1 AP WORLD HISTORY ASSIGNMENT SUMMER 2017 Ms.Austin and Mrs. Prettyman Welcome to Advanced Placement World History. During this course we will explore the history of humanity, a journey that will take us across time and space from the dawn of humans through the 21 st century. The goals of the course are to become aware of how humans have, and continue to, transform the world and to become better students of history. We will work toward these goals through the practice of analytical thinking, critical writing and Socratic discussion. The summer assignment is designed to lay a foundation for the course. It has three parts. AMSCO Book which provides an excellent overview of the scope of the course and students will complete Unit 1. The Map Assignment which lays ground work for our starting point, and The Crash Courses which give students a variety of facts and concepts of world history for the first unit. PART ONE: Students will purchase, World History Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination by the publishing company AMSCO. Students will complete the first unit, Chapters 1 & 2. Students will read, take notes, answer questions, and include vocabulary highlighted in notes. Notes may be completed in outline form, SQ3R, or by using 3x5 notecards. This will be graded. Accuracy in one of the three manners is required. Unit 1 Instructions: AMSCO Book ISBN # # $18.95, $8.50 shipping To order by phone: Chapter 1: From Hunter-Foragers to Settled Societies read pages Take notes on important facts and the terms located on page 11. The vocabulary located on page 11, must be highlighted in your notes & easily seen. The test prep questions highlighted in grey on pages 5, 8, 7, & 10 must be answered. Chapter 2: The First Civilizations read pages Take notes on important facts and terms located on page 40. The vocabulary located on page 40, must be highlighted in your notes & easily seen. The test prep questions highlighted in grey on pages 20, 22, 25, 27, 34, 36, & 37 must be answered.

2 These are the 3 homework methods that are permitted: (choose only 1) 1. Outline: Students should critically read & write important facts and ideas, including the vocabulary (highlighted) in the form of an outline. Where test prep questions call for a chart or paragraph just write that either in or at the end of the outline. Students will follow the outline criteria listed below. 2. SQ3R: Students should critically read & write important facts and ideas, including the vocabulary (highlighted) & answer the test prep questions. The test prep questions may be answered in the SQ3R notes or at the end. The SQR3 method of reading to be an active and effective reader. The passive reader learns little. The aggressive reader organizes information and answers questions. SQR3: survey, question, read, recite, review. Survey the chapter. Read the introduction to the chapter. Look over the major section headings. Glance at the figures. Skim questions, key words and summaries at the end of the chapter. Create a context for remembering information. Generate interest and a sense of what is important. Plan your study session. Set a time limit for working. Include breaks and rewards. Question. Create a question for each of the BOLD headings with the guidance of the following. For each section in the chapter, ask these 4 basic questions: What is the main point? What evidence supports the main point? What are the applications or examples? How is this related to the rest of the chapter, the book, the world, to me? Read the section and then answer the questions that you created about the bold headings. Skim or read the section actively. Search for the answers to your questions. Make notes in the margins to create your own organization. Recite the main points. Look up from the book and verbalize the answers to your questions. Talk out loud and listen to the answers. Recite to remember. Review. Now go back and highlight or underline the main points in the section. Add more notes in the text and margin.

3 3. 3x5 Notecards: Students should critically read & write important facts and ideas, including the vocabulary on a 3x5 notecard following the criteria listed below. Example notecard: Culture Unit 1 Chapter 1 Neolithic Who: early humans What: refers to the deliberate cultivation of plants and the taming and breeding of particular animals When: started 12,000 years ago Where: started in Mesopotamia, then global Why: gradually replaced the earlier practices of gathering and hunting, led to the rise of civilization

4 PART TWO: The Map Neatly label the 3 attached world maps with the features listed below. Use the colors indicated in parentheses. Print neatly and make sure your maps are easy to read. We will have a map test during the first two weeks of school Map 1: AP World Regions To find this map, visit go the link AP World History Course and Exam Description PDF and scroll to page 42. Using the world map entitled AP Regions Map, draw and label the AP Regions based on the closer view. Use striping to indicate regions that overlap. 5 PART THREE: Crash Course Assignment We will be working with John Green s Crash Courses throughout our study of World History. He, along with his high school history teacher Raoul Meyer, have developed fun videos that correspond to the AP World History Curriculum. How do we have evidence of hunter-gatherers (h-g) and their lifeways? 2. What advantages did h-g have over early agriculturalists? 3. Where did agriculture emerge? Which food crops are associated with which areas? 4. What are the advantages and disadvantages of agriculture? 5. What impact does agriculture have on the environment? 6. What advantages do you think that Eurasia had with its zoological set of animals compared to the Americas? 7. If h-g had a better and healthier lifeway, why did people become agriculturalists? 8. What do historians say are the drawbacks to complex civilizations and agriculture? EPISODE 2: THE INDUS VALLEY CIVILIZATION 1. How is the concept of civilization a useful construct? When is it not a useful construct?

6 2. How does John Green define what constitutes a civilization? How does this compare to other definitions of civilization you have learned? 3. Where did the earliest civilizations emerge? Why there? 4. why was the Indus valley a prime location? how did the environment impact the people who lived there? 5. What evidence exists of long-distance trade and with whom? 6. What appears to be unique about the IVC, based on your knowledge of other civilizations? EPISODE #3 ANCIENT MESOPOTAMIA 1. John Green begins by discussing one of the most obvious consequences of agriculture...what is it and what are the most immediate consequences for those societies? 2. How does Mesopotamia compare with the Indus River Valley (IRV)? Identify both similarities and differences. Think of why a specific similarity and a specific difference might exist. (this is analysis; one of the more challenging skills you will need to develop). 3.
