(etext or Hard Copy) Calculator: graphing or scientific You need to bring your text and your calculator to every class and recitation meeting. Online homework software: MyStatLab/MyMathLab comes with text. Course ID: GRADING: Your overall course grade will be based on the following percentages. CATEGORY PERCENTAGE OF GRADE Homework / Quizzes 20% Exams 55% Comprehensive Final 25% GRADING SCALE: A: % B: 80 89% C: 70 79% D: 60 69%. Plus minus grades may be awarded in borderline cases at instructor s discretion. For this course, homework will mainly be online assignment (though there will be a few hand written assignments as well). Typically, I will assign online homework on a weekly basis and it will be due every Tuesday at the beginning of class. Quizzes will take place during recitation sections. Late work will not be accepted for any reason and no make up quizzes are given for any reason even if the reason is valid or excused. Instead, I will drop your lowest three assignments from the homework/quiz category. Make up exams will NOT be given. If there are severe extenuating circumstances it is your responsibility to contact me via e mail as soon as possible. If you do not contact me before the next class meeting, you will receive a zero for that exam. NO EXCEPTIONS. Cheating will not be tolerated. Any student caught attempting to cheat, cheating, or helping another student cheat will receive a grade of F for the course.
2 TIPS TO SUCCEED IN THIS CLASS: Attend class regularly and on time. Do the homework ASAP after class (right after class is ideal). Trust me, this helps. Create study groups with other classmates for homework sessions. Ask questions during class. If you are falling behind or need extra help please do something about it immediately. RESOURCES: The Math Center has free walk in tutoring available Mon Thu: 8:30AM 7PM; Fri: 8:30AM 4pm; and Sun: 1PM 6PM. It is located in the William Raggio Building Room Additionally, the Tutoring Center, private and group tutoring. Please visit the office in the Thompson Building, Suite 100 or call for locations, times and more information. My office hours and the TA s office hours are also available to you; if the hours listed don t work for you, we can schedule a time that will. CLASS POLICIES: NO CELL PHONE USE IS ALLOWED. IF YOU ARE FOUND TEXTING, YOU WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE. Also, please turn your ringers off at the beginning of class. No ipods, or other MP3 players are allowed. Participate in class and group activities. On the second Register page, check the course and instructor name in the box on the right to make sure you're enrolling in the correct course. 3. If so, you can either: Enter your username and password and click Sign In. Do this if you have previously taken a Pearson course, because you already created a Pearson account. If you can't remember your username or password, click Forgot your username or password? to have your account information ed to you. Click Create to get a new Pearson account. Do this if you have never taken a Pearson online course. If you're not sure, click Not sure if you have an account? to see a list of Pearson courses that you might have taken. GET ACCESS TO YOUR COURSE After you register, you get access to your course by either: Use the access code that came with your textbook or that you purchased separately from the bookstore. 5 Course Description and Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) CATALOG DESCRIPTION STAT 152 INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICS Lecture+Lab: 2+2 Credit(s): 3 Descriptive statistics; probability models; statistical estimation and hypothesis testing. Credit may not be received for STAT 152 if credit has already been awarded for MATH 352 or STAT 352 and above. (Formerly MATH 152; implemented Fall 2003.) Prereq(s): ACT score of 27 or SAT score of 610 or MATH 126 R with a "C " or better. COURSE OBJECTIVES Core Objective 2: Quantitative Reasoning. Students will be able to apply quantitative reasoning and mathematical analysis methodologies to understand and solve problems. SLO1. Students will be able to compute descriptive statistics and probabilities from data, using the application of correct statistical notation and language, as well as clearly explaining the reasoning they applied. SLO2. Students will be able to choose and apply an appropriate statistical analysis or modeling methods to solve problems arising in different research fields. SLO3. Students will be able to use statistical tools to solve problems from different fields. Core Objective 3: Critical Analysis and Use of Information. Students will be critical consumers of information, able to engage in systematic research processes, frame questions, read critically, and apply observational and experimental approaches to obtain information.
