4 PG Module 1: Child Safety in Boys & Girls Clubs : Get with the Program Session Lesson Titles This session contains the following lessons: Program Overview Effective Implementation LESSON 1: TORCH CLUB PROGRAM OVERVIEW Lesson Introduction Lesson Objective What is? History is a powerful vehicle for developing leadership skills and promoting good character among its members and throughout the Club. When members display the behaviors associated with good character, they become positive role models who can influence their peers in ways that Club staff cannot. At the end of this lesson you will be able to identify what the program is and how it supports character and leadership development. A is a small group of Club members engaging in programs and activities agreed upon, developed and implemented by these members themselves. offers positive experiences for youth between the ages of who, though not yet real teens, are too mature to interact comfortably with 6 to 10 year olds. The first s were chartered in 1970 to address the developmental needs of young people. Years ago, childhood was thought to begin in the first grade and extend through the eighth grade. Adolescence began with puberty, at about age 13 for girls and 14 or 15 for boys. In the past several decades; however, the years of middle childhood have been shortened and youth have begun to mature earlier, exhibiting teen attitudes, teen styles and teen behavior earlier than other generations. Symbol The symbol of the torch is representative of the leadership and courage personified in the American spirit. Through participation in the prorgam, members can become caring, competent leaders who embody the values that are basic to the American Heritage. Focus Areas A program incorporates members suggestions, organized activities, national programs and special events to offer members a strong array of experiences in four program areas. The foundation for implementing a comprehensive program starts with these focus areas: Service to Club and Community Participant s Guide: Page 4 Boys & Girls Clubs of America

Stand-up for your beliefs about right and wrong. o Promise-Keeping Keep your word and honor your commitments. Repay your debts. Return what you borrow. o Loyalty Stand by, support and protect your family, friends, employers, community and country. 6 PG Module 1: Child Safety in Boys & Girls Clubs : Get with the Program Effective Leaders Worksheet 1. Identify a leader the entire group admires: 2. List all the characteristics that made this individual an effective leader: Lesson Summary A successful program allows young people to meet their basic personal and social needs. They will build the skills and capacities needed later in life. An effective program will strengthen a young person s sense of identity and their ability to contribute to the later world. LESSON 2: EFFECTIVE TORCH CLUB IMPLEMENTATION Lesson Introduction Starting a program requires that a staff member or committed volunteer be assigned as the advisor. The strength of s centers around the relationship between members and their advisor. Running a successful program will involve the group brainstorming and sharing decision making. Getting the group to work as a successful team takes time, commitment and patience. Group development is a continuous process of guiding and helping youth with issues and challenges of the world. Lesson Objective A Formula for Impact Targeted Program Good Character and Citizenship Priority Outcome At the end of this lesson you will be able demonstrate how to effectively implement a program with impact. A Program is one of Boys & Girls Clubs of America s targeted programs designed to help members demonstrate good character and citizenship. Good character and citizenship is one of Formula for Impact s three priority outcomes. According to the Josephson Institute, some 30 percent of youth report being involved in bullying; 60 percent of high school students admit to cheating on tests. Negative influences permeate our culture, and young people need guidance to develop their character and moral compass. Therefore, we want to provide opportunities for our members to treat others with respect, demonstrate civility, serve others at the Club or in the community, and understand their rights and responsibilities as citizens. Formula for Impact s Outcome-Driven Club Experience How to Recruit Members Recruitment: Personal One-on-One Approach Recruit a Large Enough Group The following Formula for Impact indicators will help us know if our members are demonstrating good character and citizenship, when they are: Making contributions to their Club and community; Avoiding involvement with the juvenile justice system; and, Demonstrate conflict resolution skills. While s are a targeted program, the other three components of the Formula for Impact s Outcome-Driven Club Experience, are very important to their success: Implementing high-yield activities Ensuring each member is experiencing the Five Key Elements for Positive Youth Development Maintaining regular attendance In recruitng members for the, advisors should be sure to seek the assistance of other staff members to help identify potential members. The boys and girls identified should be Club members ages who have leadership potential, attend the Club regularly and participate in a variety of Club programs and activities. Please note, recruitment should be open and not limited to the most popular members in the Club. One way of conducting recruitment is by using a personal, oneon-one approach. To achieve this recruitment idea staff must: Convey enthusiasm, personal involvement and commitment. Emphasize how prospective members can contribute to the program. Explain to potential members how the program can help them personally; emphasizing the skills they can learn and the friendships they can develop. Cite examples of those who achieved personal and group goals through their involvement in s. Ask members to assist in identifying prospective members. The next step is to recruit enough members to operate the program effectively; a minimum of six members with a maximum of 15 is a chartering requirement. Establish meeting attendance requirements for continuing membership and participation in special events. For example, prospective members must attend three consecutive meetings to qualitfy for membership. Participant s Guide: Page 7 Boys & Girls Clubs of America

8 PG Module 1: Child Safety in Boys & Girls Clubs : Get with the Program Identify Potential Members Within the Club environment there are some other ways to identify potential members: Seek the assistance of other staff members Identify Club members ages with leadership potential Identify Club members who attend regularly and participate in a variety of Club programs and activities Now that you have an idea of how to recruit in your group for potential members, it s time to plan the first meeting. The success of the first meeting often can determine the success of the program. Although the advisor s primary role is one of providing guidance and support, early meetings will require an advisor to take the lead. The group needs to get acquainted, meet the advisor, establish friendships and have fun! Exercise: Ice Breakers This exercise is designed to get you started developing an ice breaker for your first meeting. This exercise should have helped you determine the best way to start your first meeting. Keep in mind it is always a good opportunity to involve Club members who attend regularly in planning the meeting. You now have an idea of an ice breaker you can use for your first meeting. Remember your members are also creative so allow them to come up with an ice-breaker they might know and like. As staff, you should decide when and how soon the Club can move to implementing a quality program with impact. Staff must decide how prepared the Club is to implement a Torch Club program. Once the decision is made to conduct the Torch Club program, the first meeting should be where you get your young people excited about being a member. A successful program can lead to increased participation of Club members ages Electing Officers Another area that is critical to the success of your program is the election of officers. There are four officer positions that need to be filled. They are: President Vice President Secretary Treasurer Participant s Guide: Page 8 Boys & Girls Clubs of America

9 PG Module 1: Child Safety in Boys & Girls Clubs : Get with the Program To get these positions filled it will take some planning. It is important to create excitement around members having debates, lectures, or other activities they might want to use to increase their chances of winning. Exercise: Ideas for Electing Officers This exercise is designed to help you begin to plan your Torch Club election of officers. Ideas for Electing Officers Worksheet Develop a list of creative ways members who are interested in becoming officers can create campaigns, present speeches, and conduct elections. Campaigns Speeches Elections Now you have an idea of what goes into creating excitement around election of officers. It is important that during the campaign staff show great interest, as well as encourage excitement from the remaining members in the.
