1 Maths Term : Autumn Year : 7 Teacher : Mr. A Mohamed Following topics will be covered from Collins pupil book 1.2: Statistics (Collins pupil book, chapter 6). Algebra (chapter 7) Fractions (chapter 8). 2nd Half Term: Angles (chapter 9) Coordinates and graphs (chapter 10) Percentages (chapter 11) End of term examinations Assessment is a crucial part of teaching and learning and is the primary means of checking how much of the intended knowledge your child has acquired. We will employ a number of strategies and techniques to ensure that we make assessment a central and continuous part of our teaching practice. Pupils learning will be assessed in the lesson via selective questioning and student participation. Homework will form a key part of students learning and a useful tool for assessing and recording students progress. End of term exams and end of topic test will also be used for summative assessment. Formative assessment will be used to make learners aware of their progress and help formulate a learning strategy that fits the needs of the individual student. How can I help my child in this subject? This subject, by its nature, demands constant practice and revision therefore it is crucial that your child has a structured and planned time for maths every evening during the week. 40 minutes practice in the evening would help reinforce and retain the learning. Your child should have the correct equipment for all lessons. They will need their scientific calculators and geometry sets for some of the topics. They should make a habit of practicing at home. Please also encourage your child to always check their homework before handing it in as this well help them self correct and is a vital element in their own self-assessment. All the diagrams including construction work as well as graphs should be done with pencil only. Any missed homework will be flagged up through their diaries, so please check them. Please feel free to contact me at the school from :00 if you have any questions or concerns. Alternatively, leave a note in your child s homework diary and I will try to give you a written response on the same day or me on abdirazzak.mohamad@alkhairschool.org.uk
2 English Term : Spring Year : Year 7 Teacher : Mrs Nazia Gani 1. TOPICS Alter Egos: Discovering a hidden self For more information: 2nd Half Term: Writing the world: Presenting the Natural world For more information: 2. ASSESSMENTS There will be at least 2 assessed pieces this term at the End of Term, some of which are seen or unseen. All exams are important and the average of the results will play a large part in determining the predicted grades of the candidates submitted to colleges. They are therefore extremely important. One assessment will be comprehension One assessment will be composition 3. How can I help my child in this subject? Encouragement, praise, ensuring that they do their homework; and checking their diaries. Encouraging them to read around the subject, discuss topics with them, ask their opinions. Their notes must be in order; discipline is essential.
3 4. Resources There is a plethora of resources on the subject freely available on the web. Summary: Ask us about the dropbox link Edexcel Website Crash course channel on Youtube amongst others. 5. New Textbook/Reading lists The English department is now using new books and resources in line with the new syllabus. They are designed to help your children become confident, powerful writers. It sets out to show your children how authors create and convey different meanings in their writing by the choices they make, and invites them to consider how the meaning might have been subtly different had they made different language choices. The book is very clear about how students can become better writers, but it is not a recipe book or set of instructions for success. Writing is far more complex than that. We want your children to think like a writer, knowing what choices and possibilities they have in each piece of writing, and being able to make and justify those choices with confidence. Enjoy the power! Reading lists were given out at the beginning of the year. Please request if lost. 6. Communications Please feel free to contact us at the school from :00 if you have any questions or concerns. Alternatively, leave a note in your child s homework diary and we will try to give you a written response on the same day, or contact me, Mrs Gani, by on: nazia.gani@alkhairschool.org.uk

5 How can I help my child in this subject? Students should be encouraged to follow scientific developments that are happening now. This could be done through the media - science magazines, TV programmes and visits (alternative technology centres and the science museum, for example). Visits to museums can encourage students to think about how science has developed overtime and how scientists have collaborated in their research. Students will be provided with text books written specifically for this course. Parents and carers are advised to familiarise themselves with the content of these books so that they are more able to give help. It would be advisable for parents to regularly ask their children about the class work/home work as a way of helping them revise and analyse what they are taught. Useful Websites For independent study the following websites are recommended: KS3 Biology : KS3 Chemistry: KS3 Physics: Link 4 science: You can contact me at the school or alternatively, by or leave a note in your child s homework diary. address: haroon.hayat@alkhairschool.org.uk ; aziza.helaly@alkhairschool.org.uk
