2 We open the new scholastic year here at Museo Galileo with an invitation for you to book and experience one of our various thematic visits or educational workshops. The interactive educational activities are designed for either private or scholastic groups of any age. OPENING HOURS OF MUSEO GALILEO Every day (including Sundays) 9.30 until Tuesdays 9.30 until INFORMATION AND RESERVATIONS Monday through Friday Tel Fax

3 Simple Group Entrance (Non-guided Visit) Reservations are required for all scholastic and group visits of 15 persons or more. There is no booking fee and the reservation is considered valid only after receiving a confirmation. Groups larger than 30 people will need to be divided into two separate groups due to safety and space limitations. Group Discount Entrance Fees Groups of 15 people age 15 and under pay 4,50 per person while those 16 years and over pay 5,50 each. A maximum of 2 educators per group enter for free. Guided Visits and Workshops These activities are available to groups (min 15 and max 30) upon availability. Reservations are required in advance. Duration: From 60 to 90 minutes. Costs for Thematic Visits and Workshops There is an additional charge of 2,00 per person for each educational activity. Up to two activities can be booked on the same day for the group (for example a guided visit and a workshop). Private Visits Any of the thematic visits or workshops can be booked in advanced for smaller, private groups. Costs: 50 flat rate for the activity plus applicable Museum entrance fees.

4 General Guided Visit This 60-minute guided visit through the two main floors of the Museum will highlight the most important instruments of the collections while discussing their historical-scientific significance as well as their function that the guide will demonstrate to the group along the way using a few replicas. Start time is per request and availability. Duration: 60 minutes Recommended for all ages and groups.

6 Experiential Visit - Thematic Visit This is our most popular visit and is meant to stimulate one s interest in the history of science. The Museum s guides accompanies the group through the two floors of the permanent collection explaining the historical context and functions of the instruments. Several demonstrations are performed along the way while others are performed at the conclusion of the visit in a behind-the-scenes area. Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays: 9.30, 11.00, 13.00, Tuesdays and Saturdays: 9.30, Fridays: 9.30, 11.00, 13.30, Duration: 90 minutes This visit is a great experience for people of any age or background.

8 Life and Works of Galileo - Thematic Visit Our Galileo expert will accompany the group through the Medicean collection on the 1st floor where the original instruments of Galileo Galilei can be admired. These include his two surviving telescopes which he built in 1609 and This thematic visit highlights the times, life, works and discoveries of Galileo which influenced the religious, philosophical and scientific worlds. 10 Materials of Science Thematic Visit This specialized visit begins in the Museum s Restoration Workshop where the guide will explain the selection process of particular materials used to create the original instruments. Some of the antique instrument-making techniques will be discussed before the guide continues the visit on the upper floors. 12 Learning English through Science - Thematic Visit This thematic visit of the Museum s first floor is designed to unite the worlds of the English language and science in an entertaining way. The mother-english tongue, bilingual guide uses word games and replicas of the instruments to enrich the group s vocabulary and to teach the slight nuances of Italian and English using comparatives, analogies and root words. Mondays and Wednesdays : 11.30, Tuesdays and Saturdays: 9.30, Thursdays: 9.30, 11.30, Duration: 90 minutes This visit can be adapted for all ages and competency levels of the English language.

14 History of Medicine Thematic Visit The main goal of this activity is to introduce you to the explorer Amerigo Vespucci, his fleet, crew and his oceanic voyages in search of the prized spices and treasures including new species of plants and animals from the Americas. We will also take a closer look at how he used several nautical instruments to find his way like the astrolabe, quadrant and compass. 16 Scientific Methodology of the Accademia del Cimento - Workshop This workshop presents and reproduces some of the main experiments originally performed by the Accademia del Cimento - the court scientists of the Medici Dynasty. The main topics include the validity and reliability of instruments developed for the fields of meteorology, pneumatics and astronomy. Thursdays: 9.30, Duration: 90 minutes Recommended for high school and university students. To explore virtually:

18 Galileo and Mechanics - Workshop This activity is led by Galileo himself dressed in his professor robes. He discusses mechanics while using an incline plane and pendulum. The workshop concentrates on Galileo s observational techniques and scientific methods as related to studying bodies in motion. The workshop concludes with a brief guided visit of the Museum s first floor where he will show you some of his original instruments. 20 Art and Science - Workshop The study of linear perspective, artistic techniques and practices are presented in this workshop using projections of Leonardo da Vinci s sketches and diary notes. The workshop concludes with a brief guided visit of the Museum s first floor to see Galileo s instruments. Mondays: 11.30, Tuesdays: 9.30, Duration: 90 minutes Best suited for art students.

Interactive Area Be sure to leave a good 15 minutes at the end of your educational visit to explore the Museum s two interactive rooms. Here visitors can use touchscreens and didactic models to learn more about escape mechanisms for measuring time, the differences between the heliocentric and geocentric theories, geometric trajectories of cannons and the incline plane in a very hands-on approach.

23 Science in Play This on-line game in both English and Italian was created in collaboration with Portale Ragazzi. The scholastic groups that play the game and then come to visit Museo Galileo as a class will receive a free class gift.
