CREDIT HOURS: 4 credits PREREQUISITES: ENG 095 or appropriate placement test score COREQUISITES: None COURSE SUMMARY: This course provides a comprehensive study of the anatomy and physiology of the human body. Topics include body organization, homeostasis, cytology, histology, and the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, special senses, and endocrine systems. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of principles of anatomy and physiology and their interrelationships. HYBRID COURSE DEFINITION: A hybrid course consists of a blending of face-to-face class meetings with a portion of the class also being taught on-line. This reduces the number of days a student will meet face-to-face with an Instructor; however, the content of the course remains the same as a traditional. Certain classes will have a portion, or all, of the lecture, OR, similarly, all, or a portion of the lab, taught on-line. Should you be considering a hybrid course, please be aware that a portion of this class will require the student to have access to a computer and the internet. There may be additional fees associated with the purchase of materials necessary to complete the course.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of anatomy and physiology and their interrelationships of the following topics: 1. Body organization 2. Homeostasis 3. Cytology 4. Histology 5. Integumentary system 6. Skeletal system 7. Muscular system 8. Nervous system 9. Special senses 10. 3 SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS: Students who require special accommodations or considerations for taking exams or completing class assignments must first acquire approval through Disability Support Services (Room A215). You are responsible for scheduling exam rooms and times with Disability Support Services and the instructor. Please make arrangements at least one week in advance. N407 SCIENCE STUDY ROOM: N407 is a study room for use by all biology & chemistry students at CFCC. The room is equipped with computers with internet access, reference materials including study posters, microscopes and slides. Learning Lab Science Tutors staff the study room and are available for tutoring. You must fill out a permission form to have access to this room and to the tutors. This room is great for a quiet place to study and also for group studying as well. STUDENT I.T. HELPDESK INFORMATION: Downtown Location: L114 (lobby area near the stairwell close to Student Activities) Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Phone: StudentHelp@cfcc.edu STUDENT ACCOUNTS: Your mycfcc account is a single username and password for all of your CFCC network accounts: , WebAdvisor, Blackboard, campus computer access, and more. The account provided to you (yourusername@mail.cfcc.edu) is used for all official communication with CFCC instructors and staff. Some information will ONLY be sent by and not by postal mail, so it is very important that you check this account. This account may also be used for personal mail, but it is subject to the CFCC Acceptable Use Policy. Be sure to logout of your account in each service you may have opened ( , Blackboard, etc.) when you leave a shared computer, otherwise it is possible for the next user of the computer to access your information. BLACKBOARD (BB): Lecture outlines, lab material, articles, web page links, announcements, and test scores may be posted on my Blackboard. Please frequent BB weekly for announcements. If class does not meet due to my absence, please look for posted assignments on BB. GRADING POLICY: The course consists of three objective exams, each worth 100 points and two labs, each worth 50 points. During the semester you can obtain 10 points added to a test grade by doing a 3-5 minute teaching demonstration to the class of some an A&P topic. At the conclusion of the semester, the total number of points divided by 4 will be your final grade. All Tests are calculated the same. Therefore, to calculate your final grade, add together the scores from all your tests and labs and ANY EXTRA CREDIT AND divide by the TOTAL NUMBER BY FOUR (4). Grading scale follows that as stated in the CFCC Catalog and Student Handbook: A B C D F 0 67

EXTRA CREDIT: There will be no individual extra credit. Any extra credit will be added to the total number of points at the end of the semester. This course requires commitment from you. It may be necessary for you to limit your work schedule, your home schedule, and your course load in order for you to be successful in this course. You will earn your grade. One day my life or someone s life that I care about very much may rest in your hands. MAKE-UP POLICY: Tests may be taken early at the discretion of the instructor. If a test is taken late, there will be an automatic 10% deduction. There are no make-up medical simulation labs. ACADEMIC HONESTY: Plagiarism is using as your own the words or ideas of another, whether written or oral. When you use material from a source, you must quote or paraphrase accurately and properly cite the information. Failure to do so is considered plagiarism. Examples of plagiarism include word-for-word copying without correctly indicating that you are quoting, inaccurate quoting and paraphrasing, and incomplete or missing documentation. Purchasing a paper or copying someone else's work and submitting it as your own are also plagiarism. Any misrepresentation of the source in your writing or speaking would constitute a form of plagiarism. Whether intentional or unintentional, plagiarism is not acceptable and will result in the student being assigned a grade of zero for the assignment. ATTENDANCE POLICY: Since you are paying hard earned $$ to see me, I expect to see you!!! Students must be in attendance at least eighty (80%) percent of the clock hours of a course to receive credit for the course. (CFCC Catalog and Student Handbook). Since BIO 168 is a 96-hour course, you may miss 18 hours - not 18 class meetings. These hours include both lecture and lab hours. Exceeding the 18-hour limit will result in an automatic final grade of F. Attendance will be taken in every lecture and lab class by section numbers. You will be responsible for signing the attendance sheets for both lecture and lab. Failure to sign in will result in an absence. I FORGOT IS NOT A VALID EXCUSE! If you sign for another student who is not in attendance, you will receive a final grade of F. If you arrive at class more than 10 minutes late, or leave more than 10 minutes early, it will count as half an absence. If you cannot attend your scheduled lecture or lab class, you may attend another lecture or lab that week provided that the same material is being covered and there is an available seat for you. Attending another lecture or lab would not count against your absence. Contact me to confirm availability. If you cannot make up the missed lecture and/or lab, you will be counted absent. It is your responsibility to find out what information you missed. Therefore, it is your responsibility to get a copy of the notes and any announcements from a fellow student. There will be material discussed in every lecture and lab that is not included in the outlines. Any material discussed in lecture and lab is fair game for tests. Therefore, don t miss class!!!!

If your work schedule, family commitments, or health issues prevent you from attending class on a regular basis, a withdrawal is highly recommended. WITHDRAWALS: You are responsible for noting the deadline for withdrawal from the course. I will not turn in any withdrawal form to the registration office. This is your responsibility. You will find the deadline date in the CFCC Catalog and Student Handbook. Withdrawals will not be given once the 18 hours of absences has been exceeded. TOBACCO USE: Cape Fear Community College: is committed to providing its employees and students with a safe and healthful environment. recognizes the use of tobacco products on campus grounds is detrimental to the health and safety of students, staff, faculty and visitors. recognizes that it has the legal authority to prohibit tobacco use pursuant to G.S Therefore, Cape Fear Community College has set the following 100% tobacco free campus policy, to be implemented on August 1, Use of tobacco is prohibited by students, staff, faculty or visitors: in all campus buildings, facilities or property owned or leased by Cape Fear Community College and outside areas of the campus; on campus grounds, facilities, or in vehicles that are the property of the college; at lectures, conferences, meetings, athletic, social and cultural events held on college property; for the purposes of this policy, tobacco is defined as any type of tobacco product including, but not limited to, cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, pipes, bidis, hookahs, smokeless or spit tobacco or snuff, e-cigarettes or any product simulating smoking instruments; except at a specific location(s) on the North Campus as approved by the College President due to unsafe conditions going off-campus. CONTINGENCY PLAN: If there is an emergency and the instructor or an appropriate substitute does not meet with the class, wait fifteen minutes. Then, everyone in the class should sign a roll sheet and designate someone to take it to the Department Chair or the Executive Administrative Assistant. RELIGIOUS OBSERVANCES: Students will be allowed two days of excused absence each academic year for religious observances required by the faith of the student. These excused absences will be included in the twenty (20%) percent of allowable clock hour absences. Students are required to provide written notice of the request for an excused absence by completing the Religious Observance Absence form available in Student Development. The completed form must be submitted to the Vice President of Student Development or his/her designee a minimum of ten (10) school days prior to the religious observance. The Vice President of Student Development or his/her designee will

notify the instructor within three (3) school days of receiving the request. Students will be given the opportunity to make up any tests or other work missed due to the excused absence and should work with their instructors in advance of the excused absence to delineate how to make up the missed coursework (N.C.G.S. 115D-5). GENERAL CLASS INFORMATION: 1. Children are not allowed to attend lectures nor labs. 2. The use of cell phones is prohibited during class except for Emergency Personnel. 3. Federal Law and CFCC Policy prohibit releasing grades by or by phone. 4. Students are welcome to tape the class for their own personal use. 5. All tests and assignments are to be your own work. Cheating on either a test, assignment or quiz will result in a grade of 0 (zero) on that work. 6. All tests and test questions are the property of the CFCC Science Department. All tests will be turned in with your answer keys at the end of testing. Only your answer keys will be returned to you upon grading. 7. Most of our lab work will be working on case studies, the simulator or demonstration models. However, there may be some dissection. We will follow strict laboratory safety procedures when dissecting and performing experiments. Detailed instructions will be given prior to these labs. 8. CLOSE TOED SHOES MUST BE WORN DURING ALL LABS.

Lectures and Lab Information LECTURES: Material from the textbook is covered during each lecture period. Students are expected to read the relevant textbook chapters before the lecture. If lecture is missed, it is the responsibility of the student to get information from other students and/or Blackboard to catch up. There will be approximately 3 written tests covering lecture material. The format may include multiple-choice, fill-in, matching, short answer, identification and/or essay. These tests will be given during the regular scheduled lecture time. Grades are posted on as soon as I have them graded. LABS: Lab includes models, dissection, videos, and study guide exercises that supplement and support the lecture. Students are expected to attend and participate in all scheduled labs. Safety is of the utmost importance; therefore, all students are expected to follow proper lab procedures and act according to lab safety rules. Students will be instructed in lab safety procedures prior to each lab. Although there will not be a separate lab grade, any information covered during lab will be integrated into the lecture test on the specific section. NO MEDICAL ADVICE: The Anatomy & Physiology Instructors on staff at CFCC are educational instructors. See your doctor for medical consultations. ATTENDANCE & EVALUATION POLICY: Since this is a hybrid class, we do not meet face-to-face lecture. Therefore, there are mandatory online assignments that MUST be completed in order to pass this class. These assignments have a ZERO-TOLERANCE policy, so 100% of the online assignments, whether they are chapter questions, case studies, or critical thinking questions, MUST BE TURNED IN by the assigned time by . LATE ASSIGNMENT POLICY: If there are extenuating circumstances (alien abduction is not an excuse), late assignments will be due 10 days from the ORIGINAL due date. A possible 10% grade deduction may be given for every late assignment. Make sure that when you turn in the late assignment, you put LATE ASSIGNMENT in the subject matter with your last name and section number. DISCLAIMER: Information contained in this syllabus was, to the best knowledge of the instructor, considered correct and complete when distributed for use at the beginning of the semester. The instructor reserves the right, acting within the policies and procedures of Cape Fear Community College, to make changes in course content or instructional techniques without notice or obligation.
