Students are required to contact the instructor prior to the any absence in order to determine how the student will make up any missed assignments. Course Description: MATH 8B Students will learn 8th grade math topics outlined in this course drawing from a variety of ources, including hands on activities, interactive lessons, and practical math applications. (Students do not earn credit toward Graduation Requirements until 9 th grade) COURSE CONTENT: Use number sense to problem solve. Compute using rational & irrational numbers, and order of operations. Measure and estimate using basic formulas, measurements, distance, rate, perimeter, area, volume, weight, mass and angles. Use mathematical reasoning to make conjectures and test them through counterexamples. Use if...then statements to construct simple, valid arguments. Perform mathematical problem solving. Analyze and display data Present & analyze results of an experiment. Make valid inferences, predictions and arguments based on probability. Discover algebraic patterns and model algebraic concepts. Construct and use geometric figures. Materials (may include but are not limited to) District approved Aventa Curriculum Internet Sites, Lab experiences, Computer based learning models, Reading materials, Videos Science Materials: 10 objects of the same type (apples, tennis balls, etc), Balance, digital scale, or Kitchen scale, 20 units/pieces of the same small object, like 20 marbles, Metric ruler that measures in millimeters, Flashlight, 2 glass jars or beakers that will hold at least 100mL of water, A 50-mL graduated cylinder or measuring cup with ml indicated on it, A stopwatch or clock to watch for recording time, Balloon Assessment (may include but not limited to) Oral/Written expression for mastery understanding of course concepts and demonstration of the application of course concepts. Performance based evaluations through labs and projects. Progress reports will be done monthly by the instructor. Progress BOA has individual instructors and Academic Advisors that will review overall academic progress to determine if the student is achieving the specific learning goals and performance objectives specified in the written student learning plan to deem SATISFACTORY. Student progress is evaluated weekly by individual instructors. Student monthly overall progress is evaluated by Academic Advisors. The following is some of the criteria that will be used to determine adequate progress: grades, attendance, pacing of the course and academic/attendance effort. In addition to the course schedule, these benchmarks may also come in the form of lesson, unit, assignment and/or assessment completion dates. These established progress benchmarks will allow teachers and students to assess the students educational progress in meeting the course learning standards. At a minimum, students must turn in at least one assignment per week to maintain a status of making monthly progress, but will need to complete all the instructor is asking for each week in order to complete the course on time. NOTE: If a student enters after the first day of semester one or two, it is the student s responsibility to make up any and all assignments to catch up with the course pacing guide. A zero will reflect on the progress for individual course assignments until completed satisfactorily. Grading Scale: (Progress reports will be done monthly) A (90-100%) Student demonstrates exemplary abilities through scores earned; student showed outstanding mastery of expected skills. B (80-89%) Student demonstrates adequate abilities through scores learned on assessments; student shows adequate mastery of expected skills. C (67-79%) Student demonstrates average abilities through scores earned; students showed average mastery of expected skills. F (66% or below) Student unable to demonstrate mastery of expected skills. Relationships to other Content Areas Completion of this course will encourage the student to integrate: mathematical, logical linguistic, social, historical, societal, technological, and writing skills.
