deduction of 1 point. Students will not earn full daily points for each non-dress, absence, or lack of participation. You may not just dress out and not participate. If your miss class because of a school sponsored field trip/event you are required to complete a make-up assignment to gain your 2 points. Non excused abscences will not be allowed to be made up. Non Dresses: After three non dresses students receive a phone call home. The fourth non dress will result in a referral. Lockers: All lockers must be locked at all times. Do not give your locker combination to anyone. Locker Room, Dance Room: No food or drinks are allowed in these areas, with the exception of bottled water. Students have approximately 6 minutes to dress in and out. Valuable Personal Items: Do not expect your locker to be a safe place to store valuable items. Items left in your locker are your responsibility and you assume all risks. Injuries: Report all injuries to your instructor at the time of the injury. Late Work: If an assignment was due on the day that you were absent, the assignment is due the day that you return. It is your responsibility to get any assignments, papers, or missed work. Tests/quizzes must be made up within one week. Make-up Work: The student is given one day of make-up time for each day missed. All work must be made up by the end of the grading period. Make up work is only accepted for an excused abscence.
3 Grading: Grades will be based on: Skills Test Written Test Participation Homework Midterm/Final Concert Rules: 1. Respect the dance room. a. No street shoes b. No gum c. No Food or Drinks, with the exception of water 2. Respect your classmates, your teacher, and yourself a. No profanity or name calling b. Be on time and prepared c. Respect personal space and property. Be responsible d. Turn work in on time e. Do not distract others from the learning process f. Do not talk while others are talking g. Appropriate use of computer system when utilized h. Appropriate Electronic Use (cell phones, CD players, I-pods, etc) 3. Fully Participate a. Always dress out appropriately Classroom Procedures: 1. Raise hands to ask/answer questions, participate in discussions, etc. 2. Wait to speak until the person speaking is finished and you are called upon 3. Clean up dance room before leaving class: a. Dismissal the bell will not dismiss the class, the instructor will b. Students will have approximately 5-7 minutes to dress in and dress out in the locker room Consequences (depending upon severity): 1. Verbal Warning/ Student teacher conference 2. Verbal Warning/ Parent phone call home/student reflection 3. Referral *If students are excessively disruptive and disturbing the classroom, students can immediately be sent to the office with a referral. Tentative Dates: 1st semester final- December 20th & 21st 2nd semester final- May 22nd & 23rd Spring Concert- April 23rd tech rehearsal after school April 25th Dress rehearsal after school April 6:30 *Please note that this syllabus may be altered or changed by the instructor at any time.
4 Dance Make-Ups Opportunity to Make Up Absences Directions: Choose one of the items listed below and complete the activity. It is your responsibility to complete a make-up assignment and turn it in/perform it for the instructor. You may only do each of the options below once. 2 points will be received for each make-up assignment with a maximum of 20 pts allowed for the semester. 1. Choreograph 6 to 8 eight counts and perform them for the instructor. 2. Design and sketch a costume that you think would be appropriate for a specific song. Chose a song first; then design the costume for that song. You must bring the costume design and the song to receive credit. 3. Create a newspaper publication advertising for our dance concert. 4. See a dance concert and turn in the ticket stub and program. 5. Watch a dance related video and write a one-page summary on the movie. 6. Create a 10-question test for any style of dance. You must provide the answers with your test. 7. Create a nutritional plan that a dancer should follow. 8. Create a work out plan that a dancer should follow. 9. Design a poster about dance (style, choreographer, shoe, etc.) 10. Read a dance related article, and write a one-page summary on the article.
