Introduction n Catalog Description Large-scale software development in a team environment; software design and implementation, project management, testing and integration; teamwork skills, communication, source code management, documentation and presentations. Continuation and completion of CS 420 project. n Prerequisite Courses CS 420 Software Design Project I (with a C or better) n Prerequisite Topics o Experience with an object-oriented language (e.g. Java or C++) o Experience with a software design tools. o Technical Writing o Experience with the software development process (requirements analysis, specification, design, implementation, debugging) o Use of Unix or Windows environment for coding, compilation, debugging and testing and with distributed version control (specifically git). n Measured Course Outcomes Students taking this course will: Course Outcome Contributes to the assessment of Assessed by 1 Shares responsibilities and information on schedule with others on a team. Reference Material UML Distilled (Third Edition), Martin Fowler, Addison Wesley Inc. Software Engineering, Ian Sommerville, Addison-Wesley, 9th Edition. Software Engineering, A Practitioner's Approach, Roger Pressman, Mc Graw Hill, 7th Edition. 4. Course Overview As the final capstone class in software engineering, students will gain valuable experience in implementing, testing, and documenting software, in collaboration with a small team, yielding a useful product for industry. Since collaboration is such an integral part of software implementation, the student will gain practical use of a version control system; the version control system will be used to communicate progress and status of the software being developed. The course will begin by each team debriefing the instructor of the status of their CS 320 project and specifying what the final targeted deliverables will be, 2. establishing a schedule of team meetings for the semester, 3. adding the instructor ( lang ) to the team s git project as a reporter 4. defining the roles and responsibilities of each team member, and 5. structuring their software repository for introspection so that progress and individual contribution can be measured. 3

4 Each project will have a "README" file which will be used view the project status "at a glance." This is important both internally for developers and externally for outsiders that may want to use or "fork" your project. We will discuss what the important elements are of this document as well as other documentation strategies. Each team member will log their work in a shared TimeSheet that will be updated at least weekly. Practical software engineering strategies will be discussed and employed that focus on the implementation phase of each project. Frequent and regular meetings with team members, possibly including the industry sponsor, will be a critical part of project success. The minutes (informal) of team meetings will be included in each project s git repository. Project features should be complete, and the design frozen, by April 2 nd to leave time for testing a preparation for a final presentation. 5. Topics 1. Distributed repository workflow Merging, rebasing Conflict resolution 4. Verification, validation, testing. Use cases, Unit tests, regression tests 5. Distributing software, releases 6. Open Topics, perhaps specific to group projects 6. Grading n Assessment Tools DEADLINE o All projects are to be fully functional and tested by April 2. o No new features to be added after April 2, only bug fixes, documentation, and preparation for final presentation during the last month of the semester, All software artifacts, documentation, presentations, errata (e.g., screenshots), etc... are to be stored in the group's git repository (on gitlab.encs.vancouver.wsu.edu). Individual student assessment will largely be based on the contents and individual contributions to the group repository. Some team member roles may be more software heavy and yield more content, but each team member should be a regular contributor. o amount of content or "lines of code" is not necessarily an indication of quality contribution, but a lack of contributed content is a negative indicator of collaboration. 4

5 o o Regular and timely contributions, even if simple status updates, will be considered positively. Tools such as gitinspector, git blame, etc... will be used during the assessment process for individual contribution. The quality of the final product will be assessed by the industry sponsor, as well as the instructor, to determine an overall score for the team. Individual contribution will then be examined as described above. Each team member will keep a log of the work they are performing and update it (at least) weekly. Each team member will assess their peers. This will be accomplished via confidential surveys. The Team Sponsor(s) (the client) will assess the final results. Grading Score / Scale o Each project will be given a score between 0-100, by both the instructor and the sponsor. This score will be dominated by the extent to which the team followed their plan, how well they responded to changes and issues, and the quality of their deliverables. Functionality of the result will be a minority factor. o Each individual will receive a contribution score between from both the instructor and as a result of peer reviews. The instructor s score will be based primarily on an assessment of git artifacts. There will be no examinations in the course. n Factors Grades will be based on the following factors: factor weight Team assessment by the sponsor 25% Team assessment by the instructor 25% Individual contribution via peer reviews 25% Individual contribution assessed by instructor 25% Course grades (and grades on exams and assignments) will be assigned based on the following scale: A 94% A- 90% & <94% B+ 87% & <90% B 83% & <87% B- 80% & <83% C+ 77% & <80% C 73% & <77% C- 70% & <73% D+ 65% & <70% D 60% & <65% F < 60% 7. 6 n Attendance at team meetings schedule in advance is of high importance. Team meeting attendance will be recorded in the team s logs and will influence individual contribution scores. n Intellectual Property & Ethics Clearly, collaboration is a key component of success in this course, but proper attribution to material (e.g., source code) obtained elsewhere must be cited and all intellectual property and copyrights must be honored. Plagiarism will result in a failing grade. If you have specific questions about what constitutes plagiarism, please ask the instructor. Academic integrity is the cornerstone of the university and will be strongly enforced in this course. Any student found in violation of the academic integrity policy will be given an F for the course and will be referred to the Office of Student Conduct. For additional information about WSU's Academic Integrity policy/procedures please consult the WSU s Student Conduct webpage. n WSU has made an Emergency Notification system available to faculty, students and staff.
