2 LECTURE-LAB MODE: Lecture class meets T R at the times and locations listed on page 1; lab classes meet every Monday according to the schedule: Section Time 8:00-8:50 9:05-9:55 not open not open 11:15-12:05 11:15-12:05 12:20-1:10 12:20-1:10 Location 113 HTL 113 HTL 113 HTL 114 HTL 113 HTL 114 HTL The first meeting of your lab class will be Monday, January 22. Important: You must attend the Lab Class for which you are registered. You may not attend a different lab, not even on a one-time basis. You may change sections only during DROP/ADD. Lecture Class: New material and examples will be presented and as time permits, questions on homework problems will be taken. Be prepared for lecture by keeping up with the on-line assignments (einstein) and by doing the assigned homework from the section(s) covered in the previous lecture. There may be announced or unannounced quizzes in lecture class. Lab Class: During every lab, either a quiz or a test will be given. On the lab days when there is no unit test given, a quiz will be given. On quiz days, the first part of the period will be used for answering questions and the last part of the period will be used for taking the quiz. You should come to lab well prepared; lab proctors do not provide individual instruction for students who have missed lecture class; priority will be given to helping students who have class notes to reference. On test days, there is no practice time. You take the test as soon as lab begins. There will be on-line practices for the material covered on each lab test/quiz. ON-LINE PRACTICE: On-line practice is available at Attending all lectures, taking good notes, and studying those notes is essential to your success in this course. After studying for concept mastery, you will need to work the on-line practice problems. There will be a maximum of 5 attempts allowed for each on-line practice. If you are not able to finish a practice, simply QUIT the practice (don t grade it), close the browser and log out. The system will allow you to log back in to continue your practice and finish it, as long as the practice is still available, and this procedure will count as one (1) attempt only. In other words, as long as you don t grade your practice, you can always go back to it without losing an attempt. It is always a really good idea to print a copy of the practice as soon as it is available on line. It is also crucial that you memorize formulas, theorems, procedures, etc. as they are introduced, and not wait until the day before a quiz or test. To succeed in this class, it is reasonable for you to expect to spend several hours every day working on mastering concepts. To access the on-line practice, go to the einstein site (see address above) click start click Assignments choose from the drop down, 1114SP18-PL COURSE NOTES: The on-line course notes are departmental and contain problems chosen to emphasize important course material. They can be very helpful as a supplement to your lecturer s notes, as a source for obtaining notes missed due to illness, and as a source for additional practice problems. These are not the notes your instructor presents during lecture. OTHER ON-LINE INFORMATION: Use the University s CANVAS system for regular communication about this class. You should make it a habit to check CANVAS and your every day. You can access CANVAS at When there is supplementary material that you should print and bring to class, you will find it in the Course Library in Modules on CANVAS. Grades will NOT be posted on CANVAS (see POSTING GRADES on page 4). 2

3 TEST/QUIZ POLICIES: No makeup or early tests or quizzes will be given test/quiz dates and/or times will not be rescheduled; not even on a one-time basis. No test or quiz grades will be dropped. No test or quiz may be retaken. You may not begin a test or quiz and then decide not to take it; once started, it must be completed, and it counts. A test or quiz absence will be excused only if the student presents sufficient verifiable evidence of acceptable, extenuating, unavoidable circumstances. The student should bring that documentation to the lecturer within one (1) week of the student s return; the student must see the instructor IN PERSON; documentation via is not accepted. An acceptable medical excuse must state explicitly that the holder should be excused from class. Students missing class because of a family death must show evidence of the death and evidence of the relationship to the deceased. Family functions and non-university activities are not generally considered excused absences. For only one excused test absence, the Final Exam grade will be used for the missed test grade. If a student has a second test absence, then that student is advised to drop the course. The Final Exam grade cannot substitute for both unit tests. For only one excused quiz absence, no grade will be assigned to the missed quiz. For subsequent quiz absences, the student must see the instructor. The Final Exam grade minus a penalty will be assigned for only one unexcused test grade, provided the student meets with the instructor and requests this accommodation; otherwise a grade of zero will be assigned for that test. A grade of zero will be assigned for an unexcused quiz grade. TEST DATES ARE NOT SUBJECT TO CHANGE. FSU ID and sharpened pencils are needed for all tests and quizzes. CALCULATORS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED ON TESTS OR QUIZZES. Cell phones, ipods and any similar devices are NOT ALLOWED in lecture and lab. LOG IN FOR LAB: You will need to use your FSUID (the part before in your FSU address; the same login name you use for CANVAS) and your EMPLID to take tests and quizzes. Your login name is your FSUID and your password is the last five digits of your EMPLID. COMPREHENSIVE FINAL EXAM: The Final Exam is cumulative. Students will use an on-line registration program to reserve an exam time of their choice during Final Exam week. Your Final Exam will be given in one of the computer-equipped classrooms (104 HTL, 105 HTL, 113 HTL, 114 HTL, 107 MCH or 319 HCB); not necessarily in the same classroom where you have lab. The Final Exam will be given during Exam Week (April 30 May 4). You will register on-line for a final exam time. Final Exam Registration will open at 7:00 a.m. on Wed., March 28. You must schedule an exam time before 12:00 noon on Wed., April 18. During this 3-week period, you will be able to change your exam time, depending on available times. You must check your exam schedule carefully; it is the student s responsibility to choose a time that does not conflict with the exam times for their other classes, as listed in the University Exam Schedule. After final exam registration closes, changes without penalty will be made only for conflicts that involve documented changes in the exam schedule for your other classes. That is, changes will be made only if an instructor in one of your classes changes the time of the final exam from the Exam Schedule given in the University's Registration Guide, and this change conflicts with your selected MAC 1114 exam time. A penalty of 15 points will be imposed on your Final Exam grade for any other changes made after registration closes. This includes students who fail to register before the deadline, changes in travel, or because of airline ticket purchases. About a week before registration begins, a link for the on-line registration will be made available at Though available a week in advance, this URL will not open until 7:00a.m. on Wed., March 28. ATTENDANCE: Students whose names do not appear on the class roll cannot attend classes. Enrolled students are expected to attend classes, and students with excessive (excused or unexcused) absences will not be given a passing grade or a grade of I (Incomplete). You will need a package of 3 x5 index cards - lined or unlined; white or any color; but they MUST be 3 x5 (any other size or any paper torn/cut to look like a card will not be accepted). Attendance will be taken randomly throughout the semester, so you will have the opportunity to earn points that can be used to raise (if your attendance is good) your lab quiz average. Your percentage of attendance points will translate into a quiz score, and it will be averaged with your other lab quiz scores, to obtain your lab quiz average for the course. No excuses are collected for absence from lecture class; if you miss on a day when attendance was taken, you will simply have lost the points for that day. There will be opportunities to earn back missed points. 3

4 UNIVERSITY ATTENDANCE POLICY: Excused absences include documented illness, deaths in the family and other documented crises, call to active military duty or jury duty, religious holy days, and official University activities. These absences will be accommodated in a way that does not arbitrarily penalize students who have a valid excuse. Consideration will also be given to students whose dependent children experience serious illness. POSTING GRADES: For posting grades, your instructor DOES NOT use the university s CANVAS system. Instead, your grades will be made available to you through the MAC 1114 link on your instructor s webpage. Grades are usually updated about once every 2 to 3 weeks, and each time they are updated you will be notified. PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENT: This course has a participation requirement measured by attending class and completing assignments. This includes quizzes (lab or lecture), take-home assignments and attendance. Students are in danger of incurring a course grade reduction if they miss more than two (2) quizzes (lab, lecture, takehome or attendance; excused or unexcused). For each quiz missed, beyond two, a student s Final Course Average is subject to reduction by one (1) point. No exceptions. An excused absence from a quiz still counts as a missed quiz. GRADING: There will be two unit tests, 11 quizzes, and a cumulative final exam. No test, quiz or exam grades will be dropped. The numerical course grade will be assigned by the higher of Avg1 or Avg2, where, 5U + Q + 4E Avg1 = or 4U + Q + 5E Avg2 = Letter grades will be determined from numerical grades as follows: with U = test average; Q = quiz average; E = final exam grade. A = and above B+ = C+ = D = A- = B = C = D- = B- = C- = F = and below AMERICAN DISABILITIES ACT: Students with disabilities needing academic accommodations will need to: 1) register with and provide documentation to the Student Disability Resource Center (SDRC); 2) bring letters to their instructors from SDRC indicating they need, and have been certified to receive, academic accommodations. This should be done within the first week of classes. Each student must meet with his/her lecturer to discuss his/her particular situation and the available testing options. Accommodations will be provided within one week of that meeting, provided the student properly completes the registration process through CLOCKWORK. The egrade software used in this course is not fully accessible for students with visual impairments. Visually impaired students are referred to the SDRC for interim accommodations. This departmental syllabus and instructor written class materials can be made available in alternative format upon request. For more information about services available to FSU students with disabilities, contact: Student Disability Resource Center, 874 Traditions Way, 108 Student Services Building, Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL ; (voice) or (TDD). at sdrc@admin.fsu.edu or see their website, 4

5 ACADEMIC HONOR POLICY: The academic honor system is followed strictly. Students possessing unauthorized notes, using prohibited calculators, or giving/receiving unauthorized assistance on an exam will be dealt with according to FSU Honor Code policy. If you provide test details to any individual or tutoring service, then you are in violation of the Academic Honor Policy. You will be asked to give an honor pledge for every graded assignment; please take it seriously. The Florida State University Academic Honor Policy outlines the University s expectations for the integrity of students academic work, the procedures for resolving alleged violations of those expectations, and the rights and responsibilities of students and faculty members throughout the process. Students are responsible for reading the Academic Honor Policy and for living up to their pledge to... be honest and truthful and... [to] strive for personal and institutional integrity at Florida State University. The FSU Academic Honor Policy may be found at FREE TUTORING FROM FSU: Tutoring is available for this course via ACE Tutoring at the Learning Studio in the William Johnston Building; tutor@fsu.edu, , or Students should use caution when engaging the services of tutors (or tutoring services) that have no affiliation with FSU. If a tutoring service provides information or materials that violate the Academic Honor Policy, then you, by engaging that service, will be in violation of the Academic Honor Policy. LIBERAL STUDIES FOR THE 21ST CENTURY: The Liberal Studies for the 21 st Century Program at Florida State University builds an educational foundation that will enable FSU graduates to thrive both intellectually and materially and to support themselves, their families, and their communities through a broad and critical engagement with the world in which they live and work. Liberal Studies offers a transformative experience. This course has been approved as meeting the Liberal Studies requirements, and thus is designed to help you become a critical analyzer of quantitative and logical claims. In order to fulfill the State of Florida s College mathematics and computation requirement (and receive Liberal Studies credit), the student must earn a C or better in the course. LIBERAL STUDIES FOR THE 21ST CENTURY COMPETENCIES: Students will demonstrate the ability to analyze problems drawn from real-world scenarios by interpreting and evaluating data and applying appropriate mathematical, statistical, logical, and/or computational models or principles, using appropriate technology, and explaining the results. These competencies will be evaluated throughout the term on each of the two Unit Tests and on the comprehensive Final Exam. SYLLABUS CHANGE POLICY: Except for changes that substantially affect implementation of the evaluation (grading) statement, this syllabus is a guide for the course and is subject to change with advance notice. 5
