Experience in National University of Singapore Study Program: International Business Administration Exchange semester: Fall Academic year: Host University: National University of Singapore Country: Singapore 1. General Information about the School NUS is located in Kent ridge, south west part of Singapore. Once you arrive in Singapore, you can take the subway directly from Changi airport MRT station to Kent Ridge and then take the NUS intercampus shuttle bus to your accommodation free of charge if you are allocated accommodations within the campus. Public transportation is pretty convenient and basically you can go from one place to another by bus, subway or book a taxi or a cab on mobile app such as Uber in a fair price. English is the official language in Singapore although you may need some time to adapt to unique Singaporean pronunciation and their language habits, called Singlish. Daily life in NUS is quite different with Tilburg. Normally, most students live within campus. One the one hand, housing fees are much cheaper, on the other hand it s easier to get in touch with other students not only for group meetings but for university community activities. Last year during my exchange program, I lived in Temasek Hall, which is close to business school, NUS biz, where I had most of my seminars and tutorials. Four of my courses are consist of three-hour session training, and all of these classes are in small classrooms in biz building. So its also easy to memorize these locations if you choose business courses. Moreover, you have to be prepared to have much more workload compared with Tilburg university, and biz library is always the best place to study, print staff and borrow text books. Biz canteen is also a good place for lunch, dinner, you can try a lot of Asian foods and buy a cup of kopi in a cheap price. There are always special dishes in individual canteen in each campus. For courses offered by biz, generally, these are most popular modules even for students from other learning fields. And there are many outside business exchange students from all over the world. Therefore, it s a great opportunity to know more excellent students and do group works with them, sometimes learn from competitions if you are aggressive for university campaigns since there are too many activities relevant or irrelevant for career such as corporation recruitments. In each presentation, business casuals are required all the time and it s better to bring one set of suits although it s hot all year round in Singapore. All in all, Singapore is a diverse country, you will never feel lonely if you are interested in exploring new things especially foods from all over the world even if you are simply in NUS. 2. Practical information Information before you left I have received pre-departure information around the start of June. Since I m from an entryvisa required country, I have to fill in several extra steps on the immigration website and pay for the visa application and processing fees other than filling in normal personal information. If you are from a country belongs to those countries, you have to do exact the same procedures as what I did in last year. If not, you may only have to fill in your personal information and wait for further responses. Any difficulties?
For me, every step was going well during my exchange program and I took the flight to Singapore with one of my friends who also went for her exchange program. If you can find someone who are going to Singapore for exchange or study programs you can also contact with each other and then you won t be lonely during your trip. Visa procedure and arrival How long did it take you to arrange your (student) visa (if relevant)? As I mentioned in the previous section, I have received pre-departure from university immigration office at the beginning of June. I m simply required to follow the instruction in the to arrange visa application and other miscellaneous activities. So just following the instructions and doing step by step is fine How much did you pay for the visa (if relevant)? Last year, the visa fee is SG$60 and processing fee is SG$30 After Arrival It depends on which accommodation building. For me I didn t attend the freshman orientation week organized by Temasek hall since I was going to exchange but not formal freshman. Once I arrived in Temasek hall I went to the hall office and then registered to get my key. That was the start of my life in Temasek hall. Was the administration and faculty well prepared for your arrival? NUS s administration fair for exchange students last year was well prepared. They sent the to tell you the exact date, time, location, activity agenda. All the relevant information was quite clear and easy to follow. If you get some questions, they also respond pretty fast. Also for information guide in biz is well prepared, before those guides, a mentor, who is senior student will contact you through in advance. What problems, if any did you encounter? For me, I followed each step by instructions and NUS suggestions, so no serious problem occurred. Orientation/Introduction activities The orientation was well organized and all the relevant information was provided during the orientation. Therefore, never miss the orientation activities Several NUS students were responsible for guiding and mentoring. They were quite nice and easy to get contact. Did you have a student mentor/buddy? Yes, six to eight students per group would be provided a mentor Housing How was accommodation organized? I lived in Temasek hall, which is one of the oddest halls within the campus. There are a lot of interhall activities organized by students. You will have a lot of opportunities to attend these activities although for exchange students these activities are not compulsory. Did you have to book your accommodation in advance or did you have to search for a place to live after you arrived? I read the house information attached by the pre-departure and filled in my three preferences, but finally I was allocated in Temasek hall which was not in my preference list. Though, life in Temasek hall was also awesome. What kind of housing does the university provide?
Normally three kinds of houses. One is called hall, which is more community life, and each hall has own special culture. But rooms in hall are not equipped with air conditioner. The other two are PGPR and Utown. You can choose different room types in these two accommodation area. What support did you receive from the school in locating housing? I did not receive any support since no serious problems about housing occurred. But if you are not satisfied with room type allocated, you can also have a try to apply a new one only if it is justified. Were you satisfied with your accommodation? Yes. Though the accommodation type was not first in my preference list, I enjoyed the community activity organized by my hall and also met local friends. Any special issues or good ideas/useful websites for prospective students? The web link attached in the general is useful. Normally, NUS will arrange exchange students first, no need concern too much about housing issues. Living Costs How did you finance your exchange period, apart from the grant you received from Tilburg University? I got all the necessary fees from my parents What were your living expenses abroad like compared to Tilburg? For me is indifferent, mostly depend on your lifestyle. What did you spend most of your money on? Accommodation What would you advice future students to spend their money on? Also depend on your lifestyle. Remember one thing: alcohol is extremely expensive in singapore Please outline your approximate monthly budget whilst on exchange: Housing :350 euro Food :300 euro Transport :100 euro Books: none Miscellaneous :depends Academic Calendar Arrival date & introductory week 27 th July First day of the semester? 7 th August Last day of classes? 10 th November Mid-term break? From mid of September Examination period? From November Any special events? Can t remember
The International Office Does the host university have an International Office? Yes Who is responsible for incoming exchange students? Exchange program office How does the International Office function? Quite similar like study abroad office in Tilburg University Are you satisfied with the information provided to you by the International Office? Almost satisfied Exchange promotion What kind of activity did you take part in to promote exchange to Tilburg University at your exchange university? Exchange ambassador training session Social Activities Which social activities are organized by the university/students for exchange students? A lot of activities. Is there a student organization for international student? Can t remember Did you have contact with local students? Yes, since I lived in hall so I met local students every day and they provided me a lot help. But before arrival, I know none of local student. Did you have contact with other exchange students? Yes, I have a friend who studying in Melbourne University also came to NUS for exchange. Did you travel to other places/countries during your exchange? Yes, Malaysia, Indonesia and Sri Lanka Culture and Language I didn t experience too much shock in Singapore perhaps because Singaporean culture is quite similar to culture of my home country. However, Singaporean culture is mixed with southeast culture which is unique compared with my home town, Hangzhou. Honestly speaking, Singaporeans are productive, hard working. You will experience this atmosphere especially studying in NUS. Some ongoing exchange students whose first language is not English may experience the language problem. And it s quite normal you can understand some words or can t figure out some pronunciation once you arrive. However, NUS students English are pretty good in both academic and daily communication. Personal Development This exchange of experiences taught me how to communicate better with people from different countries. From a Long-term perspective, it is beneficial to my communication ability and culture reading capabilities. While recognizing more people from different countries, and their relationship in the future may be beneficial to me as well. Perhaps due to the competitive social environment in Singapore, NUS students I met have clear goals of their future planning. They are very clear about what they are interested in, what they want to learn. Of course, they work very hard for these goals and strictly enforce their plans to fulfill themselves. After this exchange experience, I also began to think about things other than study. For example, how to
effectively balance work and interest, how to save time on the basis of goal completion. My best experience was doing group work with local students in one of my modules and we won the best team. The worst experience should be the period when I arrived in Singapore and I felt uncomfortable with the hot climate. 3. Academic information Academic level at a host university All courses are given in English. Five modules I took were Financial Markets, Investment and Portfolio Management, Options and Futures, Supply Chain Management and Asian Business Environment. Three of these are finance course since I want to continue to get a finance master and SCM is quite interesting, two lecturers gave two distinct methods and I have learnt a lot from this course. Asian business environment is advanced macroeconomics with other theories related with Asian emerging market. I would like recommend finance courses even if they are all heavy and much more workload compared with modules in other department. You will learn a lot of practical tools as well. For the academic level, I would like to say it is much higher and much more strict compared with Tilburg university in terms of both language and depths of theories. From my modules, professors teaching styles are mostly more theoretical, but I also learnt practical tools myself in order to complete assignments, for example VBA. And these modules are taught by a mix of case studies, group work, seminars, lectures and tutorials. The relationship between students and teaching staff is indifferent with that in Tilburg university as well. Professors and tutors are pretty nice. In general, I m almost satisfied with my academic achievements. Exams What types of exams did you have to sit? Some modules have formal final exams, and these exams will be in large lecture rooms. Others are mostly determined my professors. Other Can students easily access the library and its resources? Library is quite easy to access. Some resources can only be read within the library while some resources can be borrowed in limited time period. Were there public computers available on campus/in university buildings? Not many public computers on campus since most students use their own laptops. But early bird can always find a seat in Mac room with a Mac computer in Utown! 6 Tips for future students: If you want to experience high quality academic courses and do group work with excellent students. NUS is definitely one of best choices. The most important thing is making yourself prepared for heavy workload and read syllabuses of modules then decide which courses you can take. Last but not least, work hard and play hard as well! A picture is worth a thousand words NA Contact details: Can the International Office share your address with prospective exchange students, so that other students can contact you for more information? Yes
