1 MIRA MESA HIGH SCHOOL Reagan Road San Diego, CA A Bravissimo Award Winning Theatre Program Daniel Kriley dkriley@sandi.net Performing Arts Department Musical Theatre 3-4 Mira Mesa High School Course Syllabus Course Description: This two-semester course is a second year of instruction in the art of musical theatre. Students are required to give individual and ensemble performances on a regular basis utilizing a variety of acting, singing, and/or dancing skills alone or in combination. This course includes the study of audition techniques, musical theatre history, performance preparation and presentation, and show selection, design and production. Other topics, including dramatic structure, character/lyric/text analysis, and casting/directing, are explored. This course supports students who are exploring career pathways with significant time devoted to identifying the training necessary and the jobs available in Musical Theatre. Prerequisites: Musical Theatre 1-2 Textbook(s): Theatre in Action, various plays, scripts & scores Supplies/Materials Needed: Pencil, highlighter, notebook, costumes Student Fees: The Constitution of the State of California requires that we provide a public education to you free of charge. Your right to a free education is for all school/educational activities, whether curricular or extracurricular, and whether you get a grade for the activity or class. Subject to certain exceptions, your right to a free public education means that we cannot require you or your family to purchase materials, supplies, equipment or uniforms for any school activity, nor can we require you or your family to pay security deposits for access, participation, materials, or equipment. Under certain circumstances, students involved in extracurricular programs, clubs and/or sports may be required to attend fundraising events held by the program, sport or club just as you may be required to attend any other event put on by that program, club or sport. However, you will not be required to raise funds as a condition of participation. Academic Honesty Policy: All students are expected to abide by the Mira Mesa High School Academic Honesty Policy that is clearly outlined in the Student &

2 Parent Handbook as well as posted online with school registration forms for students and parents to review. Class Policies: All policies published in the MMHS Student/Parent handbook are followed; see Students are responsible for attending class daily, additional show rehearsals, dress rehearsals, class performances and encouraged to attend MMHS theatre performances. Daily rehearsals, afterschool rehearsals, dress rehearsals and performances are part of the grade given for the course. Demands on the student s time will be announced in advance so that necessary arrangements may be made to attend all rehearsals and functions. This class has a significant amount of weekend and after school requirements especially during the musical season from November-mid February. Theatre Safety: Each student is required to pass a safety test. Completion and passing of the safety test is the student s acknowledgement that he/she understands the class safety concerns and will model his/her behavior accordingly. For student safety the theatre has multiple security cameras installed. Academic Grading Policy: Academic Grades are based on points earned through class participation, class work, homework, quizzes and assessments and participation in performances. Grades will be available through Parent Connect. (Grading for this class is heavily weighted in performance attendance and rehearsals, missed major performances whether in class or after school will lower a student s grade.) Assignments missed due to an excused absence may be made up within 24 hours of the student s return to school Late work will not be accepted. Specifically my expectations are: Participation in learning means: Student is on task and constantly paying attention. Student actively participates and challenges themselves in the class. Follows classroom rules means: Student comes prepared for class Student is in assigned seat ready to work when the bell rings Student follows directions Student is respectful to self and others.

4 Student places safety of oneself and of others as paramount by following all the theatre facility rules and regulations. No hats inside. No gum! Displays on task means: Student actively completes the assigned task Student is not working on work from another class Electronic devices such as phones or ipods are not to be out in class unless the student has obtained prior permission from the instructor (under no circumstances will instructional time be used investigating missing electronic devices if you bring electronic devices on campus you do so at your own risk.) Student does not eat or drink in class (bottled water being the only exception.) Respectful to others means: Student treats others with kindness. Student does not interrupt instructors or other students. Student respects the diversity and talent of others and responds with encouragement and praise. Student demonstrates the highest level of audience etiquette to all performers and speakers. Consequences: Letters, s, phone calls home Lunch and afterschool detentions Alternative assignments Referrals Lowering of citizenship grades Major Assignments: Major assignments/performances include The Annual Gala, Spring Musical and end of the year Drama Festival. Students and parents should be prepared for a significant amount of after school and weekend requirements. Minimum Day Schedule Musical Theatre period 7 does not meet on Mondays. There may be rehearsals scheduled on Mondays, but there is no official school attendance taken on those days.
