NEA has affiliate rganizatins in every state and in mre than 14,000 cmmunities acrss the United States. 3 Purpse f the Natinal Leadership Summits: Summit Gals & Objective T develp activist leaders and prepare them with the knwledge, skills, and abilities necessary t lead a relevant and thriving assciatin. Activist leaders are leaders frm all segments f the assciatin that demnstrate, thrugh actin, a deep cmmitment t the gals, values, and visin f the NEA. Summit Objectives: T deliver annually a unified, strategic, and interdisciplinary apprach t leadership develpment that reinfrces and supprts key leadership cmpetencies in six strategic areas. The Leadership Summits are ne vehicle t supprt the institutinalizatin f a cmpetencybased and cntinuus learning system designed t develp the next generatin f leaders and Activist Leaders. Summit Participants/Audience: The average NEA cnference attendee: Highly recmmends the Summit training fr ther leaders (90+% respnse rate after last year s Summit) Is between 36 and 55 years f age; Is an Activist/Emerging Leader r Recently-Elected Leader Has attended previus NEA Trainings Has between 9 and 24 years f educatin experience Likes the cnference prgram prgressin each sessin built n the thers Expects t use the Leadership Cmpetencies t imprve their affiliate Leadership develpment prgram Is interested in netwrking with ther educatin prfessinals Date and Lcatin: Natinal Leadership Summit March 16-18, 2018, Chicag, Illinis 3 Center fr Gvernance
4 Our Members The NEA has varius membership types that wrk in K-12 public schl and higher educatin institutins. When cnducting yur training, yu shuld expect t have each f these membership types in yur training sessin. NEA members are mst engaged when they feel like their persnal stry is reflected in training sessins, s it s helpful if yu can weave int yur training any stries r anecdtes abut different membership types. Very imprtant: There are many different educatin ccupatins, and t be inclusive f all educatin wrkers, it is critical that yu talk abut educatrs during yur sessin, nt just teachers, since the wrk teachers describes nly classrm teachers, nt the brad universe f educatrs that are NEA members. This is a significant issue fr NEA members, and using nly the teacher descriptin will likely result in many attendees nt ranking yur presentatin highly. This is extremely imprtant fr the 2018 Summit as this is the first year f alignment with the NEA Higher Educatin Cnference (Pre-Summit) and NEA-Retired Cnference (Pst-Summit), increasing the likelihd that these cnstituencies will be in attendance at the Summit. The fllwing are NEA s membership categries, and yu may have sme f each in yur sessin: Teachers: Included in this categry is every classrm teacher, frm K thrugh 12 th grades. Educatin Supprt Prfessinals: Fund in every schl in the cuntry, including institutins f higher educatin, ESP members have the fllwing ccupatins:: transprtatin wrkers (transprtatin and delivery services and vehicle maintenance), fd services emplyees (fd planning, preparatin and service), clerical/administrative persnnel (secretarial, clerical, and administrative supprt), paraeducatrs (instructinal and nninstructinal supprt), health and student services (nursing, health, and therapy supprt; cmmunity, family, parent and welfare services), custdial and maintenance wrkers (buildings and grunds maintenance and repair), security services (schl resurce, guard, plice, and security specialists), technical services (cmputer, audivisual, and language technical supprt; media, public relatins, writing, and art specialties), and skilled trades services (trades, crafts, machine peratrs). Higher Educatin Faculty & Staff: NEA is the largest cllege and university faculty and staff rganizatin in the United States, representing mre than 200,000 higher educatin emplyees in public as well as private institutins natinwide. Aspiring Educatrs: Any cllege r university student majring in educatin r wh is preparing fr an educatin career is invited t becme an NEA student member thugh the NEA Student Prgram. Substitute Educatrs: This grup f members has the vital rle f stepping int an educatr s jb when he/she is unable t be at the wrksite. Administratrs: Schl administratrs perfrm key functins in the maintenance and develpment f schls, and their faculty and students. NEA-Retired: There are mre than 275,000 NEA members wh retired frm active Assciatin membership and are members tday thrugh the NEA-Retired prgram. 4 Center fr Gvernance
5 Presenter Infrmatin NEA staff may pst nline an electrnic versin f any slides used during yur presentatins and this infrmatin can be viewed and/r dwnladed by the public. Develp yur presentatin using the Standards fr Leadership Develpment Training Prducts (Appendix I) and the Standards fr Cntent and Adult Learning Thery guidelines (Appendix II). Please ensure that yu have secured permissin t use any third-party material cntained in yur presentatin, and where apprpriate, cite surces. Upn arrival, check in at the NEA registratin desk and/r arrange t pick up yur badge and meeting materials and receive further instructins. Registratin pens at 11 am n the first day f the Summit. Presentatin materials will be available t attendees n the NEA website prir t the cnference. NEA will treat yur slide deck as yur presentatin material unless yu infrm us therwise. Presentatins r materials that fcus n the cmmercial intent f a prduct r a service are nt permitted. 5 Center fr Gvernance
6 Presentatin Slides and Handuts Adults d best in an active participatin mdel. Therefre, we ask that yu fllw an essential trait f an effective presentatin and, where pssible, engage the audience by psing questins r asking fr examples. The fllwing is an utline t cnsider when develping yur presentatin slides and will assist in the develpment f the curse and filming f the presentatin: 1. State the cmpetency, theme, and prficiency prgressin that will be cvered; 2. State the gal and bjective f each tpic upfrnt and clearly; 3. Mdel examples f ways the skill, r activity achieves the bjective; 4. Use chunking t break a large cncept int smaller, attainable, scafflded parts. 5. Cnfirm understanding by peridically asking questins f the grup. Alternatively, restate the skill r infrmatin and ask fr input r examples. 6. Prvide clsure. At the end f the presentatin, starting a few minutes befre the presentatin ends, recap the key pints cvered and prvide additinal examples. 7. The next t final slide shuld include the summary f the materials fr quick reference. Please ensure the final slide des nt cntain persnal infrmatin that yu d nt want t be shared t the larger audience, such as yur r phne number. 6 Center fr Gvernance
7 Breakut Sessins A laptp and prjectr will be prvided fr each presentatin sessin. A list f all speakers and sessins will be available at after January 26, Yur presentatin will be pre-laded n the cmputer in the rm t which yu have been assigned. Hwever, we must receive the presentatin n/r befre January 23, If yu make any changes in yur presentatin, yu will be respnsible t crdinate with the nsite audi-visual persnnel t make sure yur mst current versin is laded. Please d this as far in advance f yur sessin as pssible. Yu shuld arrive a few hurs prir t yur sessin t get registered fr the cnference, be directed t yur meeting rm, and have a few minutes prir t the pening f yur presentatin t test yur slides. Registratin pens at 11 am n the first day f the Summit. Each breakut sessin will have a rm mnitr assigned wh will keep the presentatins within time limits, assist with audi-visual needs r prblems, and distribute and cllect sessin evaluatins. ROOM LAYOUT Mst meeting rms will be set up with banquet style seating, which means that participants will be seated at rund tables. 9 Standards fr Leadership Develpment Training Prducts This dcument utlines the standards that will be used by the NEA Leadership Curriculum Advisrs t evaluate all prducts (Curses, Trainings, Wrkshps, Resurces, etc.) fr inclusin in the Leadership Curriculum. Cmpetency-Based: Cntent delivered at the NEA Leadership Summit shuld be grunded in a particular cmpetency r set f cmpetencies. These six cmpetencies define what fr ur Assciatin what leaders shuld knw and be able t d in the areas f prfessinal practice, rganizing, advcacy, cmmunicatins, business, as well as gvernance and leadership. Cultural Cmpetency: Cntent reinfrces the imprtance f valuing diversity, being culturally self-aware, and understanding the dynamics f cultural interactins. Cntent emphasizes behavirs, attitudes, practices and plicies that enable effective wrk in crss-cultural situatins. Student-Centered: Cntent has intentinal emphasis n the imprtance f fcusing n the success f students. Unin Values: Cntent reinfrces r supprts ne r all f NEA s cre values: equal pprtunity, justice, demcracy, prfessinalism, partnership, and cllective actin. Adult Learning Thery: Frmat f delivery and/r cntent recgnizes adult learners are mre self-directed as a result f their maturity, have a repertire f experience that can be applied t new learning, are internally mtivated t learn subject matter that can be applied immediately, and are interested in learning related t scial rles. State/Lcal Relevance: Cntent reflects issues that are imprtant t state and lcal affiliates and/r is designed t help strengthen affiliate capacity. Missin-and Data-infrmed Decisins: Cntent is missin-fcused and supprts the imprtance f being aligned with missin and/r cntent reinfrces the imprtance f utilizing data t infrm decisins. 10 Standards fr Cntent and Adult Learning Thery Adults are ften interested in learning when they have a prblem that needs t be addressed. Learning shuld help them bridge the gap between what they d nt knw and what they need t knw. Studies have shwn that adults will remember much mre f what they have learned if they are able t put it t use immediately.
