This course provides the opportunity for students to learn the fundamentals of spreadsheet applications. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of a spreadsheet program that allows them to organize data, complete calculations, make decisions, graph data and develop professional looking spreadsheets. PRE-REQUISITES: None Minimum Technical Requirements: Students should meet the general and/or course specific technical skills required for the course such as the ability to log into Falcon Online to use the discussion boards, assignments dropboxes, and quizzes; skills to use an Internet Browser for research and course specific software such as the ability to create, save and upload Word and Excel files to Falcon Online; and log into FalconMail with the basic skills to send an attachment with an .

If you buy your book online, please allow sufficient time to receive it before class begins. You will also need Internet access, Microsoft Excel 2016, and Microsoft Access. Daytona State College has computers on all campuses with high-speed Internet access and Excel and Access software. You will spend a significant amount of time each week working on Excel and accessing our online classroom. New College Withdrawal Policy Students who stop attending this class will be withdrawn from the class and receive a final grade of W1 (Withdrawn). Attendance includes participating in online or face-to-face environments as required. CLASS FORMAT & REQUIRED SKILLS FOR SUCCESS IN THIS COURSE: The course is designed to allow the student to develop skills in the application of Microsoft Excel computer software. Students will develop those skills by working through chapter content in which the student will complete tasks per the text instructions using related student data files. Files completed as a result of working through the chapter content will be submitted to a OST2852 1/2018 Page 2 of 13

3 designated drop box. Students will also meet course objectives by completing and submitting designated Indepented Challenge assignments to a drop box. The course includes a distance learning component. This course is designed to provide you with various tools by which to meet the course objectives. You will participate in different forms of interaction with your instructor and fellow students with the convenience of working in your own surroundings much of the time. All assignments are designed to meet the Student Learning Outcomes of this course. Online interaction is encouraged. Our online classroom component is provided and serviced by Falcon Online STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: At the end of the course the student should be prepared to: 1. Apply concepts of an electronic spreadsheet software program in business situations. 2. Create spreadsheets utilizing formulas, functions, charting, data analysis, linking files, formatting and editing features. 3. Utilize data management features to sort data, use multiple worksheets in a workbook and protect and unprotect worksheets. 4. Produce spreadsheets by completing exercises based on an illustrated approach that facilitates learning through examples. 5. Apply the knowledge learned to case studies involving real world situations, and even evaluate the most effective spreadsheet for the situation. LEARNING METHODOLOGY: The instructor will guide the students in the classroom and in an active online learning environment and each student is expected to follow this guidance to influence other classmates in a positive manner. MODULES and ASSIGNMENTS: This course is organized around Modules. Students will read Microsoft Excel 2016 textbook and complete the steps in the modules to build skills. The completed files will be submitted for points. The chapter assignments in each module are designed to develop thinking skills as well as information processing skills. The instructor will evaluate the chapter exercise assignments. OST2852 1/2018 Page 5 of 13

6 There are four (4) Modules with assignments to be submitted. Lessons are located in the body of the text. You should proceed through the Module and submit the files that are designated on the Class Schedule. Assignments should be uploaded to the Assignments Dropbox on or before the due date. Each Module is worth 225 points for a total of 900 points. When you are required to save a file before you complete a lesson, you should save the file per the instructions and continue on with the lesson. Do not skip any of the text material! Assignments will be graded for accuracy and professionalism. Late assignments will be penalized 30% of points available (no exceptions). Assignments will not be accepted after May 7. Handling of assignments: Assignments are completed using Microsoft 2016 Excel. Students work through each assigned chapter creating documents and ensuring accuracy. Documents are then uploaded to the Florida Online class shell using the Assignments dropboxes. Modules and Assignments: As you work through each Module, you will be creating the presentation which will be submitted to the Assignments dropbox. Please see your Class Schedule of Assignments for the page # and due date for each assigment. Proceed through the Chapter and submit files that are designated on the assignment list. Lessons should be uploaded to Assignments Dropbox on or before the due date. When you are required to save a presentation before you complete a lesson, you should save the presentation per the instructions in the text unless a specific presentation name is required on the Assignment Sheet. DO not skip any of the text material! Lessons and projects will be graded for accuracy and professionalism. INCOMPLETE GRADE POLICY: A grade of I may be issued only when a student who is passing the course but who, for valid and unforeseen reasons, is not able to complete the course requirements within the semester. In order for a student to receive an "I" grade, the student must have completed a minimum of 70% of the graded course work with a passing grade. The incomplete work must be made up before the middle of the next major semester. I grades automatically convert to F grades if the make-up requirements are not met and the appropriate grade change is not submitted by the deadline as published in the College Catalog. COURSE EVALUATION: The instructor reserves the right to alter the grade structure and modify assignments, including, but not limited to, adding assignments, and graded discussions. 7 GRADING CRITERIA: COURSE GRADING TOTAL POINTS Discussion (1 100 points each) 100 Modules Total Points Possible 1000 Grading Policy: Your final grade will be based on the following point system. Letter grades will be earned based on the accumulation and successful completion of the following amount of points: A = points B+ = points B = points C+ = points C = points D+ = points D = points F = below 600 points Students must receive a grade of C or better in all courses to meet BAS degree completion requirements. ONLINE PROTOCOLS Protocols are the correct procedures for doing things. We need them for this class so that everyone knows what is expected of them, and so that everyone plays by the same rules. Virtual Classroom Expectations. The following ground rules will help your work in this course to go much more smoothly. Please carefully review these expectations and follow them. 1. Academic integrity will be appraised according to the student academic behavior standards outlined in the Daytona State College Student Handbook. Keep up with the reading. Make sure you keep up with your online discussions and utilize our online classroom s tools. 2. Work with others. You are encouraged to form study groups (online and/or in person), and participate in the Graded Discussion Forum. 3. Network Acceptable Use Policy: Be certain to familiarize yourself with the College's policies governing the usage of your online account. You must view this document located at News, from your instructor, and discussion forums When you sign into the classroom, check the class news on the front page. 8 1. Check the News, read all discussion posts and check your every time you sign in. You should sign in at least five days a week. 2. Be patient. Do not expect an immediate response when you send a message. Generally, two days is considered a reasonable amount of time to receive a reply. 3. Always put OST 2852 in the subject line and your FULL NAME in the body of the message. 4. Be courteous and considerate. Being honest and expressing your position thoroughly is very important, but being considerate of others online is just as important as in the classroom. 5. Make every effort to be clear. Online communication lacks the nonverbal cues that fill in much of the meaning in face-to-face communication. 6. Do not use ALL CAPS. This is considered shouting and the message is very hard to read. Check spelling, grammar, and punctuation (you may want to compose in word processing software then cut and paste the message into the discussion or ). 7. Break up large blocks of text into paragraphs and use a blank line between paragraphs. 8. If you have a question regarding the course material, post the question in the Discussion Forum under the appropriate chapter/topic. Other students will appreciate seeing the question and your instructor s answer. Students are encouraged to respond to other students questions. Learning by teaching is a powerful tool. Please do not send your instructor related to the course content. That is the purpose of the Discussion Forum. It takes the place of classroom discussion. 9. Never assume that your can be read by no one except yourself; others may be able to read or access your . Never send or keep anything that you would not mind seeing on the evening news. 10. Please keep all postings professional. Correct grammar and spelling are an important part of the business environment. Review your comments before you post them. Write as though you were sending the correspondence to an officer of your company. Viruses A virus can spell disaster. Your use of a reputable anti-virus program is a requirement for participation in this course. Also, back up your files. Excuses such as My hard drive crashed My modem doesn't work My printer is out of ink are today's equivalents of My dog ate my homework. While these events do occur and are inconvenient when they do, they are not valid reasons for failing to submit your work on time. 9 1. Completion dates for assignments can be found on this syllabus under Class Schedule. Your assignments should be uploaded to ASSIGNMENTS DROPBOX on or before the due date. If you do not have access to Excel 2016 and/or Microsoft Access from home, find a computer with this program or go to any Daytona State College campus to use the computer lab. 2. Graded Discussions have an opening date and a closing date. Postings before or after these dates are automatically removed from the discussion board. 3. Any assignment required in the course must be completed on or before the designated due date or you will receive a late submission penalty. 4. Please practice safe computing by having a virus detection program loaded on your computer that checks for viruses on , attachments, documents, etc. 5. Typing your full name at the top of the body of the (required for all assignments) is the same as signing your name. Your name should also be at the top of any Word or Excel document attached. Always put your course number, OST 2852 on the subject line of an e- mail and your full name in the body of the message. Hours of operation vary so please contact the ASC you plan on attending for their hours of operation. WITHDRAWAL POLICY: The last day to withdraw from this course is April 24. Withdrawal Process: Students can withdraw from this class prior to the date listed in the Academic Calendar. It is not necessary to have approval from the instructor to withdraw from the course, but you should discuss the situation with the instructor prior to any action. Many times your issues and concerns can be resolved with communication. You should also check with the Office of Financial Aid to determine how this withdrawal might affect your current and future aid eligibility. Before beginning assignments, save the data files at a location of your choice. You will see that the data files are located under the CONTENT area. (If you do save zip files, you must unzip the files (extract) before you access th e files in the assignment.) PLEASE BE PATIENT!. Work through each page of the textbook methodically. If you find that the instructions aren t working correctly, that just means that a step was skipped, easy to do. So back up a few steps, or restart an assignment. As you work through the text, you will become more familiar with the content of the ribbon and other requirements in the instructions. You have due dates for each module lesson file to be saved and submitted to the Assignments dropbox. This is a skillbuilding class in which you will be building your skills weekly. Greater success can be earned in a software class if the lessons are completed consistently with no gaps in time. The DUE DATE is the LAST DATE for each assignment. Please work ahead, if possible.
