Catalog Description: Dynamics of rid bodies, force-mass acceleration, work-energy, impulse momentum and introduction of mechanical vibrations. Prerequisite: ENGR 2301: Engineering Statics MATH 2415: Calculus III Required Text: Vector Mechanics for Engineers: Dynamics, 11 th Edition, Ferdinand Beer, ISBN

2 Academic Discipline Program Learning Outcomes: 1. Demonstrate ability to work independently, as well as part of a project team. Develop interpersonal and presentation skills through participation in laboratory and/or assigned project activities. 2. Demonstrate proficiency in the design of experiments and processing/ interpretation of data obtained. Work independently or participate in a group effort towards the set-up of experiments, data collection and analysis of the data obtained, as well as prepare a scientific report. 3. Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamentals of mathematics, science and engineering at a basic and intermediate level. Demonstrate understanding of the fundamental principles underlying Physics and Engineering including, but not limited to Engineering Statics/Dynamics, Fundamentals of Electric Circuits and Engineering Computation. 4. Demonstrate systematic problem-solving skills. Solve Engineering problems using appropriate mathematical and computational tools, such as MatLab and Excel. Course Student Learning Outcomes: 1. Develop an ability to define and solve problems in dynamics and kinematics using advanced techniques. 2. Demonstrate the skill to use the fundamental principles of applied kinematics for particles and rigid bodies. 3. Analyze the dynamics of particles and rigid bodies with applications. 4. Demonstrate an understanding of conservation laws for momentum and energy. Tentative Topics List: Tentatively, the course will cover chapters in the Beer Vector Mechanics Text. Attendance: Class is very important. If your absences exceed two classes during this course, you may be administratively withdrawn (an F will be issued after thefinal drop date). Attendance count will begin with the first class. If you are absent from class, it is your responsibility to obtain the lecture material from one of your classmates. Withdrawal: HCC policy provides that students may be dropped after missing more than eight hours of class time. A grade of FX will be issued in this case. Withdrawal from the course is the responsibility of the student and must be done by the drop date. If the student stops attending, and does not drop the class, an FX will be recorded for the course. Students who take a course for the third time or more must now pay significant tuition/fee increases at HCC and other Texas public colleges and universities. At HCC it is an additional $50 per credit hour. Also, the state of Texas has passed a new law limiting new students (as of Fall 2007) to no more than six withdrawals throughout their academic career in obtaining a baccalaureate degree.

3 Exams: There will be 3 midterm examinations and one final examination. TENITATIVELY scheduled for: Exam 1 (Ch 11-13): March 9th Exam 2 (Ch 14-16): April 11th Exam 3 (Ch 17-19): May 4th Final Exam: Thursday May 11 th, 2 PM The exams are Exams dates may be moved up or pushed back depending on the progress of the lectures. Exams are closed book. You can use a calculator and instructor approved reference material. Solutions to exams will NOT be posted on the learning web. THERE ARE NO MAKE-UP EXAMS GIVEN WITHOUT AN EXCUSED ABSENSES. A note from a medical professional is required for any absence due to illness. Exam Rules and Policies: Makeup exams will only be given with a note from HCC disability services documenting a medical need to miss an exam. Exam Rules: -No talking or discussion is allowed. -You must bring your own calculator and make sure it has adequate batteries. -Graphing calculators are not allowed. Only scientific and other similar calculators will be allowed. If you come to the exam with only a graphing calculator, you will have to take the exam without a calculator. -No cell phone or any other electronics may be used. -No books or other references allowed unless otherwise instructed. -Restroom breaks are not allowed during exams. If you are having digestive issues the day of the exam, you may request that the exam be given one problem at a time. -The instructor reserves the right to inspect any property a student has on their desk during exam time. Homework: Homework will be assigned on regular basis. Homework is due on the date assigned at the beginning of lecture. No late homework will be accepted except for unusual circumstances. Solutions will be posted on Blackboard. Homework should be submitted on engineering paper (preferred) or plain white printer paper. Solutions should be presented in a clear methodical manner. Follow the homework submission guidelines when completing your assignment. Solutions which are not clearly presented will NOT receive credit. Be sure that you use the correct edition/version of the textbook. Problems done from other edition/versions which do not match the assigned problems will not receive credit.

4 Homework Submission Guidelines (Professionalism Requirements): 1. Homework should be submitted using letter size (8 ½ x 11 ) paper. Engineering paper is preferred but plain graph paper is allowed if you have no access to engineering paper. 2. A title page should be included with the following: a. Name of Student b. Student Number c. Course Number and Name d. Homework Number 3. The second page should be a written or typed summary of the assignment. This should include: a. The type of problems being worked. b. The principles and assumptions present in the equations used. c. The applications and types of members these tools may be used for. This summary should be one or two paragraphs, written in your own words. 4. There should be no more than 2 problems per page. This is to ensure that there is enough space on the paper for the grader to add comments. 5. Multiple sheets should be stapled at the top left corner of the page. 6. The submitted papers should be free of frail edges, stains, smudges and wrinkles. 7. All problems should include: a. Problem Number b. A diagram of the problem (draw all free body diagrams when necessary) -drawn by hand, do not simply photocopy problem from textbook. c. A set of given quantities d. A set of unknown quantities e. A set of assumptions 8. All numbers and writing should be clear and readable. 9. When required to produce a graph, use a computer program such as excel or matlab to generate the plot. Do not draw it by hand! 10. The final answer should be boxed and at the bottom of the problem. Grades: Grade Scale: Homework and Quizzes = 20% A: Professional Practice = 10% B: Midterm Exams (3) = 45% C: Final Exam = 25% D: F: <60 If necessary, I reserve the right to adjust the grade scale at the end of the semester to your benefit. If you earn less than 65% on all Exams or if you fail to earn at least 50% on the Final you may fail the course, regardless of your course grade. **NOTE: There will be no makeup work or extra credit allowed/granted at the end of or during the semester unless allowed/granted to everyone by the instructor. All assignments must be turned in at the appropriate time to receive credit.

5 Laptops/PDAs/MP3 players/cell Phones or other electronic devices The use of any electronic device, except an approved calculator, is not permitted during exams. Your exam will be collected and your grade will be a zero if you are caught using a non-approved electronic device/calculators. Any instances of a calculator inappropriately used during an exam will be the basis of alleging Academic Misconduct and may result in Failing (F) of the course at the determination of the course s instructor or the basis for a recommendation for expulsion from the University. Any Calculator used during an exam in this course must meet the requirements stated within the policy below. Calculator Policy Only NCEES approved calculators will be permitted during tests and your test will be collected and your grade will be a zero if you are using a non-approved calculator. The approved calculators include the following: (Please check the NCEES website for a complete listing, Examples include but are not limited to: Hewlett Packard HP 33s, HP 35s, and no others Casio All FX 115 models Texas Instruments All TI 30X or TI-36X models. If you are unsure about your calculator, it is your responsibility to check with the instructor for approval. At the discretion of the course instructor, any calculator not meeting the requirements stated (especially in the case of a graphing calculator) may be used but only after an inspection of the device and a clearing of all the memory within the device, performed for the instructor at a time immediately prior to the exam. At any time during the exam your calculator is subject to a random search by the instructor. Failure or refusal to clear all memory or to surrender your calculator to search will disqualify you from the exam immediately, unless you can produce a calculator meeting the requirements as stated above Professional Practice: Your professional practice grade will be computed based upon your attendance, the number of assignments you turn in, and performance in class. Final day to withdraw: The final day to withdraw from the course without penalty is April 11 th 2017 Student Responsibilities and Roles: Student is responsible to understand the syllabus. Student is responsible to read the textbook and/or course material without instructor explicitly assigning reading.

6 Student is responsible to attend all lecture sections. It is the student s responsibility to properly withdraw from the class. Student is responsible to finish all homework on time. Student is responsible to ask questions on any material or homework he/she is having difficulty to understand. Student is responsible to take the exams and final on the assigned dates. Student need to be active and engaged with the instructor. Student handbook: Students with Disabilities: Any student with a documented disability (e.g. physical, learning, psychiatric, vision, hearing, etc.) who needs to arrange reasonable accommodations must contact the Disability Service Office ( ) at the beginning of each semester. Faculty members are authorized to provide only the accommodations requested by the Disability Support Services Office. Student Discipline: As students studying for the engineering profession, adult and professional behavior is expected. Disruptive behavior/ activities, which interfere with teaching and /or learning will not be tolerated, and may result in an administrative withdrawal without refund. Academic Dishonesty, Plagiarism, and Collusion: HCC Policy: Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating on a test, plagiarism, and collusion. Cheating on a test includes copying from another student's test paper; using, during a test, materials not authorized by the person giving the test; collaborating with another student during a test without authority; knowingly using, buying, selling, stealing, transporting, or soliciting in whole or part the contents of an unadministered test; or bribing another person to obtain a test that is to be administered. Plagiarism means the appropriation of another's work and the unacknowledged incorporation of that work in one's own written work for credit. Collusion means the unauthorized collaboration with another person in preparing written work offered for credit. In simplified terms, cheating is: (1) taking unchanged passages (or slightly edited) from another person's writing and portraying them as one's own; (2) submitting a paper that includes paraphrases of another person's writing without giving credit; (3) having someone else write your paper for you; (4) copying or using another person's work during in-class writing or testing; and (5) the unauthorized use of electronic devices during in-class writing or testing. Keep in mind also that whether you are cheating or not, not following testing or writing rules properly, such as communicating with your neighbor or using a cell phone during a test will be construed as cheating. This is not an exhaustive list of the forms of scholastic dishonesty. If you are in doubt, consult your instructor

7 Instructor s Policy: This course has a zero tolerance policy for academic dishonesty. If any student is caught cheating in any form during a major term exam, a grade of F will be issued for the semester grade. The course instructor has issued grades of F for cheating before, and will not hesitate to do so again. Title IX Statement TITLE IX OF THE EDUCATION AMENDMENTS OF 1972, 20 U.S.C. A 1681 ET. SEQ. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 requires that institutions have policies and procedures that protect students rights with regard to sex/gender discrimination.
