1 Organizing Mobilizes to influence successful organizing outcomes, strengthen internal and external relationships, and membership capacity; as well as recruit and identify new members and potential leaders into the association. Competency Theme Utilizes organizing best practices Understands the theory and best practices associated with organizing. Level sessions will explore organizing best practices and how to utilize them (i.e. strategic readings, case studies from within NEA recent experience). Participants will be exposed to actively participating in, observing and notating from an organizing field experience. Develops a successful campaign using organizing skills to engage members in key issues. to the best practices in joining the local membership or organizing committee to plan and help execute an organizing activity and/or field experience, including development of growth and strength goals within a campaign context. Evaluates campaign strategies to continually improve the impact of future campaigns and organizing approaches. Level sessions will explore the best practices in leading all or part of an organizing activity for work site or local affiliate. Participants will practice reviewing and leading a debriefing session for an activity in which they have participated. 1
2 Competency Theme Builds meaningful community partnerships Engages different and diverse audiences in the community to identify common issues. Collaborates with different and diverse community audiences, and educates them on key issues. Transforms the relationship with the community to harness the power of collective action. Level sessions explore how and why to build meaningful community partnerships, how to identify appropriate partners, and how to get started in this work. Participants will be exposed to information on community partnerships and various successful partnership models within the NEA, including case studies. to advanced strategies on building community partnerships. Participants will delve more deeply into models of successful partnership around common issues, including case studies and review of challenges (and solutions) for sustainable partnership organizing. Level sessions will provide strategies for effective partnership and coalition organizing around public education issues Participants will explore successful models, including case studies, of advancing our mission of great public schools for all by building powerful coalition campaigns. This may include, for example, the bargaining for the common good strategies and work with the Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools. Makes strategic plans that rely on data and analysis Analyzes and compiles reliable research data to formulate organizing strategies. Utilizes valid data to formulate a foundation for long term plans including objectives, strategies and goals. Implements strategic plans to increase membership and support key objectives. to the use of databases to import to advanced data analytics training Level sessions provide strategies for utilizing data for membership 2
3 Engages in collective action to identify and address pivotal issues and export data for analysis related to growth and strength, and to the role of strategic research in organizing. Identifies and engages in high impact and actionable organizing opportunities. and advanced use of strategic research. Participants will be exposed to exporting data reports to do building mapping and strategic targeting; and also to target engagement of member populations (especially new educators and ethnic/racial diversity within leadership roles). Rallies others around key organizing opportunities by appealing to member passions and interests. campaigns. Participants learn how to actively participate with local or state member organizing committees to set up targets for membership recruitment. And to use strategic research in organizing and bargaining campaigns. Sessions also build upon mapping and targeting strategies. Makes organizing on key issues more systematic and process driven, to improve their impact. Level sessions will expose participants to case studies and examples of engagement activities in local or state affiliate. And how to identify an appropriate issue for action. Level sessions will expose participants to seek out organizing engagement opportunities. This can be in the form of state affiliate or community organizing activities. They will learn what strategies and tactics are, and leave with a menu of campaign options and models. Level sessions will allow participant to explore successful collective action campaign models, including recent case studies, and engage in advanced strategic discussion of structures to foster sustained collective engagement and routine use of collective voice and action to make change. 3

Develops imaginative recruitment and retention strategies that grow the association s membership and influence others to become more actively involved in the talent management process. Influences members to own the agenda of the association through their active participation and attitude towards collective action. Member will actively participate in a worksite or affiliate back to school recruitment campaign, listening tour, or blitz. Member will learn and practice rap for 1 on 1 recruitment conversation. Participants will leave with understanding of why capacity building is continuous work in locals and affiliates Participants will have a chance to write a recruitment campaign and engagement plan, based on sharing of models/case studies and including specific goals; participants will be expected to implement the plan. Participants will examine their own local growth and strength plans and learn assessment techniques to inform goal-setting for future plans; Participants will study successful models of routine/sustainable engagement and retention and prepare to implement changes that reflect a culture of growth and strength. Fosters the development of leaders at all levels of the organization Identifies and engages emerging association leaders who reflect our diversity. Mentors emerging leaders and encourages them to put plans in place to accelerate their level of participation. Advocates for new and diverse member strategies and actively supports leadership succession planning. Read Allan Johnson s Privilege, Power and Difference for self-reflection and appreciation of differences. Within current worksite practice Identify and mentor new leaders about their practice and use of association leadership and/or professional issues leadership within their worksites. Participants will engage in planning for sustained leadership recruitment and development, including identifying training and support needs and structures within the local or state affiliate. 4
5 mapping skills to identify colleagues with followings. Practice and conduct conversations with those individuals about assuming a leadership role with the association. Participants will study distributive and natural leader s models and participate in a field experience to identify and recruit leaders, and/or develop a local plan for leadership recruitment and development. Particular attention will be paid to recruitment of leaders that have a following, lead in our practice and professions, and reflect ethnic, racial and age diversity. 5
