1 Welcome to Year 2 Dear Parents / Carers, Class Rules Each class has a set of class rules which have been negotiated by the students and the teacher. They incorporate the school welfare policy. RANDWICK SCHOOL RULES CLASS RULES Be Safe Always be Safe and Sensible. Help others to be safe. Respect Property Look after all equipment. Keep the classroom and the playground tidy. Care For Others Be Helpful and Friendly. Always share and take turns. Always do your best and be positive. Wear a broad brimmed hat to be sun safe. We will always wear our hats when we are outside in the playground or at sport. Parents as Partners The best way to encourage children to value education is to show them that you value it too. You can do this by ensuring your child: Attends school every day. Arrives at and is collected from school on time. Has full school uniform including a broad brimmed school hat and is well groomed. Has the required classroom equipment. Has a sufficient amount of nutritious food and water every day. Also please provide notes for illness or absence as soon as your child returns to school ( ed to teacher). Homework Homework will be issued every Monday from Week 4 this term. It is to be returned to class every Friday morning. Homework should take approximately minutes per day, no more. Homework includes;

2 Daily reading for minutes from the student s Home Reading book. This includes discussing the book with your child. Parents need to sign and date the Home Reader Log Book everyday and books are to be returned everyday for a new reader. Home reading should be achievable and enjoyable. Students are regularly tested in class for their appropriate reading level. Spelling and Maths Mental activities set in a textbook. Please sign your child s homework sheet in the front of their Maths Mentals and Spelling workbook every week. Online homework One set Mathletics task and optional Reading Eggs activities to support spelling. If your child is unable to access the internet at home, please contact the class teacher. Please mark your child s homework with them as they complete it. Instant feedback is one of the keys to successful learning. General Assembly The Stage 1 assembly will be held from 2:20pm 3:00pm on alternate Fridays starting in Week 5 (24 th February). Each class will take turns hosting the assembly, please feel free to come along. Reports The Semester One (Term 1 and 2) report is a comprehensive written report outlining student achievement in all six Key Learning Areas and specialist programs across the school. The final report is sent to you at the end of Semester 2 (Term 4). Interviews Interviews will be held in Week 10/11 of Term One. This interview is primarily centred on your child s social adjustment to school and can provide the opportunity to discuss your child s progress and address any concerns that you may have. If you wish to discuss your child s progress at another time please arrange an appointment by calling the school office, ing or send a note. I would be more than happy to discuss your child s progress, at a mutually convenient time. Notes / Attendance If your child is absent from school please ensure you send a note or your child s class teacher. If your child is booked in to attend Randwick After School Care and they are absent from school, you also need to alert the Care Centre on the day they are absent. Ph Birthdays We love sharing and celebrating birthdays in class. If you wish to send in something to celebrate your child s birthday please send cupcakes as they are easy to share. Do not send lollies or lolly bags. Communication

3 Newsletter Please keep updated via the fortnightly School Newsletter for more information related to school activities. Please ensure your contact details are up to date with your on-line class parent and the school office. Copies of the School Newsletter are available at the office, ROOSH and Canteen if you would like a hard copy. Skoolbag In 2017, Skoolbag will be the main form of mass communication to families. Please, install the application on your personal device. CareMonkey We will also be using CareMonkey as a way of distributing permission notes this year. You will be able to read and electronically sign notes through the app. You can install the app on your device or access this service through the link, P & C Communication You can also stay in touch with our P&C body by following the new Randwick Public School P&C Facebook. Parents are all welcome to follow the link and already we have posted information about the canteen, uniform shop and loyalty programs that our school benefits from. Feel free to have a read yourself! Randwick Public School also has an official Facebook page to highlight some of the many activities that happen daily. You can follow this page by following this link: Key Learning Areas Subject Areas The Curriculum The six key learning areas in primary school are: 1. English 2. Mathematics 3. History and Geography 4. Science 5. Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PD/H/PE) 6. Creative Arts. English There are 3 main areas: Reading and Viewing: students learn to develop their fluency and intonation; important focus on developing comprehension skills through explicit teaching and lots of discussion;

4 "Drop Everything and Read" (DEAR time) routines will begin early in the year to promote independent reading for a more extended periods of time; nightly home reading to develop confidence and practise new skills e.g. intonation; weekly Reading Groups provide time to practise and apply new skills; students will attend weekly lessons in the Library. Writing and Representing: important focus on grammar, punctuation and vocabulary skills; regular handwriting lessons; in-class spelling program, including a weekly test, and reinforced by the spelling homework book; we begin the year with a focus on "imaginative" writing and then move into "informative" and "persuasive" writing later in the year. Speaking and Listening. we begin the year with activities in class that are designed to increase vocabulary and improve communication skills e.g. engaging effectively in conversations; later in the year students will give more formal talks in front of the class and will compete in the RPS Public Speaking Competition. Mathematics The 3 Mathematic strands are Number & Algebra, Measurement & Geometry and Statistics & Probability. Focus on hands on materials is an important part of learning in mathematics Ongoing assessment of each area happens throughout the year History/Geography Semester 1 History The Past in the Present. Student s investigate the history of a significant person, building, site or part of the natural environment in the local community and what it reveals about the past. They also look at the importance today of a historical site of cultural or spiritual significance; for example, a community building, a landmark, a war memorial. Students will have the opportunity to explore the surrounding area of the school and investigate what the significant sites and within walking distance and what they reveal about the area. Semester 2 Geography People and Places. Student s investigate places across a range of scales within Australia and explore people s connections and access to these places locally and globally. Science Term 1 - Water Works

5 This unit provides opportunities for students to develop an understanding of, and appreciation for, a precious natural resource. Through investigations, students explore how water is used, where water comes from and how to use it responsibly. Term 2 All mixed up In the All mixed up unit students learn about materials that don t mix well, and others that are difficult to separate. Through hands-on investigations, students explore how changing the quantities of materials in a mixture can alter its properties and uses. Semester 2 Coding a Dance Sequence This year, Randwick is undertaking STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Units across the school. Year 2 will engage in exploring the use of patterns to effectively code a dance sequence for a robot using ScratchJr. They will also investigate and research the roles of scientists and engineers in society. Personal Development, Health, Physical Education (PDHPE) Personal Development Programs are covered throughout the year. These include the MindUp program, Sun/Water/Road Safety, Peer Support, Drug Education and Child Protection. The whole school Peer Support program will continue in The focus is on positive relationships and understanding. In Term 1, sport lessons will take place once a week when students go to swimming at UNSW. Furthermore, they will participate in Footsteps Dance, Fundamental Movement Skills and Auskick lessons later in the year. Creative Arts Creative Arts includes art, art appreciation, dance, drama and music. This year we will be focusing on colour appreciation, exploring different art techniques as well as learning the recorder and exploring music, movement, drama and dance. We look forward to participating in the end of year art event in Semester Two. Technology Students will have access to technology in all subject areas. Programs provide opportunities for students to research, create multimedia presentations, publish written work, collate information, communicate with others and to extend upon their word processing skills. Each classroom is equipped with an Interactive Whiteboard, computers and ipads connected to the Internet. Students are encouraged to use this technology to enhance their learning across all curriculum areas. There is a whole school focus on Digital Citizenship where we will look at how to behave responsibly when using the computers and being safe on social media. The Department of Education s intranet provides the children with access to a school facility, as well as other services used for educational purposes. You could greatly assist me by: Completing late or early leaving notes when your child has arrived late for school, or is leaving early at the school office; Ensuring that your contact details are always kept up to date; Ensuring that the office has any medication that your child may need as well as an action plan; Ensuring all homework is completed promptly, neatly and returned every Friday morning. Students are only to use lead or coloured pencils in their books, no textas or pens;

6 Listening to your child read every night and ensure that Home Readers and booklets are returned to school every day; Labelling your child s name and class on all items of clothing, hats, food and drink containers; Not allowing small toys and valuable items to be brought to school; Ensuring that your child wears a school broad brimmed hat and sun cream to school every day (especially sports days); Ensuring that your child wears full school uniform, including black shoes to school every day; Ensuring that your child has time and space to complete their homework; Donating one box of tissues and 1 pump bottle of liquid hand soap would be appreciated; If your child is absent, please notify the teacher by phone, or a note on the day the child returns to school explaining the absence; (Please write a date on all notes) If the absence is more than one day please inform the teacher by ; Students are not required to bring a pencil case, coloured pencils, pencil rubbers, sharpeners and glue sticks as they are provided for each student in Stage 1.
