17 The Close Text Exams English Literature exams no longer permit students to take clean copies of their studied texts into the exam hall It is vital that students begin to learn key quotations for the texts from the very start of year 10 5 key quotations for each main character (from across the whole plot) and 10 for each main theme Front and back cover of exercise books Cue cards Posters/ notes stuck on walls Regular quizzing

18 Assessment Students will complete formal in-class assessments throughout the year. Students will also sit Language and Literature PPEs in the summer of year 10 and then twice in Year 11. They will receive feedback using WWW - What went well EBW - Even better when Students are expected to respond to feedback in a thorough and thoughtful manner using MRI space My Response Is Students will be graded using the new GCSE 1-9 criteria

19 Homework Students should expect to be set one piece of written English homework a week Homework should take approximately 45 minutes to complete In addition to homework set, it is important that students spend time reading back through class notes at the end of each lesson, paying particular attention to key quotations and terminology

20 Show My Homework Homework will be set on SMHW so you can check if any homework has been set yourself. Please check regularly for updates.

Ensure students are completing homework thoroughly Encourage your child to read regularly students need to be reading a wide range of fiction (exploring a multitude of genres) and non-fiction texts Discuss what students have been learning, help them revise quotations for each text studied

42 How can you make a difference? Your involvement can make an enormous difference the difference between 4s and 5s and 7s and 8s Parental support is vital to a child s academic success. When the school and parents are working together it will lead to stronger results. The good news is that you don t have to be an expert
