1 Cleveland School of Architecture and Design at John Hay 2075 Stokes Boulevard - Cleveland, Ohio School Phone (216) School Fax (216) The primary goal of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District is to become a premier school district in the United States of America School Year: Geography Course Syllabus Semester: Second Semester, January 10 th - May 30 th, 2017 Instructor s Name: Ronald Saddler Room Number: 129 Instructor s Hours: 8:50a 3:20p; Tutoring the day prior to a test (Lunch by apt and/or Thursdays 3:20p- 4:15p) Course ID: GHA Course Description: This course investigates the interrelationships of people and the environment and various cultures and their contributions to the world. Course Supply List: Students will need the following materials for class DAILY: A 3 ring binder with dividers to organize material Pencils and/or Pens Notebook/Notebook paper Flash drive (Text book can be uploaded to this device) Textbook Title: World Geography and World Geography and Cultures by Glencoe Publishers (Also students will have access to an online textbook which will be in PDF form and available on class websites; Jupiter Grades and Mr. Saddler s Website Textbook Cost: Each student will be assigned a numbered text book to use in school and at home. Students are expected to bring their textbook to class DAILY. They will be responsible for its return and condition at the end of the course. If a textbook is not returned or is damaged, the student will be charged around $80 for a replacement. 1

2 Course Goals: At the conclusion of this course, students will be informed and involved citizens in a world that is becoming increasingly interdependent and interconnected. This course builds on students understanding of geography and spatial thinking. Contemporary issues are explored through the lens of geography. In addition to understanding where physical and cultural features are located and why those features are located as they are, students examine the implications of these spatial arrangements. Course Objectives: By the end of the semester the students will be able to: Develop social studies skills such as interpreting data on maps, graphs and charts. Create and analyze maps, graphs and charts. Define necessary EOC/Common Core Vocabulary Write short responses and opinions on a variety of social studies prompts Refine computer skills for submission of papers, projects, and academic work and as a supplemental resource. Demonstrate knowledge of historic events and their connection to current affairs through the use of brief writing prompts. Demonstrate proficiency by passing the Ohio Social Studies standardized End of Course Geography assessments. Class Expectations: Materials needed daily include: textbook, binder, paper and pens/pencils Class Procedures and Policies: Students are expected to attend class daily and be prompt, prepared and respectful to teachers, visitors and peers. Students will be subjected to a detention if they are late for class. Students should be seated promptly at 8:00 am for their 1 st period class. ANY electronic device, seen or heard, will be confiscated and turned over to Ms. Maxey; Technology will be used during class at appropriate times and those times will be CLEARLY communicated my Mr. Saddler. Students may NOT use electrical outlets to charge their devices. Eating and Drinking is not permitted in class. Passes to the bathroom will not be given during the first 10 minutes or the final 10 minutes of class. RESPECT the rights, thoughts, questions and ideas of your peers. Social studies topics can make for good discussion, and everyone's opinion is valuable; Please DO NOT interrupt others while they are speaking. Display responsibility and organizational skills by handing in completed work on time. 2

3 Grading: (Please notice the score % requirements for letter grades) A % B 80-89% C 70-79% D 60-69% F 60-0% I Incomplete Method of Evaluation: Point System: (i.e. WW II test = 100pts) Tests and projects =60% Class assignments= 20% Homework=20% *Just because a student completes all class assignments and homework doesn t mean they will have an A! Studying, reviewing for tests is CRITICAL to a student passing with an acceptable grade! Assignments: Chapter notes should be written and organized in a three ring binder. Notes may be collected AT RANDOM throughout the week for a grade; Classroom assignments, homework and class participation will also count for 20% of the course grade. All assignments, notes and projects are due at the beginning of class or they will be subject to a 50% penalty. Deadlines will be strictly enforced. A name must be printed on all submitted assignments in order to receive credit. Tests/Quizzes: Tests will be given after EVERY completed chapter; Possibly ONCE a week! A missed exam will only be taken after school on a scheduled make up day. Please be aware that tests will count for 60% of the course grade. A comprehensive final examination will be given at the end of each semester and will be weighted as TWO test scores. All testing requires students to complete their own work and academic dishonesty (cheating) will not be tolerated on any level! We agreed to a testing schedule as follows: Monday: Math and Music/Choir Tuesday: No Tests Wednesday: Science Thursday: Health/Phys Ed and World Languages *Friday: Social Studies and English Language Arts Projects: Projects will be announced throughout the semester and will be accompanied with a backwards-mapping guide and rubric to help the students complete their projects. Projects will be given with advanced notice and will require the students to provide an oral, written or power point presentation of material covered as it relates to real-life applications. 3

4 Participation/Attendance Requirements: Attendance is required! If you miss a class it is THE STUDENT S responsibility to cover the material missed from that class. Please check Mr. Saddler s web page DAILY for material missed during class. (i.e. Missing 1 day of block classes is like missing 2 days of regular classes and this is just one class!) Make-up Work: Students are responsible for notifying teacher of a missed test or assignment. It is the student s responsibility to see the teacher AFTER school IMMEDIATELY following an excused absence. No make-up work will be given for unexcused absences. Please check Mr. Saddler s web page DAILY for material missed during class. Technology: Technology will be integrated in EVERY lesson and will aid the students in becoming more independent learners, comprehending the content and becoming tech savvy. Both students and parents will have access to their individual data online and through apps. These are the three websites that we will use and they include: (Mr. Saddler website) Jupitergrades.com (student grade book, class materials) (web site specific to A&D) Extra Credit (Enrichment Credit): Extra Credit/ Enrichment Credit opportunities will be offered throughout the semester. Please be aware that extra credit points will not take the place of missed or incomplete work. I highly encourage students to take advantage of these opportunities early and often! Disciplinary Policy and Procedures: The protocol below will be used if students choose to not follow the rules and regulations of School of Architecture and Design at John Hay. 1 st Offense: Verbal warning that will be documented. 2 nd Offense: Parent will be called and student will be assigned a Tuesday detention after school. If the student cuts the detention, they will be assigned an office detention with his/her administrator 3 rd Offense: Call home to parents/conference 4 th Offense: Conference with Principal Tardy: When a student has been tardy three times, he/she will receive a detention. 4
