1 School Jobs Kindergarten Unit: 2 Lesson: 2 Suggested Duration: 2 days Lesson Synopsis: Students will learn about the people in the school community, identify their jobs, job descriptions, and locations of those jobs within the school. They will also learn how these jobs contribute to meeting the needs of the school community. TEKS: K.7 Economics. The student understands the importance of jobs. The teacher may choose to have actual pictures of the school workers so that students identify more easily who the workers are. 2. Notify school workers of school tour date and time. INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES Instructional Procedures ENGAGE Day 1 The teacher will ask students to describe the people who help them each day at school. Allow time for students to turn and talk and encourage students to work together to name the job that each of the people do that they are discussing. As students identify a person who works at the school, begin a web on chart paper with simple illustrations, labels or a description. EXPLORE Show students pictures or clip art of additional people not mentioned in the engagement activity who also work at the school. Encourage students to discuss who the pictures might represent and describe what their job responsibilities are. Ask the students what types of technologies help these people do their job. Once students have had the opportunity to explore and discuss, add the remaining workers to the web that was started in the engagement activity. The teacher will take the class on a tour of the school to identify the various workers that help the students each day. Briefly stop and meet with each person and discuss where each person works within the school community to build background knowledge for the following lessons. Have the students ask what types of technologies help these people accomplish their tasks. Notes for Teacher NOTE: 1 Day = 30inutes Suggested time: 1/3 Day Teacher may discuss with the class or in groups. Clip art may be used as a substitute for the simple drawings on the web. Teacher Resource: School Workers Suggested time: 2/3 Day School Workers: librarian, principal, custodian, classroom teacher, cafeteria worker, secretary, nurse, counselor, bus driver, music teacher, art teacher, physical education teacher, computer teacher, etc. Possible technologies: computers, TV/DVD, intercom system, projection systems, etc. Teacher Resource: List of Possible School Workers Notify the people that you plan to stop and talk with on the tour ahead of time so that they are prepared to give a brief description of their job and where the location of the job mainly takes place. Add pictures and descriptions to the web of school workers. ELABORATE The teacher will facilitate a discussion about what the school community would be like without the people who work at the various jobs. Example: What would our school be like if there were no custodians? EVALUATE Locate school workers on a school map and describe the person s job. After studying school jobs, descriptions, responsibilities, and how these jobs meet needs in the school community, the students will identify three pictures (digital photos or clip art) of school workers, where they work in the school, their job responsibilities, and how they help meet the needs of the school. Suggested time: 1/3 Day If possible, take digital photos of each school worker as you meet them on the tour. These pictures may be used for future lessons and may be added to the Teacher Resource: School Workers Web. Suggested time: 1/6 Day Suggested time: 1/2 Day If students are able, have the students write the description of the school worker.
