2 PREFACE The Academic Decathlon (AD) is a team competition in academics for high school students in grades nine through twelve. Academic Decathletes compete in teams of six to nine students. AD involves students of all levels of academic achievement; to ensure that the program is inclusive of students of varying ability levels, AD requires that each team include at least two A, or honor students; two B, or scholastic students; and two C and below, or varsity students. GEERAL ISTRUCTIOS FOR PROCTORS 1. Review packet and participate in the assigned volunteer orientation. 2. Following the orientation, report to the testing arena no later than the time listed in the program. Earlier the better! Check to see that your section is ready for testing. 3. As decathletes enter the testing arena, verify that each decathlete has their proper identification. a. o material except the appropriate test booklet, pencil, and Clicker (XT Device) are allowed at the decathletes testing area. b. Calculators may be used during the math test. (Refer to the calculator policy for more details.) 4. Decathletes must sit in their designated seating assignment unless informed by the AD staff. 5. Once all the decathletes are sitting, verify that each decathlete is accounted for. Decathletes not present must be immediately reported to the Test Center. 6. Referring to the times shown in the Program, distribute tests to decathletes. It is important to time each test accurately. Each test is exactly 30 minutes in length. 7. It is extremely important to stay on schedule. 8. While decathletes are taking their tests, please keep your eyes on them. Regularly walk your section to make sure that proper test taking is occurring. Look to make sure that decathletes are completing Scantron appropriately. [IT IS IMPORTAT TO DO THIS FOR EACH TEST] 1. During testing, Proctors will regularly walk their section to make sure that proper test taking is occurring. In the event a decathlete is guilty of severe infraction of good test taking behavior, a proctor will take the test booklet from the student and notify the Test Center immediately. 2. DO OT open your test booklets until told to do so by the Lead Proctor. 3 P age

Decathletes, before each test you will need to enter an testing login process on your XT clicker that includes: 1 Waking up the device 2 Entering your decathlon ID 3 Confirming our ame 4 Confirming the Test Subject 4. On each test booklet you will find a "Certification Statement." ou are to print your name and four digit I.D. number on the designated line and then sign and date the statement. 5. READ all of the printed directions in your test booklet. Read each question and the accompanying alphabetized possible answers before entering your answer in the XT Clicker. When you have decided which answer is correct, enter the corresponding letter into the keypad of the XT Clicker. Do not enter any answers on the Subject Checksheet. If you change your mind, simply enter the correct letter. ou may skip or go back to a previous question by using the arrow key on your device. ou will receive no credit for unanswered questions. 6. ou will have 30 minutes for each test today. If you finish early, recheck your answers, then end the test by selecting the right function button below where you see OK to End Test. Then close your booklet and wait quietly. Do not leave your seat. 7. Use your test booklet for scratch paper when needed. 8. Scoring is based on the number of correct answers. There is no penalty for guessing. 9. Before beginning each test, check through your test booklet to be sure the pages are in the correct order (1, 2, 3, etc.) and that there are 50 items to complete. EXCEPTIOS: Math has only 35 questions. 10. Directions will not be repeated after a test has begun. A proctor may answer questions individually and quietly. 11. Raise your hand if you need assistance from a Proctor. 12. Decathletes are not allowed to leave the testing arena except at scheduled breaks and in case of an emergency. ou will not be allowed back into the testing area until the scheduled test. Decathletes will not be able to complete a test if they have to leave during a scheduled test. AT THE COCLUSIO OF EACH TESTIG PERIOD 1. Once time is called you must have your test booklet closed with the front cover facing up. 2. The Proctors will: a. Collect the test booklets in numeric order and place them in a designated envelope. b. Check for Completed "Certification Statement" on test booklets as they collect them. 3. Are there any questions? 4 6. Do ACADEMIC DECATHLO 5 MIUTE WARIG 1. A 5 minute warning will be announced to decathletes to let them know how much time remains until the end of the test. 2. At the 5 minute warning, the next test will be distributed in preparation for the next start of testing. ote: this will only occur if another exam is scheduled in the program. AT THE COCLUSIO OF EACH TESTIG PERIOD 1. Collect all old test booklets and immediately prepare for the next test. The new test booklets are not to be opened until instructed by the Lead Proctor. 2. Report decathletes that did not take the test or left early to the Lead Proctor. 3. Before Lunch and at the end of the day, return all testing materials and Arena Section Box to the front of the Arena where staff will be waiting. AT THE ED OF THE DA 1. Return your name badge, packet, Arena Box and any other material to the front of the Arena where staff will be waiting to check you out. 2. Turn in the evaluation sheet. We appreciate receiving your comments or any additional suggestions or techniques that will improve the effectiveness of the academic decathlon. ADDITIOAL POITS 1. Music Test. The first 12 questions are listening questions. 2. Adequate supplies of umber #2 pencils with erasers are available in your Homeroom Supply Box. Decathletes must hold up broken pencils, so that they can be exchanged by a proctor. 3. Watches on testing table are allowed so long as they make no noise. Besides watches (& calculators for Math, only), all other electronic devices are not allowed (including cellular phones, music devises, etc.). 4. Decathletes are not allowed to bring food and drinks into the testing room. 5. In the event a decathlete is guilty of severe infractions of good test taking behavior, the proctor will note the decathlete s name and identification number and brief description of infraction. Immediately deliver the information to the Lead Proctor to inform the Competition Director of the infraction who will then determine the severity of the penalty, if any. not allow decathletes to leave the room except at scheduled breaks and in case of emergency. Decathletes will not be allowed back into the arena room until the next scheduled test if s/he needs to leave during an exam. Report dismissals to the Lead Proctor immediately. 5 P age

6 CALIFORIA ACADEMIC DECATHLO CALCULATOR POLIC FOR CURRICULUM EAR This policy applies for all competitions held in California. I. Competitors May Use Calculators for the Mathematics Test If competitors wish to use calculators on the Mathematics Test, they are responsible for bringing them to the test. Calculators will not be provided for decathletes who do not bring their own. Calculator use is permitted only for Mathematics; competitors will not be allowed to use calculators on any other test. CAD no longer requires decathletes to clear the memory of their graphing calculators. Teams will be required to submit a roster that lists the student and the type of calculator, including all back ups, s/he will be using in competition. II. Permissible Calculators If a competitor wishes to use a calculator, it can be a basic, four function, scientific, or graphing calculator, provided it has none of the features listed in Section III (Prohibited Calculators). III. Prohibited Calculators Calculators with any of the following features are OT allowed in AD competitions: pocket organizers hand held or laptop computers electronic writing pads or pen input devices models with an alphabetic (QWERT) keypad, e.g. TI 92 or HP 95 models with paper tape models that make noise models that can engage in wireless communication (transfer data or information with other calculators) models that require a power cord models with CAS (computer algebra systems), e.g. TI 89 OTE: USAD has approved the TI spire calculator so long as it does not have the (CAS) stamped on the back side of the machine. Because companies are continuously introducing new products, it would be impossible for AD to maintain an up to date list of specific model numbers that possess these features. If a competitor is uncertain whether a particular calculator will be allowed, the student should bring a backup that does not possess any of the features in question. o backup calculator will be provided for any competitor whose calculator is disallowed. IV. Competing without a Calculator Competitors may opt to take the Mathematics Test without a calculator; however, AD is suggesting competitors use a basic, scientific, or graphing calculator for solving the trigonometry test items. V. Calculator Failure During a Test If a competitor s calculator stops working during a test, the student should continue taking the test without a calculator. o additional calculator will be provided, and the competitor will not be allowed to take the test again later. However, as noted in Section III above, a competitor may bring a backup calculator and/or spare batteries to the test. Last Revised on P age
