1 PSYC 110: INTRODUCTORY PSYCHOLOGY Cincinnati Christian University Department of Behavioral Sciences Spring Credit Hours Online Course Updated Instructor: April Lamoreaux, MA, LPCC april.lamoreaux@ccuniversity.edu Phone: COURSE DESCRIPTION An introduction to the scientific study of human behavior including processes of physiology, cognition and affect, consciousness, social relationships, and psychopathology COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: 1. Describe and discuss the history of psychology including current trends in the field. 2. Understand the scientific research process, the way psychology is studied, and research ethics. 3. Summarize an understanding of neuroscience and the relationship between the nervous system and behavior. 4. Demonstrate knowledge of basic psychological concepts: Sensation, perception, memory, learning, emotion, motivation, language, thought, intelligence, development, personality, relationships, stress, and psychological disorders. METHOD OF INSTRUCTION To successfully complete this course, students will need access to the Internet. It is imperative that students maintain pace with the class. This is an online course, and it is designed as a learning environment wherein all members of the class move through the material as a group. Discussions, quizzes, assignments, and readings are designed around the Course Schedule. Fifteen (15) lessons are presented. Work for each unit must be completed in accordance with the Course Schedule. REQUIRED MATERIALS Canvas and All students enrolled in this course are required to check Canvas and their weekly for the duration of the course. Course announcements, changes to the syllabus, and memos from the instructor will be distributed via Canvas and/or . Students are responsible for all information distributed in this manner. While it is not mandatory to the course that you utilize these resources, these materials will improve your understanding of course topics and subsequently increase your scores on weekly quizzes and midterm/final exams. Please check Canvas each week regarding supplemental materials available. Participation/Attendance: Students will earn the participation grade by checking Canvas weekly for new lessons/weekly course information. Five times over the course of the semester, the student will be asked to engage in a discussion or complete a participation activity. Students will be counted present if they have logged in at least once over the course of the week and completed any participation tasks. Participation is worth a total 50 points (10% of final grade). Reading Quizzes/Activities: To ensure mastery and comprehension of material, there will be a quiz posted on canvas each week covering the material for that week s topic. The quizzes are five (5) questions in length. All questions are multiple-choice or true/false. Each Reading Quiz will be available online (on Canvas) for one week only. The instructor must approve exceptions due to documented personal medical emergency or a documented family emergency. Quizzes are open-book/open-note. Once students open the quiz, they will have ten (10) minutes to complete the quiz. The quizzes are set up so that each student will have two (3) attempts; Canvas automatically accepts the best score. All attempts must be completed within the allotted one-week time period. The quizzes are worth 8 points each, 100 points total (20% of final grade). The two lowest quiz scores of the course of the semester will be dropped. Presentation: Students will provided with a list of psychology topics. Students will choose one topic to research. Students will upload a power point presentation or video presentation (approximately 5 minutes long) summarizing the student s research findings. The student should include a minimum of two (2) professional, peer-reviewed references. Presentation is worth a total of 75 points (15% of final grade). Myers-Briggs Type Inventory (MBTI) and Response: Students are required to complete the MBTI. The student will be provided with the results of the MBTI. The student will write a 250-word response detailing insights about himself/herself including personality strengths and growth areas. If a student has completed the MBTI within the past calendar year, then those results may be used. MBTI is worth 75 points (15% of final grade).

3 PSYC 110 (Hartkopf), p. 3 Midterm and Final Exams: Students will be given a midterm and a final exam on the last day of class. The midterm exam will cover weeks 1-7. The final exam will cover weeks Both exams will be posted on Canvas. Each Exam is worth 100 points (200 points total, 40% of final grade) IMPORTANT NOTES Attendance and Participation: Students are required to complete all readings, activities, actively engage in discussion board posts, and submit assignments on time (see due dates on Course Schedule). All papers and major projects must be submitted electronically via Canvas. All assignments are due by midnight at the end of the course week (Sunday evening), as noted in Canvas and on the Course Schedule. Late Assignments: Out of respect for the hard work that everyone puts into the course, late assignments will NOT be accepted unless there is a serious personal medical or family emergency (e.g., hospitalization, death in the family) that can be substantiated with documentation. In the rare event that a late assignment is accepted, there will be a deduction of one letter grade each day it is late. It is understood that unexpected life events occur, but this policy is to encourage the development of positive professional behavior. Therefore, please plan accordingly to complete assignments on time as regular life stressors or technology problems will not be accepted as reasons to turn work in late. I invite you to talk with me about any challenges you face in completing your assignments. Christian Component: As we strive to provide a biblically-based approach to counseling, we expect you to evaluate all readings and discussions from a Christian perspective and work to integrate biblical truth into your life, thought, and work. Student Conduct: Expect to spend an average of 3-6 hours per week of focused study outside of class working on this course. The course assignments are planned to support your learning and none of them should be dismissed as unimportant. Everyone is expected to be respectful of themselves and others. If you become distressed about any material/discussions, please talk with me and/or make an appointment to see a counselor. Assignment Formatting: Formatting expectations are provided for each assignment. Assignments will be penalized if formatting is not provided according to requirements. All assignments should be submitted on Canvas, unless otherwise noted. Assignments should be submitted in DOC, DOCX, or RTF format. Accommodations: Students who require academic accommodations due to a documented physical, psychological or learning disability should request assistance from Student Services by contacting Ray Horton (learning.center@ccuniversity.edu). Students are encouraged to complete this request within the first two weeks of the semester. The Student Services Center is located in the 2 nd floor of President s Hall level from the elevator.
