MY NOTE TAKING NERD Giving You The Edge What My Note Taking Nerd Learned From Jimmy D Brown s Productivity Seminar! 1
3 Activities to Minimize Procrastination - To go around it, force yourself to learn stuff quickly - Can cave or conquer under pressure. "Turning point" for me - ongoing series of deadlines that forced me to cram as much into a time slot as possible. (The hard way of doing things with a lot of pressure and stress.) Take Time Off - Live in a state of "semi-retirement". - Whatever you want to do when you retire, DO IT NOW! - Time away is good for productivity...it's also good for life! The 6 Fundamental Daily Activities 1. Plan everything thoroughly (the big key) - Plan action steps to get where you want to go. 2. Constantly re-evaluate what's important -Continually ask yourself: "Do I really need this now?" 3. Get others involved when possible. - Key to this business is "managing", not "marketing", overseeing all business aspects. - Involve other people daily to get time-consuming stuff done. - Create a network of people around you to help in the day-to-day operations. 4. Run the business etc... - Have daily structure -> 45 min new project / 45 min customer / 45 min updates / 5. Spend time creating. 6. Focus on the "big three". - Only 3 things make for success in this business: web site traffic, subscribers, and offers. 2
How to Plan Everything Thoroughly Yearly - on a quarterly basis, outline projects want to accomplish - grade projects based on: potential profit, ease in setup, continuity with existing assets (to set priority) Monthly - look at current project / determine activities needed to be done to get it done in a reasonable amount of time - Each month work (almost) exclusively on current project.. Weekly - tasks identified in monthly divided into 4 weeks Daily - 45 min blocks of time Heirarchy: - Yearly outline of projects. - Quarterly assignment of projects. - Monthly focus on current project. - Weekly breakdown of activities. - Daily time devoted to activities. Motivations for Being Productive - main motivation is...other interests - Have volume of work that needs to be completed. Doesn't matter when it gets done, but the sooner the more time I have for other things. - When I get things done on my schedule, I'm done. ->Quitting time motivates me. - Another motivation: life is short. Outsourcing Effectively - Outsource tedious tasks in order to do creative work - Biggest KEY: EXPERIENCE and KNOWLEDGE of person who you outsource to. 3
Dealing with Doubting Moments (Thinking project is waste of time.) - Take some time off - Get a second opinion - Remember failure gets you closer to success. I don't know of any successful person who hasn't failed. Many times. - Revisit past successes - Believe in yourself if not your project. Using the 80/20 Rule - Put most important activities at beginning of the day. - Interact with those people who have the biggest impact on your business most (ex: affiliate manager) Dealing with Perfection - Pursue EXCELLENCE not PERFECTION - Perfect isn't attainable (nothing's ever gonna be perfect) - All my products are FIRST WRITES - Not gonna hit 100% of shots in practice so just step onto the court (Michael Jordan example) The ONE Productivity Strategy - Find a system that works for you and repeat it over and over and over again. - My game plan hasn't changed since August 2000: -create product -create marketing materials - promote to my list -get affiliates involved - - Six Productivity Tools: Roboform Quicktext(Mozilla Thunderbird plugin that heps send "canned messages".) Voice Recognition Software (Dragon Naturally Speaking) Template Driven Tools(Ezine Article Creator, Sales Letter Generator, Landing Page Maker, etc) "Auto" programs(submitting articles) Outsourcing services(scriptlance.com, elance.com, etc) 4
How to Spend Less Time At Your Computer Have a purpose in mind. - Don't sit down without objective, goal, etc... Defer distractions to a designated time. - Defer anything that isn't working toward your purpose How to Identify Your Priorities This order: I do the creative work I enjoy. I meet my commitments. I get others to do work I do not enjoy. The One Area Jimmy Struggles With **Anything I don't want to do** - Outsource ->there is a "backdoor" to productivity and that is to ELIMINATE those things that are UNproductive. How to work productively From a Home Office Pick your space - Quiet / PRIVATE / cut off Define your rules - "no interruptions" Take a retreat - rent a room, work 2-12PM (Odd Hours) 5
