1 STUDENT LEADERSHIP TRAINING MANUAL STEWARDSHIP & GUIDING PRINCIPLES University Mission Statement 1 BYU-Idaho is affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Its mission is to: 1. Build testimonies of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ and encourage living its principles. 2. Provide a quality education for students of diverse interests and abilities. 3. Prepare students for lifelong learning, for employment, and for their roles as citizens and parents. 4. Maintain a wholesome academic, cultural, social, and spiritual environment.

3 STUDENT LEADERSHIP TRAINING MANUAL STEWARDSHIP & GUIDING PRINCIPLES Activities Area Stewardship Statements 3 WELLNESS STEWARDSHIP STATEMENT Wellness Activities invites, educates and motivates all individuals to maintain a healthy lifestyles. OUTDOOR STEWARDSHIP STATEMENT Outdoor Activities introductes, provides, and involves students in lifetime outdoor activities. SERVICE STEWARDSHIP STATEMENT Service Activities invites students to learn the doctrines of Christ-like service, render service to others, and cultivate a desire for lifelong service. LIFE SKILLS STATEMENT Life Skills Activities provide opportunities for students to become disciple teachers and develop skills that will enrich their lives. SOCIAL STEWARDSHIP STATEMENT Social Activities invites students to gather, develop socially, discover their capacity for success and obtain a lasting desire to help others recognize their own potential. SPORTS STEWARDSHIP STATEMENT Recreational Sports Activities: Recreational sports provides a variety of sports where participants can compete and grow as leaders, team members, and individuals. Competitive Sports Activities: Competitive Sports provides opportunities for individuals to develop personal honor in a disciplined team environment. TALENT STEWARDSHIP STATEMENT Talent Activities provides opportunities for students to explore the arts as they discover, develop, and share their talents. In order to learn by faith, students need opportunities to take action. President Kim B. Clark

4 Student Area Director 4 Oversee one of the eight areas of the Activities Program. Participate in the selection of the Student Directors that will be serving directly with you in your area. Teach, train and empower the Student Directors by teaching: 1. The mission and vision of the University, the stewardship and guiding principles of the Activities Program and your area. 2. The organizational structure of the Activities Program and your area. 3. The roles of the student leaders in Activities and your area. 4. The principles of disciple-leadership found in the Learning By Faith manual and the scriptures, and how those principles apply to what the leaders are actually doing in their stewardships. 5. The Student-Leadership Model. Participate in the Student Area Director s council to direct introductory and ongoing training, counsel about Activities-wide issues and coordinate organization-wide efforts for organizational representation at campus events Observe Student Directors and provide feedback. Hold Student Directors in your area accountable for their stewardship over programming, teaching and training. Understand not only your own stewardship but also the stewardship of the Student Directors. See that effective communication processes are in place among student leaders and volunteers in your area. Observe programs and events in your area to ensure that they are done to an acceptable level and standard. Meet regularly with Area Coordinator (full-time advisor) to counsel, return and report. Assist the Area Coordinator and advisors in selecting a new Student Area Director for your area when your term of service is coming to an end. Pass on pertinent information about your area to the succeeding Student Area Director. Meet and counsel weekly with Student Directors in your area. 5 Student Director 5 Oversee programs and events in a specific category within one of the eight areas of Activities. Meet and counsel with your Student Area Director to discuss how efforts are helping fulfill the stewardship over the area and the overall Activities Program. Recruit and choose Student Coordinators for your category of activities within your area. Teach, train and empower the Student Coordinators by teaching: 1. The mission and vision of the University, the stewardship and guiding principles of the Activities Program and of your particular area. 2. The structure of the Activities Program and your stewardship area. 3. The roles of the student leaders in Activities and your stewardship area. 4. The doctrines and principles of discipleleadership found in the LBF manual and the scriptures, and how those principles and doctrines apply to what the leaders are actually doing in their stewardships. Hold Student Coordinators accountable for their stewardship. See that effective communication processes are in place among your leaders and volunteers. Ensure programs and events are done to an acceptable level and standard, but do not execute the day-to-day tactical duties of creating and running events and activities. Organize time-lines, calendars, and meeting times in a way that meets the needs of the area. Meet and counsel regularly with the Student Area Director, Student Coordinators, and Area Coordinator/advisor. Accountable to Student Area Director and Advisor; return and report regularly. Assist the Student Area Director and the Advisor in recruiting and selecting a new Student Director for the following semester. Pass on pertinent information about your area to the succeeding Student Director. 5. The Student-Leadership Model. 6. The tactical responsibilities of the Coordinator and Manager positions and the resources necessary to accomplish them (i.e. how to schedule a room, how to use Ilearn, how to obtain a van permit). We will all grow from having the opportunity to express ourselves and to consider opinions or approaches to a problem that may vary greatly from our own. Elder Dallin H. Oaks

6 Student Coordinator 6 Oversee a group of Managers with a common focus and communicate with Student Director regularly about progress of programs and events being organized by those Managers. Select or assist in the selection of Managers for your area. Help Managers understand their roles and teach them about available processes and resources to help them execute a program or event without stepping in and doing their work. Meet and counsel with your Student Director to plan for the growth and development of the students for whom you have stewardship. Teach, train and empower the Managers by teaching: 1. The mission and vision of the University and the stewardships and guiding principles of the Activities Program. 2. The stewardship and vision of your particular area. The tactical responsibilities of the Manager position. (i.e. how to schedule a room, how to use Ilearn, how to obtain a van permit, etc.). Ensure that effective communication processes are in place between you and the Managers. Hold Managers accountable for their stewardship. Know what is happening with each of your Managers and with the events and activities the Managers are planning and executing. Regularly meet with, counsel with, and report to your Student Director. Regularly meet and counsel with your Managers. Accountable to your Student Director; return and report regularly about your stewardship. Pass on pertinent information about your area to the succeeding Student Coordinator. 3. The structure of the Activities Program. 4. The roles of the student leaders in Activities. 5. The Student-Leadership Model. 6. The doctrines and principles of discipleleadership found in the LBF manual and the scriptures and how those principles and doctrines apply to what the leaders are actually doing in their stewardships. 7 Student Manager 7 Lead, plan and execute a program or event with the help of a council of volunteers. Counsel and report to your Student Coordinator about your program or event and how to meet the needs of the students. Recruit and choose volunteers for your council Know, apply and teach through example: 1. The mission and vision of the University, the Activities Program and the area. 2. The structure of the Activities Program. 3. The roles of the student leaders in Activities. 4. The doctrines and principles of discipleleadership found in the LBF manual and the scriptures and how those principles and doctrines apply to what the leaders are actually doing in their stewardships. 5. The Student-Leadership Model. Work to see that effective communication processes are in place with your volunteers. In conjunction with your student volunteers, plan and execute the events and activities in your area by: Delegating responsibilities. Holding students accountable. Managing the event. Counsel and communicate regularly with your Student Coordinator about your program or event and about the growth of the students for which the Manager has stewardship. Meet regularly with your volunteer council to plan, organize, and run the event. Return and report regularly to the Student Coordinator to report progress, issues and plans. See that pertinent summary information about your event or program is recorded upon completion of the event or semester. Empower volunteers and teach the tactical responsibilities of the volunteer position. 9 Student Leadership Guidelines [For Student Area Directors and Student Directors] 9 As you consider a student leadership experience in the Student Activities Program, please review the Stewardship Statement and following guidelines: STEWARDSHIP STATEMENT: Student Activities invites individuals to experience the power of acting for themselves through involvement in student-led programs and events. 1. HONOR CODE / DEVOTIONALS Student Leaders are expected to be exemplary in living the Brigham Young University-Idaho Honor Code. Student Leaders are expected to attend BYU- Idaho weekly devotionals. Devotional dress is encouraged when possible. 2. SCHOLARSHIP/EMPLOYMENT Student Leaders will receive a full-tuition scholarship upon being selected and meeting the following qualifications: a. On track during the semester serving and a matriculated full-time student (14 credits minimum). Does not have to be on track to apply, but must be in town for all training. b. Completed no more than 129 cumulative credits prior to the semester they serve. c. Must have earned a minimum of 30 credits at BYU-Idaho prior to the semester they serve. d. Maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA and no University restrictions. e. Serve an average of 10 hours per week. (There may be occasional times in the semester when more time is required.) 3. RESPONSIBILITIES Student Leaders will attend retreats, meetings, and other events as announced. Student Leaders will enable students to lead, guide, and direct those serving on their boards as they plan and organize activities. 4. AVAILABILITY Must be available to their student leaders and advisors on a regular basis throughout the semester, including checking s regularly for Activities communications. 5. COUNCIL MEETINGS Student Leaders are expected to attend the Activities Student Council Meetings as scheduled. The Student Leader will also hold weekly council meetings for the purpose of leadership training, planning, organizing, etc. in their own area. 6. ADVISOR Student Leaders will meet regularly with their advisor for purposes of training, evaluation, planning, etc. 7. EXPERIENCE Student Area Directors must have previous Activities experience at the coordinator level or above. Student Directors should have had previous experience at the manager level or above. f. If employed, it is recommended that the student leader not work more than 10 hours per week at an on/off campus job. Employment should be in a different area from where the student director is currently receiving a scholarship. g. May only serve as a Student Director one semester. May only serve as a Student Area Director one semester. 10 Student Leader Selection Process 10 Students interested in Activities leadership positions should apply online at the Activities website under Volunteer and Leadership. Students will then be contacted for an interview. STUDENT LEADER SELECTION TIMELINE (occurs every semester) Student Area Directors (SADs) will be selected from, and serve within the area New SADs will be selected by a council consisting of the Area Coordinator, Advisors, and current SAD. The Coordinator will preside. SADs Council will have a presiding officer. One of the 8 will be appointed by the Directors of the Activities Program. Students may apply for the next level of leadership while currently serving if approved by the area. Off-track students may apply for a position if they are in town during the selection and training process. Student Directors are selected by a panel consisting of the current Student Area Director, the new Student Area Director, the current Student Director and the Advisor. Coordinators will be selected by the new Student Director or as determined by area.
