3 ELECTIVE INFORMATION Gateway to Technology (7 TH & 8 th grade) This is a computer based, robotics and engineering class which emphasizes hands-on experiences in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). MUST FILL OUT AN APPLICATION Will NOT earn Carnegie Unit Exploratory Spanish (7 th grade) Requires a B or better in 6 th grade ELA and Mastery on ELA state tests. Spanish I (8 th grade) Must have an overall C average in 7 th grade English. Must have taken Exploratory Spanish in 7 th grade

4 NEW 8 TH GRADE ELECTIVES Journey to Careers Students will: Participate in career exploration activities Learn about postsecondary options available Access and utilize different types of career information Keyboarding Applications This course is designed to teach students keyboarding skills, from the basics of typing to formatting formal papers

5 CARNEGIE UNITS Carnegie units are the credits awarded for successful completion of high school courses. ALL 8 th grade electives are Carnegie unit courses EXCEPT Gateway to Technology and Study Skills

6 CARNEGIE UNITS If your student takes a Carnegie Unit course, both semester grades (not the year average) will show on the high school transcript Example: 1 Semester (1/2 year) = 0.5 credit 80%- Classwork 20%- Semester Exam

7 TRANSCRIPT CP = # of credit pursued CE = # of credits earned

8 GPA Carnegie units earned in junior high will not be used to determine class rank, but will be calculated into overall Grade Point Average (GPA) GPA The average of all Carnegie unit courses per semester, using letter grades. On a 4.0 scale, an A receives 4 points, B = 3 points, C = 2 points and a D = 1 point.

9 ATTENDANCE POLICY FOR CARNEGIE UNIT COURSES Credit WILL NOT be awarded if your student misses more than five (5) days of nonexempted excused absences, unexcused absences, and/or suspensions per semester.

10 ATTENDANCE POLICY FOR CARNEGIE UNIT COURSES Seat time Recovery Requirement Students in danger of failing due to excessive absences may be allowed to make up missed seat time held outside of the regular school day. The makeup sessions must be completed before the end of the current semester for students enrolled in high school credit courses.
