Course Description This course will cover functional notation, graphs and inverses of linear, polynomial, and rational functions, rational exponents, arithmetic and geometric progressions, logarithmic and exponential functions, systems of linear equations. Prerequisite: passing score on the Entry Level Mathematics examination or passage of MATH 90. Goal 5: Students will understand and produce correct mathematical proofs SLO Students will understand correct mathematical proofs SLO Students will produce correct mathematical proofs Online Program (Required) WebAssign Class Key: csusb Required and Optional Texts/Materials Textbook (Optional) College Algebra & Trig Math 110/120 - Custom edition for Cal State U San Bernardino Earl Swokowski and Jeffery Cole, 13 th Edition ISBN: Materials (Required) Pencil, eraser, graph paper, ruler/straight edge, and a scientific calculator. All work MUST be done in pencil. A score of 0 will be given for any assignment done in pen. Assignments Homework Homework will be assigned after every class and will be due every Tuesday (unless I have rescheduled an assignment due date). Assigned homework questions will be listed on WebAssign. Keeping up with your homework is essential for your success in this class. You are encouraged to work with classmates on your assignments but you need to write up your solutions independently. Some homework problems may be covered in class, but if you have any questions please see me during my office hours.

3 Late homework will be accepted but the highest grade that can be received for late homework is 75%. Quizzes Quizzes will cover previous sections and will be taken from the list of homework questions. Tentative dates for quizzes will be announced in class. Project In order to enhance your understanding of the social and historical context of scientific developments within the natural sciences you will be assigned a written project. Please see the Project Guidelines for further details. The project will be due by Thursday, December 4 th. Midterm There will be one midterm this quarter. The tentative date for the midterm is Tuesday, October 28 th. You can make-up this midterm only if you have an acceptable excuse! If possible, I must be informed of absences in advance. A score of 0 will be given if the absence is not excused. Final The final exam will be held on Tuesday, December 9 th from 12:00pm 1:50pm in RG 205. Do not be late! The exam is comprehensive. There are no make-ups for the final exam so if you do not show up you will be given a zero for the final. Grading Policy Your grade will be based on homework, quizzes, a midterm and a final exam; they will be weighed as follows: Grade % Homework 20% A Quizzes 20% Midterm 30% B Final Exam 30% C NC 69 and below University Policies Please read General Regulations and Procedures in the CSUSB Bulletin of Courses for the university s policies on course withdrawal, cheating and plagiarism Plagiarism and Cheating Students are expected to be familiar with the University s Policy on cheating and plagiarism. 4 Instances of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Cheating on exams or plagiarism (presenting the work of another as your own, or the use of another person s ideas without giving proper credit) will result in a failing grade and sanctions by the University. For this class, all assignments are to be completed by the individual students unless otherwise specified. Classroom Protocol Students are responsible for all material covered in class and also for all announcements made therein. All devices capable of electronic communication should be turned off during class. Such devices must not be visible during an exam. No food is allowed in the classroom. You may have a drink if it has a sealed lid on it. You are expected to attend and participate in every class meeting. I expect you to ask questions, take notes and answer questions given.
