Although it has been a short week, it has been illed with excitement and energy! Our students never disappoint us! Today, our juniors completed the pre-administration for the PSAT this coming Wednesday. Each student was also given a practice book that they can use to prepare for the PSAT. I have given each of them a charge to do their very best on the PSAT. This will increase their chances of eligibility in the National Merit Scholarship program (to learn more, use this link: h p:// onalmerit.org/s/1758/ interior.aspx?sid=1758&gid=2&pgid=424). Please ensure we have a permission slip (or an from the account of a parent) to guarantee that each of our juniors may travel to take the PSAT. Students must arrive at Harper by 6:45 am. The building will be open by 6:30 am. Students may enter through the doors nearest our classrooms and report to the appropriate room. Priority registration for the CPCC Spring semester begins on November 4 th. In preparation for that date, we will hold advising sessions October 21 st through October 31 st to help students identify their required courses and build their schedules for the next semester. The purpose of the HOSA organization nationally is to develop leadership and technical HOSA skill competencies through a program of motivation, awareness and recognition, which is an integral part of the Health Science Education instructional program. 2 Harper Dedication & Ribbon Cutting Student Speaker Wanted! On October 26, 2016, we will celebrate the opening of Harper Middle College High School! This special occasion will include remarks from Mary T. McCray, Chairperson of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education, Ann Clark, Superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Dr. Kelly Trainor, Dean of the Central Piedmont Community College Harper Campus, our Principal, Dr. Brandy Nelson, and a Harper student! We will celebrate the start of a long legacy at Harper and invite you to join us in this celebration. This will include a small reception after the event! We are looking for a dynamic student speaker for the event. This student speaker will give the closing remarks for our dedication. Any student that is interested in serving as a student speaker for the dedication should follow the directions below. The timeline is short so make sure you follow all deadlines! I want to give the Dedication Speech...what do I do? Round 1: Apply! You will submit your written speech to Dr. Nelson. All speeches are due to Dr. Nelson by midnight, EST, on Thursday, October 20, 2016 via (brandyr.nelson@cms.k12.nc.us). You can submit it as an attachment or write it directly into an . Your speech should be less than 3 minutes. Round 2: Practice your speech in front of judges. You will then audition your speech on Monday, October 24th at a designated time convenient to you and your practice audience. The Dedication Speaker will be noti ied via by midnight on Monday, October 24th. Please see Dr. Nelson or Ms. Forges for more questions! Good Luck! Military-Connected Students In an effort to ensure that the unique needs of military-connected students are met, Session Law requires the North Carolina State Board of Education/North Carolina Department of Public Instruction to collect information on militaryconnected students. The goal is to help accommodate these students by providing them with support and consistency when their parents are deployed, when they are transitioning between schools, and at other pivotal times during their academic career. To help the district get the information needed, there is a form that needs to be illed out by you and/or your parent. Please retrieve this form out of your mailbox, have it completed, and then turn it into the main of ice by October 31st.

3 PSAT Information & Schedule (October 19th) Attached to the Weekly Newsletter parents will ind the permission slip for the PSAT that will take place on October 19. Your student will be transported to a secure testing site where they will be administered the PSAT and then returned back to school. The PSAT will be administered to ALL Junior students. PARENTS There are TWO signatures required on the permission slip. Signature 1 give consent for CMS to transport your child to the testing location Signature 2 gives consent for your child to be excused for the rest of the day AFTER we return from testing. PARENTS You have two options for returning this permission slip. Option 1 Print the attached document, sign it and then send it back to the school with your student where they will return it to the main of ice, or Option 2 SEND AN with your student s name and your consent for your child to be transported to the testing site. (Example, I, John Doe, give permission for my child, John Doe Jr., to be transported to the PSAT site and to be excused for the rest of the day.) STUDENTS If you parent gives you the permission slip to turn in, it is your responsibility to make sure you have turned it into the main of ice. It is also your responsibility to bring your CPCC photo ID with you to the testing site. You will be assigned a testing site the morning of the PSAT. ***Please note Since we are using and off-site location to administer the PSAT, it is not an option for you to drop your student off at the site OR for your student to drive to the site. The only admission to the testing site is through the CMS transportation provided. Students will report to room 352D and 353 based upon testing location Students will complete the following. Turn in cell phones in their pre-labeled envelopes Students will put on their HMCHS sticker and name badge Student will be checked for CPCC photo identi ication Students will load the bus Buses will depart for testing locations (Myers Park HS and Phillip O Berry HS) Students will arrive at testing locations and walk to their assigned testing room Students will take the PSAT Students will depart from testing location for HMCHS Students will arrive back to HMCHS Student will report to room 352D and 353 to receive their cell phones and lunch will be served Students report to 3 rd block *** We will assign you a testing location and notify you on the day of testing *** CPCC-Harper Library Book Sale: October If you have books that you no longer need, save yourself a trip to Goodwill and donate them to the Harper Campus Library book sale! We will also accept DVDs and CDs. Please bring your donated items to the Harper Campus Library by Tuesday, October 18. Then, come check out the book sale from October All hardcovers, DVDs and CDs will be $1 and paperbacks will be $0.50. All proceeds from the sale will go to the CPCC Library s Theresa Thompson Scholarship fund. Senior Project Presentation Day New Date: Thursday, November 17, 2016 Alert to all students in English IV this semester!!! Your Senior Project Presentation Day has moved. The date was originally, November 4, 2016 but we have moved it to November 17, This will allow more time for our students to develop stronger projects and engage with our community in a more strategic and impactful way! VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: We are looking for volunteers to serve on Project Presentation Day panels on November 17th. If you are interested, please reach out to Mr. Cohens in our main of ice! Thank you for your support! CPCC Harper Summit: Take Time. Enjoy the Climb October 20, 2016 from 10:30 am 1:30 pm CPCC Harper will sponsor a Harper Summit! Students will have the opportunity to explore skilled trades such as construction management, welding technology, graphic arts and non-destructive examination. Students and visitors may also meet industry representatives and participate in several career workshops! Workshops include: Underwater Welding, Winning Interviews and Mock Interviews. Lunch is provided for registered students! If a HMCHS student is interested in the Harper Summit, please sign-up in the main of ice. There is a sign-up sheet posted on the wall opposite Mr. Cohens desk. You may also Mr. Cohens if you are unable to visit the campus to physically signup. All students should sign-up by Tuesday, October 18, at 5:00 pm! This will ensure that a lunch will be ordered for you. Free ACT and SAT Practice! Free SAT & ACT Prep ACT and SAT test preparation is now available for FREE through Edgenuity. Edgenuity offers an online tutorial that allows students to develop customized course work to improve their ACT or SAT scores. The program includes diagnostic tests, video lectures, assignments, quizzes and post-tests. The subjects covered in these tutorials are Reading, English with Writing, Math and Science. Students can work individually on any subject and at their own pace. To login and complete the Orientation Module now, use the information provided below. 5 Join the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Youth Council! High school students are invited to join the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Youth Council The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Youth Council is the student advisory council for the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. The council, a program of Charlotte's GenerationNation, helps local teens to take an active role in learning how to solve challenges impacting Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. Student leaders meet regularly with local of icials and community leaders, learn about community issues and different points of view, build leadership, and more. Students meet 1-2 times a month to: Advise policy- and decision-makers on issues impacting youth and children Learn about local government, the key issues (and different points of view), and how our community works Build knowledge and experience for leadership, college, career and civic life Highlight civic issues of importance to youth Become part of a communitywide network of emerging leaders - Charlotte-Mecklenburg's new generation of leaders Dinner and transit passes are provided.
