The student applies mathematical process standards to develop and use strategies and methods for whole number computations and decimal sums and differences in order to solve problems with efficiency and accuracy. Model adding and subtracting decimals. Discuss how place value helps you add and subtract. You may want to show a short video clip modeling the process. On Grade Level: Give students a partner and Decimal Practice Cards Set A. Students select two decimal cards. On paper, they will add and subtract those two cards, checking their partner s work. GT Level Group: Give students a partner and Decimal Cards Set B. Students select two decimal cards. On paper, they will add and subtract those two cards, checking their partner s work. Students can create additional decimal cards for their partner to solve. Resources: Decimal Practice Cards Set A and B (attached) Adding and Subtracting Menus (*adapted from Differentiating Instruction with Menus by Laurie E Westphal): Menu A-On Grade level Menu B- GT Level group Note- Some of the items are similar on both Menus; see lesson for specifics.
2 Whole Class: Share examples of student work. PART TWO: Whole Class: Show students the Adding and Subtracting Decimal Menus and explain that they will pick two from each row to complete-give time for questions/answers. On Grade Level: Students will work in groups of three or pairs to complete two activities from each row on the Adding and Subtracting Decimal Menu A. Adding Decimals and Subtracting Modeling Decimals Line Em Up Song GT Level: Students will work in triads or pairs to complete two activities from each row on the Adding and Subtracting Decimal Menus B. Row 2 of Menu A overlaps with row 1 of Menu B allowing GT students to work on grade level material and with a non GT identified student. Students may also work in GT Clusters to complete all of the activities together on the Properties of Matter Menu. Whole Class: Students have a Gallery Walk display of their completed projects.

4 Name Adding and Subtracting Decimals Menu A Pick two activities from row 1 and two activities from row 2 to Worksheet Create a worksheet for your classmates to help them practice adding and subtracting decimals. Make sure to include an answer key. Flip Book Create a flipbook with examples of adding and subtracting decimals on the flaps with the answers inside. Concentration Create a concentration card game to match decimal word problems with their answers. Decimals in the News Decimals are big news! Go through two sections of your newspaper and locate all of the numbers recorded as decimals. Estimate the total of all the numbers, and then calculate it. Write a letter Write a letter to your parents about how decimals are a part of your daily life. Cite at least one example of adding decimals and one example of subtracting decimals. Include examples to prove your point. Crossword Puzzle Create a decimal crossword puzzle in which all of the answers are written in words and all of the clues are problems.
