1 North Charleston High School Fundamentals of Web Page Design &Development I Course Syllabus Dr. Crabtree, Instructor Dear Parents, I am delighted to have your son/daughter in my Web Page Design class this year, and I look forward to getting to know him/her. Our primary goal is to have your son/daughter finish the year successfully. This will require serious commitment on his/her part, and I invite you to join me in supporting your child in this learning experience and in giving him/her as much positive reinforcement as possible. Attached you will find the Web Page Design Course Syllabus for this class. In Web Page Design, students are accountable for maintaining their classroom electronic folder at all times. They will also be required to upload their assignments on SharpSchool. SharpSchool is an excellent tool for student-parent-teacher communication, and will be updated regularly. Please sign the Parent Acknowledgement of the Parent/Guardian (Internet Use) Permission form, indicating that you have reviewed all of the information, and return the complete document. It will be kept in your child s classroom folder for his/her reference. Everyone will continuously be reminded of this information in class. If you have any questions, please ask your son/daughter. 2 FUNDAMENTALS OF WEB PAGE DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT SYLLABUS Course Code 5031 Teacher: Dr. Crabtree Room: D317 Office Hours: 7:45am-3:45pm School Phone: x26396 Semester(s): 1 st Meeting Days: TBA Planning Period: 2 nd Shanteisha_Crabtree@charleston.k12.sc.us COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is designed to provide the student with the knowledge and skills needed to design Web pages. Students will develop skills in designing and implementing, a Web site using authoring tools. Webmaster technology focuses on the major design considerations for a well-balanced web site construction including the planning cycle, web technologies, usability, site structure, and navigation styles. Emphasis is placed on project based learning experiences to understand design issues. NOTE: Web pages created by students in this course are not to be published without following district guidelines. Prerequisite: Keyboarding 5100 (or Keyboarding Proficiency Test) and Computer Applications or Integrated Business Applications Recommended prerequisites: Multimedia or Digital Input Technologies Carnegie Unit Credit: 1 Grade Level: INSTRUCTIONAL PHILOSOPHY Students will be given challenging real-world projects and assignments typical of the Webmaster field of study. Structured practice and individualized instruction will be provided to students. Students will demonstrate cooperative skills including teamwork, leadership, and self-management in the completion of projects. High quality work is expected and students will be given the opportunity to redo work until it meets standards specified during instruction. Classroom activities will include: reading, research projects, and problem solving. Troubleshooting, problem-solving, research, and creative exploration will be an integral component of the course. Assessment methods will include written exams, real-world project evaluations, and written/oral presentations. 2

3 COURSE GOALS: 1. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of ethical and legal standards for web design. 2. Use web page design principles to plan, create, edit, and maintain web sites. 3. Create, edit, and maintain basic web sites using HTML. 4. Customize a page template using CSS. 5. Design a web site using Dreamweaver. 6. Read, understand, and communicate in the language of the web page design field. 7. Student will demonstrate mathematical reasoning and numeracy skills, mathematic procedures, and an understanding of major mathematics concepts that underlie web page design field. PORTFOLIO The student will be able to integrate the appropriate text, graphics and printed documents produced in this course, into a finished product. ASSESSMENT AND GRADING: Projects and Tests 50% Mini projects and quizzes 30% Class work/homework/production (Writing) 10% Performance evaluation/class participation 10% Students will be evaluated using the standard grading scale for Charleston County School District. They will be evaluated based on projects and test, mini projects and quizzes, class work, and performance evaluation and class participation. The following is the standard grading scale. A % Exceeds expectation B 85-92% Meets business standards and expectations C 77-84% Meets basic standards and expectations D 70-76% Passing grade but does not meet some standards F 0-69% Failing, does not meet minimum standards ASSIGNMENTS AND PROJECTS Advertisement Projects Newsletters Business Forms Presentations Integration Projects MAJOR PROJECTS AND ASSIGNMENTS: Projects Tests Students will create web sites for use in business, industry, government, and education. All work will be collected in a student portfolio on which students will regularly be asked to reflect on the quality of their work. Objective tests based on the state required assessment items. 3

4 Mini projects and quizzes Class work Performance evaluation and class participation Students will complete guided practice tutorials weekly. Quizzes are given weekly over the course content. Students will complete in-class assignments daily. To encourage reflection on learning, students will complete journals (electronically and written) frequently. Demonstrate employability skills as outlined in the state standards. Participate in class discussion and activities. Students demonstrate appropriate use of technology as outlined in the acceptable use policy of the district. Recommended Readings: Students will read materials given by the teacher as well as current articles in magazines and other media. Extra Help Opportunities: I will be available after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students must arrive by 3:25p.m. for instruction. This time can be used to make-up work missed work, catch up if you fall behind and study for tests. Students must place their names on the sign-in sheet for tutoring. A student must always submit work that represents his or her own work. Academic dishonesty would involve having someone else complete the assignment or copying the work of another student. Grading Policy: Note: The SC Uniform Grading Scale will be used. A student must make a grade of 70 for minimum competency. Rules for Internet Use: 1. Rules for Internet Use must have signed parental permission. 2. Ask permission from teacher before using the Internet. 3. Use the Internet for legitimate education purposes only. 4. Do not attempt to: a. Access news groups or news group or archives. b. Send or receive unless it is an assigned classroom activity. c. Register your name, home address, telephone number, or other personal information at any location on the Internet. d. Use the Telnet, Internet Relay Chat, or Trumpet Newsreader programs. 5. Obtain pre-approval of the teacher before you: a. Insert a Flash drive or CD into the hard drive. b. Download or save files to the computer hard drive or the data disk drive. c. Print information from the Internet. 5

6 NOTE: Any student that changes the screensaver, desktop, or downloads internet activity onto the hard drive will receive an automatic referral.
