2 Looking for things to do with your class during British Science Week? When it comes to getting people excited about science, Bath Taps into Science has it covered. From Monday 10th - Friday 16th March, the University of Bath's Festival Education Programme is back. We've got a week of hands-on workshops, demos and activities in your school and at the University, rounded off with our huge schools fair. All the activities are free and open to all; thousands of schools students discover something new, year after year. You can find out more in this programme, and at bathtapsintoscience.com. 7 Look into my Eyes Let our robot teach you all about light. You ll get to use lasers and light pianos as well as making your own crystals. While at the University you ll get to meet real scientists and also get to see the facilities including our labs. Location The University of Bath Dates Mon 12th, Tues 13th, Wed 14th, Thurs 15th Size of group Max. 30 students Length of session 3 hours Times One am or pm slot available per day Marshmallow Tower Challenge Can you build a tall tower? Can you build a tall tower using just marshmallows and spaghetti? A group from the University of Bath will support a session showing students the engineering behind some of the biggest towers. They ll then get to put it to the test to see who can build the tallest and strongest tower. 8 Make your own solar cells Can fruit make electricity? You ll get to find out when you make your own solar cells using different fruits. Dates Tues 13th or Wed 14th Size of group Around 30 students Length of session 1 hour Times On pm slot available Build a rocket in an hour Bring up to 4 of your Year 4 pupils to our Build a Rocket in an hour event where we will create high quality pneumatic rockets that they will launch as far as possible. Parents are invited to pick up from the School and see the rocket launching. 9 The Science of Slime Make your own polymer slime and explore its weird properties. Work in the dedicated science labs on this curriculum focused activity. 10 Schools Science Fair Come to the University of Bath for a fun filled science adventure. This free visit for year 5 and 6 students will give them the opportunity to meet actual scientists and get hands-on with real science! There s also an opportunity for year 7 and 8 students to present an exhibition stand alongside university and industry scientists. 11 Mathletes: What's the probability? Our Mathletes will show you why probability is important in everyday life and we ll show you how to win at monopoly. Location Your School Dates Mon 12th, Tues 13th, Wed 14th Size of group No limit Length of session 45mins 1 hour Times One am or pm slot available per day IOP Science Ambassador Day The Science Ambassadors scheme is designed to help build confidence through supporting year 8 students in the planning and delivery of physics-based outreach for primary schools. Students attending this training day will learn how to deliver a range of science demos and activities, as well as taking part in a session on presentation skills. Extract your own DNA Ever wondered what your DNA looks like? Wonder no more, you will extract your own DNA to take home with you. 16 Salters Festival of Chemistry Salters Festivals are a series of one-day fun events held at universities throughout the UK and Ireland. The festivals provide the opportunity for enthusiastic young students to spend a day in a university department and to take part in practical chemistry activities which are fun! Prizes are awarded to the winning teams. Date 15th May 2018 Location Time Book The University of Bath 9:30am 3pm festivalsofchemistry.co.uk Nuffield Research Projects Nuffield Research Placements provide over 1,000 students each year with the opportunity to work alongside professional scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians. Students in the first year of a post-16 science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) course are eligible to apply. Placements are available across the UK, in universities, commercial companies, voluntary organisations and research institutions.
