1 1. To create an assignment for peer review, log into EduCat, click into your course, and Turn editing on. 2. Scroll to the section you want the peer review workshop to be displayed. Click on Add an activity or resource. 3. Scroll down and choose Workshop from the list, then click Add. You can read about the purpose and elements of the activity (or resource in the right column). 4. Fill in the requested information. Give the Workshop a name and a Description (you can choose to display the description with the checkbox). Fields marked with an * are required. Page 1

2 5. Grade Settings: The Grading strategy indicates the method for calculating the grade. The default (and recommended) strategy is Accumulative. Select Comments if you don t want to score the workshop. A workshop includes two parts. The Grade for submission is the grade the student earns on his assignment from the instructor, and the Grade for assessment is the grade the student receives for assessing their peers. You can determine how much each of these activities are worth and if the grade belongs in one of your grading categories. 6. Submission Settings: Include the Instructions for submission that students need in order have their work be peer reviewed. If desired, indicate if there are a maximum number of attachments, allowed files types, and size restrictions. Also indicate if Late Submissions are allowed. NOTE: Allowing for late submissions will impact the workshop process! Page 2

3 7. Assessment Settings: Provide Instructions for the assessment and indicate if Selfassessment is to be used. 8. Feedback: Overall feedback mode allows you to chose if reviewers are able and/or required to provide overall feedback. You can choose number of attachments, file types, and size of feedback files. Include a Conclusion to wrap up the activity. 9. Example submissions: Choose if you would like to provide examples and if interaction with them is voluntary or mandatory. 10. Availability: Enable the opening and deadline dates for the submissions, as well as for the assessment. You may choose the Switch to the next phase after the submission deadline. The phases can not overlap. It is suggested to manually switch the phase to better deal with late submissions. Page 3

4 11. Make additional settings as needed, then Click Save and display. 12. After the initial setup, clicking on the item will bring you to this Phase Dashboard. The highlighted section indicates the Phase currently active. The icons provide you with information on what still needs to be completed. Not complete Complete Partially complete Information 13. By clicking on the description of the task, you will be taken to the setting screen to complete that task. Complete the required task and Click Save and display to return to the Phase Dashboard. Complete this process for any Not complete or partially complete steps. Page 4

5 14. Edit assessment form: When you click on the partially complete Edit assessment form link, you will need to fill in the aspects on which the student should rate their peers submissions. Each Aspect should have a description, point value/grade, and weight (if desired). You may add more Aspects, if needed. Preview/Student View This will correspond to what the students later see when providing a grade and comments for their peers. 15. Allocate submissions: In this step you choose how submissions are reviewed. -Manual allocation: forces you to manually match participant submissions with the reviewers. -Random allocation: Allows you to choose the number of reviews by submission or by reviewer. -Scheduled allocation: Uses the phase dates in the settings for the workshop and allows you to set the allocation settings. 6 16. When you are complete with the set up phase you must click on the lightbulb to move to the next phase -- Otherwise students will receive a message that they need to wait. Preview/Student View 17. When you move to the next phase you will be reminded of the steps and asked to Continue. 18. In the submission phase, students can submit their assignments. Please remind students that deadlines are VERY important. Random and Scheduled Allocations rely on STRICT deadlines. If deadlines are not met, you will need to manually reallocate editing responsibilities. Page 6

7 19. As students turn in their assignments, you can view the details (scroll down on the Phase Dashboard page). 20. During this phase, you may update your allocation method. 1 2 Manual Allocation allows you to choose the reviewer (student who reviews Bugs Bunny s paper) and the reviewee (the paper Bugs gets to review) 1 2 As you update the manual allocations, they are reflected in the chart. 8 21. When you are complete with the Submission phase you must click on the lightbulb to move to the next phase (or if you have passed the deadline and had selected Switch to the next phase after the submission deadline in the initial set up. Use the information provided to make your decisions or manually allocate as needed. 22. When you move to the next phase you will be reminded of the steps and asked to Continue. 23. In the Assessment phase, students will Assess all the assignments they had been allocated. Preview/Student View Page 8

9 24. As students complete the assessments, you can view the details (scroll down on the Phase Dashboard page). 25. When students are complete with the Assessment phase you must click on the lightbulb to move to the next phase. 26. You will again be asked to confirm that you want to Continue to the next phase. 27. In the Grading evaluation phase you can provide YOUR assessment by clicking on each student s paper and use the same aspect criteria the students used to assess and provide feedback. Page 9

10 28. Review the Comparison of assessments. Use a Strict to Lax scale to see how similar assessments should be to receive higher grades. Re-Calculate Grades after choosing. 29. When you are complete with the Grading evaluation phase you must click on the lightbulb to move to the last phase. 30. When you move to the last phase you will be reminded that this will calculate and display grades to students. When ready, click Continue. 31. Students can see their grades in the Gradebook or by clicking on the Workshop from the main page. They can review the feedback and individual (anonymous) assessments by clicking on Submit your work.
