1 Dean of Students SUMMARY DESCRIPTION Under direction of the principal, serves as assistant instructional leader Incumbent performs related work as required. (Secondary) EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES Supports the vision leadership of the school principal that appropriately involves staff, parents, students, and the community in the identification and accomplishment of the school's mission; recognizes the individual needs of all staff and students, including those who are at risk because of diverse cultures, backgrounds, or abilities; applies effective human relations skills; encourages and develops the leadership of others; analyzes relevant information, makes decisions, delegates responsibility, and provides appropriate procedural support and follow-up; bonds the school community through shared values and beliefs; initiates and manages constructive change; advances the profession through participation as a member of local, state, and national professional groups. Demonstrates knowledge of curriculum, instruction and assessment and their relationship to program goals and objectives; encourage students and staff to participate in co-curriculum activities that enhance and complement what is learned in the classroom. Regularly observes the teaching methods and strategies being used and ensures that they are varied and effective; applies principles of teaching and learning for both children and adults; articulates effective classroom management and planning processes. Sets high expectations for students, staff, parents, and self; helps teachers understand and apply teaching styles that complement the varied learning styles of students; encourages students and staff alike to set high personal goals and offers encouragement and support in the achievement of those goals; involves others in designing staff development programs that match the goals of the school with needs of the participants; encourages staff participation in professional development activities; engages in continuing personal and professional development. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES/SPECIFIC JOB RELATED TASKS: Shares with principal the responsibility for protecting health and welfare of students Duties Assists students in establishing high standards of conduct Properly addresses the improvement of student attendance and discipline Reports illegal acts to the proper authorities Assists in developing and administering practices dealing with campus control and security Patrols buildings and grounds Investigates and resolves all discipline problems in a fair and just manner Interviews students and witnesses in disciplinary investigations
2 Investigate, adjudicate, and monitor minor infractions of the school code in the form of progressive discipline such as detentions, classroom referrals, Saturday detention, and in-school suspension Suspends students from school in accordance Safety team and Behavior Matrix policy and procedures and state law Oversees conflict resolution and Peer Mediation to resolve student conflicts Maintains disciplinary records required by policy, regulation, law or good practice Assists with and presents presentations of the school s case in due process proceedings for suspension and expulsion with collaboration with the Safety team Oversees all matters of student attendance Communicates with parents, teachers and Safety teams on student attendance. Evaluates attendance issues individually by student need Assigns students appropriate consequences for truancy Decides if absences are excusable under state law and board policy Advises students and parents on ways to improve attendance Compares information or data with other records for verification Assists students in establishing high standards of conduct Provides input as needed for student placement and evaluation Advises on modification of program to meet individual student needs Meets weekly with Special Education teams Works with the Safety Team in the implementation of proactive disciplinary interventions of the Behavior Matrix Coordinates and refers students to the suspension reduction program Assists new students with transitioning to school Makes recommendations for appropriate revisions of and assists in the interpretation of programs, policies and procedures affecting students lives in school Duties: Confers with parents, teachers, counselors, support service personnel and students on matters of Discipline, welfare, academic development Implements and enforces Board Policies Prepares administrative response reports as requested by the Principal Provides and maintains appropriate communication with family and community, including law enforcement agencies and the judicial systems. Duties: Serves as a member of the leadership team Purchases, under approved procedures, items of supply and equipment necessary for the operation of the school system Works with the Principal on building facilities operations Assists with evaluation of departmental Support Staff Works with community and government agencies on problems relating to drug abuse and
3 truancy Follows and enforces high expectations related to all law guiding mandatory reporting and all other student confidentiality matters Serves as liaison between school and home Personal Skills: 1. Possesses good listening skills; is able to express thoughts clearly in verbal and written communications. 2. Possesses the ability to resolve conflict in a consistent and positive manner. 3. Possesses a vision for the future. 4. Appreciates a diversity of viewpoints. 5. Is transparent and skillful in maintaining productive positive and professional interpersonal relationships with the district s constituents. Implements all levels of NEPF as related to Administrative Standards 1. Recognizes and celebrates: (a) my accomplishments, (b) colleagues accomplishments, and (c) student accomplishments (1) 2. Articulates a clear vision for quality teaching and learning, professional code of conduct, and safe and respectful learning environments 3. Assists with the alignment of the curriculum and instructional programming with the school s collaborative mission and vision 4. Promotes high expectations for all faculty and staff 5. Upholds a professional standard of personal conduct 6. Assists administrative and teaching staff in the preparation and delivery of instructional materials 7. Implements a clearly defined plan for (a) ELLs and (b) Exceptional learners 8. Promotes the effective use of instructional technology 9. Aligns the assessment program to the district s and/or school s curriculum 10. Monitors the effectiveness of the school or district s assessment programming for all levels of student ability 11. Uses student achievement data to improve teaching and learning processes 12. Helps teachers and administrators use assessment results to enhance teaching and learning 13. Keeps informed of the latest research and practice 14. Encourages the use of research-supported instructional and assessment practices 15. Supports the recruitment, development of quality personnel 16. Implements innovative and effective ways of improving the professional practice of faculty 17. Establishes clear criteria for professional growth 18. Provides constructive feedback 19. Projects a demeanor that is welcoming, supportive, and engaging 20. Is an effective instructional leader 21. Voices disagreement without creating unnecessary conflict

Implements efficient administrative procedures to support the teaching and learning functions of the school 25. Assumes responsibility for the implementation of policies 26. Directs effectively the activities of employees in the school to ensure continuing operations 27. Allocates the necessary physical resources to support the accomplishment of goals 28. Is engaging and articulate in public forums 29. Generates enthusiasm for the collaborative efforts of our school Conveys constructive suggestions from students, staff, parents, and the community for improving the school's program; applies effective observation and conferencing skills; inspires teachers at all levels of skill and experience to acquire new competencies and experiences. Uses collaborative strategic planning to help identify and accomplish the school's mission, goals and objectives; recruits, selects, assigns, and organizes staff in such a way as to assure the greatest potential for the accomplishment of the school's mission; facilities the identification, training, and monitoring of the staff to insure effective support in accomplishing the strategic plan of the district; attracts volunteers and provides them effective training and meaningful assignments; provides a safe, orderly climate for learning; assist with management of the operation and maintenance of the physical plant. Is aware of and subject to appropriate laws of the State of Nevada, and the regulations of the district and the Nevada Department of Education. Deans are responsible for other duties as assigned by your Principal supervisor. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is continuously interacting with the public, staff and students. The employee frequently must meet multiple demands from several people. The employee is regularly required to sit and stand. The employee is required to walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. Occasionally the employee must use hand/grip strength to operate office equipment. Ability to withstand long term use of video display terminals is required. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee is required to regularly interact with the students, staff and the public.
5 EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS Education/Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be: 1. Education: A Bachelor s Degree in teaching or a related field required. A Master's Degree in School Administration or currently enrolled in an administrative credential program-highly desired; AND 2. Experience: Five (5) years teaching experience with one (1) year of cte/educational leadership in the last five years; AND 3. Highly Effective/Effective or Satisfactory evaluations in the last five (5) years. Knowledge of: Child development at all ages and human relations, especially with respect to other school district personnel such as teachers, counselors, coordinators and school district administrators in the fields of curriculum, personnel and business; the problems of parents and community leaders and be willing to cooperate with them; modern instructional techniques and competence in elementary school curriculum areas; the vertical structure of the courses of study in the District and the importance of articulation in these areas; principles and practices of school administration, including, teaching methods and techniques, program development, applicable federal, state and local laws, regulations, ordinances and policies; human resources development; school law; conflict resolution; public relations; principles of effective management, staff supervision and administration. Skill at: Planning, organizing, assigning and coordinating the activities of a professional and support staff; presenting ideas effectively, verbally and in writing; dealing constructively with conflict and developing consensus; selecting, dealing effectively with people within the community; team building; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; working with people, staff supervision and administration. Licenses/Certificates: School Administrators License highly recommended and desired. Proper endorsement is necessary for commencement of a contract.
