1 French 2 Pelham High School Courtney Farley cfarley@pelhamcityschools.org room A101 Course Description: French 2 is a continuation and refinement of the skills learned in French 1. It completes the basic survey of French grammar begun in the first year. Reading and writing actively continues along with greater emphasis on listening and speaking. Grammar concepts are studied in depth and practiced. Study of the various aspects of French culture and geography continues. Extensive memorization will be required at each level of language learning. Course work abides by the Alabama State Course of Study For Modern Languages Level II Course Requirements: Students will be required to use the Google Classroom site regularly to access notes for class, as well as to complete homework and classwork assignments. This class is very vocabulary and grammar heavy. In order to alleviate some of the study burden on the students, I will routinely post links and send out reminders about Quizlets, a virtual flashcard study tool, that tests for meaning, as well as spelling and also has an option to pronounce words. Tests will be given approximately every two weeks and quizzes will be given on alternating weeks, to help students keep pace. Because this is a language, demonstrating listening comprehension as well as speaking ability is crucial. Participation in class will be taken as a grade for each nine weeks. Classroom Expectations: Progressive Discipline plan Observe and follow all rules outlined in the Pelham PRIDE book as well as the Student Handbook Classwork and Participation Class activities are designed to help you practice the French language, so it is essential that you participate in these. It may be intimidating, but remember we are all here to learn from each other, and I am here for YOU. I am happy to help, so don't be afraid to ask and don't be afraid to speak French. Failure to participate will impact your grade in this class. Participation is counted as a grade in my class. Homework procedures & expectations You will have homework in this class, but occasionally, you will have the opportunity to work on it at the end of class. Use your time wisely. Late work policy - Any work that is turned in after the due date, will be counted as late and may only be counted for a maximum of 50% of the original point value. You will have a two week window to turn in late work. After two weeks has passed, zero credit will be given. If you are absent, your work must be turned in within 3 days of your return to school to be counted as on time, after that, the late work policy will go into effect. Attendance Policy: This class moves quickly, so each day will bring something that you cannot afford to miss. In addition, your class participation and class work grades will be affected by your attendance. If you are absent it is your responsibility to get your make-up work. Please come to class on time, and be seated and prepared to work when the bell rings. If you miss, you will be able to check the website and watch class via an educreations link. Grading Procedures:
2 Grades will be based on total points earned on assignments. Tests, quizzes, classwork and homework will be given a grade based on the amount of points earned out of possible points. Participation is vital to learning a foreign language, so students will receive a grade for their participation. I will give a point on the ClassDojo app each time a student participates in class (answer a question, volunteer for an activity, etc.) I will tally up each student s individual participation points to determine his/her participation grade based on possible points earned by the class as a whole. Grades in INow will be updated each week, as necessary, in order to reflect each student s current grade. This class will follow Exam Exemption Policies as laid out by the PHS administrators in the Panther PRIDE handbook. Make-up Work Procedures: If you need to make up a quiz or test, please see me to schedule a time that works well for the both of us. If you miss a classwork or homework assignment due to an absence, it is your responsibility to have the assignment turned in within three days of your return to school, unless otherwise approved by me. Scheduling for make-up work is your responsibility. Digital Procedures: Personal devices may be used during class to study vocabulary on quizlet with teacher permission and supervision only. Please adhere to the PHS digital policy Students will be expected to use the Google Classroom site to keep up with class assignments and notes. I will use the Remind app to send out announcements to students and parents who sign up using the information provided. Textbook: McDougal Littell Discovering French Nouveau 2 Blanc by Valette/Valette Materials and Supplies Needed: 3-ring binder (preferably 1.5 in) Loose-leaf paper Pencils (These are best for a foreign language class. If you prefer to use a pen, it must be blue or black ink, and I would also recommend bringing white out.) In order to provide instructional supplies for the classroom, the Foreign Language Department is requesting a fee of $10.00 per student. Checks should be made payable to Pelham High School. You may also pay this fee online via the school website. The deadline for this fee is October 1, There are certain classroom items that cannot be purchased with fee money. These items are necessary to promote good health. I am asking that each student bring ONE of the following: KLEENEX (This is THE most necessary students really go through them!) Disinfectant wipes (Used to wipe down desks.) Hand Sanitizer (This usually lasts a long time so we don t need too many bottles) Band aids (Just one or two boxes will get us through the year)
