3 1. Shirebrook Academy PL vision 2. Professional Learning Programme Sep 2016-July Four Steps for high quality Learning and Teaching Staff have focused their efforts relentlessly to develop and maintain a consistently high quality of learning and teaching Ofsted report 2013.

4 The whole staff at Shirebrook Academy believe that through great learning and teaching every student will feel special and will therefore grow as both a learner and a citizen. By ensuring great learning and teaching is at the heart of the Academy s vision, we aim to provide all students with a relevant and enjoyable educational experience, where every student matters and no student is left behind. Shirebrook Academy believes that we are all learners, no matter what stage we are in our lives or our careers. Consequently, the Professional Learning (PL) of all staff is central to the Shirebrook Academy vision and to the Academy School Improvement Plan. Our teaching and support staff are our greatest resource and regular, inspiring and innovative PL is therefore crucial to our success. We view high quality in-house PL as the key to enhancing staff pedagogy and developing practice. This ultimately provides our students with a creative and effective experience of education, building their learning power and encouraging them to be life-long learners and to achieve excellent results. The Shirebrook Academy PL Programme addresses the individual needs of staff; whether they are just starting out or are already highly proficient there is always more to learn in order to improve our students learning experience. The PL Programme is developed by the Assistant Principal for Learning and Teaching and led by a range of staff including Learning Leaders, Senior Leaders and other highly skilled practitioners; all possess different strengths and skill sets required to enhance Learning and Teaching.

10 1. Get into good habits You need to get into good teaching habits that mean you deliver high quality lessons day in, day out without suffering exhaustion. We all have our own teaching style but certain strategies have to been proven to work, so build your practice on a foundation of solid, proven techniques. Remember the phrase: imitate before innovate. To start with, imitate best practice, once you have mastered these basic techniques then don t be afraid to take some risks and trial some innovative activities! Establish routines and follow the school behaviour policy to deal with incidents of poor behaviour. Greet your students at the door and welcome them into the classroom. Develop an environment of mutual respect. Teach well-planned lessons with challenge and quality content- use starters, questioning strategies, differentiation and effective AFL techniques to keep students motivated and engaged. Mark books on a regular basis as outlined in the Academy s assessment and marking policy and adhering to the literacy focus of the half term. 2. It s all about the learners Always plan for the specific learners in your class. Ask yourself, how can I help them be better learners? How can I Build their Learning Power? Focus on what they are doing as learners as much as what you are doing as a teacher. If you are working harder than they are then something is going wrong! 3. It s all about progress All Learning and Teaching strategies are leading to the ultimate goal - progress. You need to be reflecting all of the time; Are my lessons CHALLENGING ENOUGH? Are ALL my students meeting the Shirebrook Standard? Are SOME making progress well beyond Shirebrook Standard to ELITE level? How do I know? AFL, questioning, assessment, differentiation and effective tracking are the key to knowing your students are making progress. Know the data for your classes and their expected levels of progress over time. Use AFL techniques within the lesson/over a series of lessons to check their understanding of a subject/topic- see the Academy assessment and marking policy for ideas. Use a variety of questioning techniques within a lesson to check progress and understanding and ensure you KNOW that all students have grasped a concept/idea. Monitor the progress of students using assessments and identify those who are underperforming/over performing quickly. Act on your information with appropriate intervention strategies. Use differentiation effectively in your lessons- CHALLENGE and SUPPORT your students. 4. Teaching is a learning curve Education is about learning; a GREAT teacher always strives to develop their subject/pedagogical knowledge on a regular basis. The commitment to a high-quality in-house PL programme means that all staff can benefit from: Attending PL sessions on a regular basis. Attending research/department/year group meetings on a regular basis. Working with the leaders of learning and teaching and to develop learning and teaching strategies. Observing leaders of learning and teaching/experienced members of staff. Being observed and provided with detailed feedback colleagues Working with other members of your department on joint planning techniques Working with staff from other departments to develop learning and teaching strategies. Using STAR video technology to improve your practice and to allow detailed reflection. The opportunity to contribute to the delivery of PL.
