1 BT201, Introduction to Word Melinda Platt Professional Technical Elective, 3 Credits Course Description Microsoft Word 2013 is a word processing program that makes it easy to create a variety of professional-looking documents, from simple letters and memos to newsletters, research papers, Web pages, and various business documents. This course is designed for the beginning MS Word user. Students will gain the following course objectives through practical lab applications. Course Objectives The student will develop a variety of skills including: Navigating Windows Operating System Environment Overview of Office 2013/2016 Application Software Browsing and Using the Internet Downloading Files from the Internet Managing Files and Folders Creating Professional-Styled Documents Meeting Timelines Consistent With Real Life Business Standards Communicating By (Business Standards for Written Communications) Creating, Printing and Editing Word Documents Formatting Text, Paragraphs, Entire Documents Creating and Formatting Tables Illustrating Documents With Graphic Working with Themes and Building Blocks Merging Word Documents Integrating Word With Other Programs Enhancing Documents with Special Features Using Help Systems Recommended Preparation Recommended preparation is the BA131 course prior to this course. It s helpful to have keyboarding skills and/or basic computer familiarity. Assignments & Exams The course is designed with weekly modules. Each module indicates the assignments, quizzes or exams and due dates. 64
2 Required Text Note: The newest version of Word is We decided on this book however because of lower cost to students. There are few changes between Word 2013 and Word 2016, so learning outcomes are very close to being the same. Microsoft Office Word 2013*, Complete Jennifer Duffy and Carol M. Cram, 2014 *We cover about one-half of the textbook for BT201 and the other half for BT202. Required Software* Microsoft Office 365 University (Includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access + Other Applications) * You should be able to access the software FREE through your BMCC account. If you want to purchase it, BMCC s Bookstore sells this software at an academic price to students for about $80 in a subscription base offer. It also includes extra applications in addition to what you need for this class, which is an added bonus. Required Reliable Computer Access & Removable Storage Device Working, Reliable Computer w/windows Operating System (Windows 10, or later versions usually are fine) BMCC Account, Internet Access USB Flash Drive, 1 MB Storage Minimum *For Students Who Use BMCC Computer Labs or Need to Transport Files To Various Locations Criteria for Acceptable Performance Completion of all assignments and exams is required. You cannot receive a grade higher than C, if you do not complete all of the assigned modules. Students will follow the weekly schedule of work and set target dates for submitting assignments. Late Work Late work will be penalized at 50% up to 7 days, 0% credit past 7 days. Due dates are clearly stated and strictly enforced regardless of excuse, including down Internet connections. Periodic grade updates are available through the online gradebook. Assignments Grading Scale Your work will be graded for accuracy, setup, and professional appearance. Grades will be updated regularly throughout the term. 65
3 Instructor Graded Your work will be graded for accuracy, setup and professional appearance. Documents should be created using acceptable business standards. Types of error deductions will include spelling, typos, missing information, formatting, incorrect software concepts, incomplete directions, saving file incorrectly or with wrong filename, etc. It is very important to pay attention to details in your work. Proofread and review your documents many times before submitting for scoring. Points deductions are typically 5-10 points PER ERROR. Assignments graded by the instructor can only be submitted once. Final Composite Grade The course grading will be based on total points. Those final percentage grades will be based on the following scale: A 90 to 100% B 89 to 80% C 79 to 70% D 69 to 60% F 59 to 30% NC Below 30% Academic Honesty You are encouraged to work together to solve problems. However, you must complete your own work and your files should originate from you. Each student needs to be actively operating the software when completing assignments. You may not lend your storage device to another student, print for someone else, copy your storage device for another student or share files electronically in any way. Such actions are considered cheating! Plagiarism and cheating are serious offenses and will not be tolerated in this course. Students who are involved in cheating or sharing electronic or printed data with other students will either receive zero points or will receive an F for the course. This will be determined by the instructor. The student(s) will be referred to the appropriate college administrator for disciplinary action. These types of offenses are recorded on your student file. Expected Student Behavior (On-Campus Classes) Students enrolled in this course are expected to exhibit conduct considered to be acceptable in a college setting. Disruptive behavior is any type of student activity that interrupts the normal flow of information exchange in the classroom in a negative way. Examples of disruptive behavior include: cell phones, pagers, excessive talking without being recognized by the instructor, late arrival to class, argumentative behavior that extends beyond normal classroom interchange, name calling, profane or racial statements. Such disruptive behavior will not be tolerated and the instructor will request that the student leave the classroom. Readmission to the class can occur only after consultation with the instructor and the appropriate college administrator Written Communications In addition, s that contain inappropriate or profane, racial language will be reported to the Office of Instruction.
