6 A Guide to Revision Ten Top Tips Get yourself organised make sure you have a realistic revision timetable and stick to it. Have all your school books, pens, revision guides and past papers you need in one place. Make a list of all of the topics you need to cover for each subject, and once you have revised each section, tick it off. Then you will see that you are making regular progress. First things first make sure you re up to date with your class notes make revision notes in your revision folder: Start by reading over your class notes. Highlight the most important parts Re-write your class work as revision notes. Learn your revision notes: Revisit your notes after one day, one week, one month, as well as just before the exam this really works! Use as many ACTIVE revision techniques as you can. You can revise visually Use diagrams, mind maps, colour coding Display these on your walls where you will see them regularly.

7 You can revise in an auditory way record your revision notes on your ipod or other recording device and listen back to your notes and answers you remember twice as much of what you hear than what you read. You can revise in a kinaesthetic way cut out what you want to learn into the form of a card sorting exercise or jigsaw; shuffle or re-arrange the notes and then put them back into order. Put revision cards up round the house, especially for any rote learning chemical formulae, French vocabulary etc. Read them when eating breakfast, brushing your teeth, sitting on the loo etc. Watch revision DVDs actively pause them, make notes of key/difficult areas and test yourself or you can watch the DVD with a friend and then test each other. Use memory techniques: Acronyms e.g. HADAFOREST helps you to remember how to write persuasively. Mnemonics e.g. Richard of York Gave Battle In Vain helps you to remember the colours of the rainbow. Rhymes e.g. In fourteen-hundred-and-ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue Why not make up your own and put them to simple tunes like Twinkle, twinkle little star, Three blind mice etc. Some people find that adding dance moves or actions make them easier to remember. It may make you laugh, but if it works for you, go for it! Revise your weakest areas of knowledge and understanding TWICE as much as areas of strength turn your weaknesses into strengths. Practice past paper questions. Use the exam board syllabus past papers and examiners reports to check your answers and correct any mistakes to create the perfect model answer REVISE your model answers. Use Interactive websites like I am Learning My Maths BBC GCSE Bitesize Save the online revision sites for the second or third revision session of the evening to maintain your interest.

8 Guess the question use the syllabus, your notes and past papers to guess what the examiner will ask answer your questions by creating model answers and learn the answers. Teach your teddy! Explaining to someone else helps your understanding it doesn t have to be a real person the teaching part of the process is the key revision technique. Have a bottle of water next to you while you revise, some nuts to nibble on and a banana for a quick boost of energy if you get hungry. And most importantly DON T PUT IT OFF. Revision gets easier the more you do, getting started is the hardest part.

9 Tips for using your Revision Planner Your Revision Planner is a calendar that you can use to plan your work for these coming months. 1) First of all, you need to fill in the dates and times of all your exams plus the times you are in school, and the revision classes you go to. 2) Then, you need to map out all the topics and sub-topics that you need to revise you can use the first sheet, What do I need to revise? to help you with this. 3) Then you can schedule when you are going to revise for each subtopic and write this on the Revision Planner. School holidays, weekends and unusual days are shaded to make the planner clearer to use but that is not to say that you can t plan revision for those times it is just a matter of coming up with a balanced and realistic plan that will work for you. Make it realistic and build in breaks - you might, for example, choose to study hard for 45 minutes in each hour and then have a 15 minute break. Or, you choose to study for 2 hours and then take a break. You know what will work best for you. If you are not sure, please speak to your tutors or teachers for advice. 38 Dance Catering Business Art Continue to draw from observation in your own time - using tutorials from youtube is acceptable! Take pictures and collect images based on Self Image. Continue to refine books - use advice given by your teacher to make improvements to your sketchbook. Come to ART CLUB on Wednesdays after school. Do research on computers - reflective writing on completed work or analysis of artists work is valuable. Work through your revision book, taking notes on different areas of the syllabus. You have questions that you can answer and test yourselves at the end of each section. Use revision websites: Visit for past papers. Edmodo has tests that students have posted during exam time which you can also use to revise. Use your key word books, use them and test yourself on the definitions. Come to revision on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday after school and/ or lunchtimes. Write down as many key words as possible along with their definitions. Use your revision pack and make notes on key topics. Carry out as much research as you can on the catering industry, particularly communication, equipment, healthy eating, hazards and safety. Read and have a go at some past papers: Practice all your dances; ask others watch them and give you feedback on your energy levels and overall performance. Make sure that all your written work includes analysis of your work as well as specific examples. Come to lunchtime rehearsals!

39 French English Literature English Language Drama Make sure you learn your lines ask a parent or friend to read through the play with you and practice reading the line before so you learn your cues. Take time to really think about your play and character; discuss these with others and encourage them to question you on it. This will help you to think about the role you re playing. Come to lunchtime rehearsals. Take time to read a range of non-fiction texts; try to summarise what you have read for each one in three sentences. Use the resources on bitesize and focus on asking yourself: How do these specific word choices affect this text? Use the revision guides you ve been given by your teacher. Spend time revising from the resources on the internet on the AQA 'Moonlight on the Tides' poetry anthology (the character and voice section of poetry.) Also use the resources on the internet on the AQA 'Sunlight on the Grass' prose anthology. When reading each text, make notes on: o a basic overview of each poem or short story o how has the writer used language to create an effective? o how does the structure affect the readers experience of the text? Re-read key parts of the texts that you have studied such as Of Mice and Men', the short stories, and the poetry. Make notes or talk to someone else about your views of specific characters, using examples from the text to explain your point of view. Use websites such as duolingo to practise hearing French daily. For controlled assessment practice, build up what you know sentence by sentence and test yourself regularly. Adapt language from the exemplar material that you ve been given to ensure that you re achieving your best. Access past papers through Edmodo and practise listening or reading daily. You only need to do one or two exercises and gradually build up what you know. Go online and access past papers in listening or reading, and complete a little daily. The key to success is to do a little, often. Don t leave all of your learning to the last minute! 40 Maths History Health and Social Care Geography Revise for your exams using your revision guide and ask if you don t have one. Make sure you know all your case studies and have them written out on flashcards/paper so you can revise them. Useful Websites: o o o o Make sure you know and can spell correctly key words and terms. Try to attend all the twilight sessions. Spend time working through the revision booklet you ve been given and ask if you re not sure about anything. Use the revision guides you ve been given to practise past questions. We are happy to mark them! Traffic light different areas of the course to assess where you are at the moment to focus revision effectively. Create mind maps, and use other revision tools that you find most useful, to help you learn key dates and people. BBC Bitesize is useful for revision of the Germany part of the course Come along to the revision classes that we hold each week. Pair up with a friend and test each other on what you have learnt. Make sure you use your revision guide! Use it to identify topics that you find difficult, and focus on these. There are past exam papers and mark schemes on the Hans Price VLE which you can access via the Hans Price website. Aim to complete one every week and either send it in to school for your Maths teacher to mark or use the mark scheme to check your answers at home. Use Maths Watch or MyMaths to look up topics you find difficult. Maths Watch can be accessed via Real Smart Learning on the Hans Price website. The codes are hansprice, student, hansprice. Mymaths can be googled and then use the codes HansPrice, decimal.

41 Travel and Tourism Sport BTEC Science PE Use this website to revise: As this is a new specification for 2014 entries, there are few past papers or revision books to match it. However, AQA have advised that the Teaching and Learning resources on the AQA PE home page are valuable revision resources. Build up profiles of a range of performers in a range of sports: o Make notes on their training/support/physiological, psychological factors. o Describe the environment they participate in, the types of competition they will take part in. o What is the role of their NGB? Develop a range of roles in these profiles Chemistry: You will be sitting a C2 paper which will include bonding, rates of reaction and reacting masses. It will include everything that you have studied so far. The best revision website is BBC Bitesize but you do have a past paper on which you should be doing corrections for homework, alongside your revision. Physics: you will be sitting a P2 paper which will include power and forces and energy. It will include everything you have studied so far. You have an online tracker which you need to work through and complete any outstanding work. All pass criteria must be completed to achieve a pass overall. Log onto google docs and complete any assignments which you have not yet achieved a pass in. All your BTEC units are online and you can access and work on these from home using remote access. You need to complete all the units set.
