1 MA 305: Introductory Linear Algebra and Matrices Summer Syllabus 2.1 Instructor Information Instructor: Instructor Contact: Moodle Page: Dr. Bevin Maultsby (no voic ) php?id=282 Communication: Moodle will be used for most communications in this course. In particular, math questions should be asked in class, in office hours, or on the Moodle forum. I will not necessarily answer math questions sent by , particularly outside of 9am 5pm, M F. You are encouraged to discuss concepts and homework in the forums, which will be monitored by Dr. Maultsby. Office Hours: Tuesday and Thursday 1:30 2:30pm Wednesday and Friday 10:30am 11:30am by appointment Office: SAS Hall 3230 Class: MTWRF, 11:40 am 1:10 pm in SAS Course prerequisites or restrictive statements. Prerequisite: MA 241, or MA 231 & MA 132. Credit is not allowed for both MA 305 and MA GEP Designation This class does not satisfy a GEP requirement. 2.4 Student learning outcomes The course is an elementary introduction to matrix theory and linear algebra. Compares with MA 405 Introductory Linear Algebra, more emphasis is placed on methods, calculations, and applications to other scientific disciplines. 1

2 2.5 Textbook Information Linear Algebra and its Applications by David Lay, 5th Edition. ISBN: The publisher has provided powerpoints for most sections which I will post on Moodle; this material is not to be shared or posted elsewhere. 2.6 Course overview We will cover all or parts of Chapters 1 7. Topics include systems of equations, Euclidean vector spaces, determinants, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, linear transformations, similarity, and applications such as numerical solutions of equations and computer graphics. 2.7 Course structure This course will consist of five lectures per week. Summer school is fast-paced and every lecture will cover a large volume of material. Lectures will be interactive and students are encouraged to come to class prepared for discussions and activities. Class expectations. You are not allowed to use a laptop in class unless indicated otherwise. Any student using a smartphone, ipod, or other device irrelevant to class will be asked to put it away or leave. During tests, cell phones must off and out of sight. Homework. Homework assignments are all on WebWork; the link to the course WebWork page can be found on Moodle. Homework assignments focus on calculations; although some of these problems may be done with a TI 83 or MATLAB, you should ensure that you understand how to set up and solve each problem without computational aid. As summer school is fast paced, homework assignments are long and due frequently. You should begin working on them as soon as possible; asking questions on the day the homework is due reflects poorly upon you. Each homework assignment is due at 11:59pm on the date listed. Solutions will become available at 11:59am on the following day; if you do not submit the homework in time and want to request an extension, you must me before the solutions become available. (There is no guarantee that an extension will be granted.) You may work on homework with other students; however, you are responsible for understanding all of the material covered in class or assigned as homework. Therefore, you should make sure that you have thought about and written a solution to each homework problem as an individual. The best way to succeed in this course is to do as many problems as you possibly can to build up speed, confidence and understanding. Doing only homework exercises is a minimal effort. 2

4 Attendance is taken but does not directly factor into your course grade. However, if you have fewer than 5 total absences, the final exam can replace your lowest midterm score. There is practically no time to catch-up in summer school; missing class is detrimental to your ability to do well in this course. Your grades will be posted on Moodle. The final grade will be assigned using the plus/minus grading system according to the following chart: A+ : A : A : B+ : B : B : C+ : C : C : D+ : D : D : F : For example, a score of is a B, not a B Late Assignments Solutions to the WebWork assignments are automatically posted 12 hours after the assignment is due; therefore, late homework will not be accepted. If you need an extension on a homework assignment due to a documented reason, you must tell me within 12 hours of the assignment s due date Attendance/Absence Policy Attendance is taken but does not directly factor into your course grade; see If a midterm is missed due to documented and accepted circumstances, the midterm may be made up in a timely fashion. If you are going to miss an exam, you must tell me within 24 hours of the scheduled time for the exam Academic Integrity For the NCSU policy, see the Code of Student Conduct at policies.ncsu.edu/policy/pol Quizzes, Exams & Final: Students will neither give nor receive any assistance on any midterm nor on the final exam. Use of cell phones and calculators during exams is not permitted. Homework: You are expected to work together on the homework; however, each student must submit his or her own homework on WebWork. Utilization of the Honor Pledge: All exams and tests must be completed independent of assistance from other people.
