Maths Term : Spring 2017 Year : 10B & 10G Teacher : Mr. Afzal ali.afzal@alkhairschool.org.uk Following topics will be covered from Collins GCSE Maths 9-1 Textbook 1st Half Term Module 9 Types of number (Chapter 14) Module 10 Patterns and sequences (Chapter 4) Module 11 2-D and 3-D shapes (Chapter 7) Module 12 Perimeter and area (Chapter 9) 2nd Half Term Module 13 Fractions, decimals and percentages (Chapter2, Chapter 16) Module 14 Formulae and linear equations (Chapter 15) Module 15 Linear graphs (Chapter 10) Module 16 Simultaneous equations (Chapter 15) There will be four assessments this term. The national curriculum expects the average students at this age and at this stage of their education to be working at least Grade 4 and at most Grade 9 in GCSE Mathematics. We have a mixed ability class and while students in this school generally exceed the national average, there is inevitably going to be some students who find maths challenging and who will not be working at this level. All summative assessments will be at least Grade 4 but there will be differentiation for those pupils who are at either end of the ability spectrum. Assessment 1 will comprise of the homework given to students in spring term. The purpose of this is to encourage a culture of home/independent learning and pressure students to take homework seriously. Assessment 2 will be an exam based assessment looking at pupils understanding of Types of number, Patterns and Sequences, 2D and 3D Shapes, Perimeter and Area, Fractions, decimals and percentages. Assessment3 will also be a test on topics relating to formulae and linear equations, linear graphs and simultaneous equations. Assessment 4 will be an end of term exam which will be made of all topics we have learned in Spring Term. This will be a good opportunity to assess how much knowledge the students have retained from spring term. How can I help my child in this subject? Students will benefit from having a designated quiet space in which they can study. They will need their scientific calculators and geometry sets for some of the topics. They should make a habit of practicing exam questions at home. Please also encourage your child to always check their homework before handing it in as this well help them self-correct and is a vital element in their own self-assessment. All the diagrams including construction work as well as graphs should be done with pencil only. Any missed homework will be flagged up through their exercise book, so please check them.
Please feel free to contact me at the school from :00 if you have any questions or concerns. Alternatively, leave a note in your daughter/son s homework diary and I will try to give you a written response by the same day.
English Term : Year : Teacher : Spring Year 10B/G Mr Arif uz Zaman / Ms Jamila Elwahabi 1. TOPICS 1st Half Term: GCSE Edexcel: Literature We will explore: Pride and Prejudice 2nd Half Term: GCSE Edexcel: Language We will explore: Fiction Writing and Creative Writing NB - Refer to the Ideal Subject Grid for an overall view. It ought be noted that in accordance with good teaching practices, planning will vary depending on needs of students. 2. ASSESSMENTS There will be at least 2 assessed pieces this term including the End of Term, some of which are seen or unseen. All exams are equally important and the average of the results will play a large part in determining the predicted grades of the candidates submitted to colleges. They are therefore extremely important. One section tests before half term. The End of Term assessment will be on what they ve covered after half term NB - Please refer to Ideal Subject Plan for more guidance. 3. How can I help my child in this subject? Encouragement, praise, ensuring that they do their homework; and checking their diaries. Encouraging them to read around the subject. Further, students must be aware that there is no time to relax, that GCSEs are very pressurised exams. Their notes must be in order; discipline is essential.
4. Resources There is a plethora of resources on the subject freely available on the web, as well as resources on dropbox folder. Summary: Ask us about the dropbox link Edexcel Website Crash course channel on Youtube amongst others. 5. Reading lists Students must obtain their own copies of the set texts, listed below. This is because these texts will form the basis of their GCSE Literature exam and they need to make notes in their books for revision purposes. They will be seriously disadvantaged without their own books. We also recommend they acquire a notebook on each set text, like a CGP revision book. However, this is not essential. Summary: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen - *ESSENTIAL* Edexcel GCSE English Language Text Anthology 20th/ 21st Century British Short Stories (Any) The Broadview Anthology of Victorian Short Stories CGP 6. Communications Please feel free to contact us at the school from :00 if you have any questions or concerns. 5 Physics Term : Spring Year : 10 Teacher : Mrs. Aziza Helaly 1st Half Term: Energy transfer by heating (Cont.) : In this chapter the concept of specific heat capacity will be used to explain the choice of materials used in heating systems. The reduction of energy transfers to the surroundings by insulation, such as loft or cavity wall insulation, will be studied and applied to the context of reducing energy loss in buildings to reduce heating costs including the idea prioritising home improvements in line with payback time. Energy resources: In this chapter the students will examine the different sources of energy that are used to generate electricity or provide heating for homes. They will consider the effect of the production and use of biofuels on the environment along with the concept of carbon-neutrality before outlining the use of nuclear power in comparison to fossil fuels. 2nd Half Term: Electric circuits: In this chapter the students will describe the structure of an atom in terms of charged particles and the process of charging by friction resulting in ions and the transfer of electrons. This leads to the concept of an electric field surrounding charged objects causing attractive or repulsive forces between them. The students will then describe electric circuits and the components used to construct them using the concept of current as the rate of charge flow through components due to a potential difference between points in the circuit. Resistance was introduced and the cause of a heating effect and corresponding energy transfer. Finally, the students investigate and analyse a range of series and parallel circuits describing the path of current at junctions, the potential difference across branches and components, and the effect on resistance of series and parallel branches. Student progress is monitored continuously through a variety of testing methods, including, class work, homework and summative assessment. Students will have an assessment every 4 weeks and end of term assessment. These assessment tasks will include the end of unit assessments. The skills that are assessed are as follows: Working scientifically Understanding the application and implication of science Using investigative approaches Working critically with evidence Quality of written communication
All assessment marks are recorded in Schoolpod, and on a tracker in students books. How can I help my child in this subject? It is recommended that each pupil develops their own glossary. Encourage your child to learn the meaning and the correct spelling of key scientific terms. Please ensure that your son is up to date with his homework. Reading over and making their own notes about concepts and ideas covered is essential. Useful Websites For independent study the following websites are recommended: AQA specification: BBC Bitesize : S-cool the revision website: Revision GCSE Physics: You can contact me at the school or alternatively, by or leave a note in your child s homework diary. address: aziza.helaly@alkhairschool.org.uk
